The Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major, Op. 55 (also known as The Heroic), was written by Alexander Glazunov from April to October 1895. Although in this symphony Glazunov returned to his conventional four-movement layout (his Fourth Symphony had only three) he frequently utilizes thematic transformation. Glazunov described it as "silenced sounds" and "an architectural poem".
Glazunov dedicated his Fifth to Sergei Taneyev, a Russian composer, pianist, and teacher, and it was first performed at the Second Russian Concert at the Hall of the Nobility in St. Petersburg on 17 November 1896; the premiere was conducted by the composer himself. A Leipzig newspaper called the symphony "very profound" and "sparkling" and reported that the scherzo had to be reprised on opening night to the delight of the audience. - Hudba
Very Russian sounding symphony. Great melodies, colorful lyricism and a bombastic orchestration!
How AMAZING Glazunov was at orchestration, especially evident in that juicy opening!!! 5:24!!!
Why don't I know more about this composer, this is awesome!

One of Glazunov's most magnificent symphonies, and one that I have been fortunate to hear twice in concert- a splendid work! thank you for posting this wonderful performance. Svetlanov was one of the great conductors.
Somewhat unpredictable at times but overall Svetlanov was IMO one of the finest conductors of the 20th century. His recording (Y.T.) of Tchaikovsky's first symphony is one of the greatest recordings of all time of any symphony, absolutely incredible.
@@TheVaughan5 I agree, and I find his intensity completely captivating! I remember when the first Melodya records were reaching the West, some complaints about his permitting/encouraging "vulgar" brass in the orchestra- I loved it! Svetlanov is indeed one of the greats. thanks.

21:38 ... 22:37: what a gem !
This is great! I love the finale.
20:59 - 21:07 mind-blowing modulation!
24:35 - 24:50
The Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra has what I think is the best recording of this work. They seem to ignore the piano dynamics in some areas but it makes the symphony come alive particularly the 1st and 2nd movements.
The Fedoseyev recording? I couldn't agree more. It's spectacular. The finale is blistering.

Cymbal player got lost on the last page, but recovered ok. Good decision to let it go- can't imagine a re-take could have been better than that finale.
You're right lol! At least he was in rhythm. I'd get carried away too.

🤣🤣🤣
The main theme sounds like the 'sword' leitmotif from the Ring Cycle. Not quite the same notes, but close enough
3rd movement also pretty purposefully alludes to the fate theme of Tchaik 4 at the beginning.
Correction: the leitmotif sounds like the main theme.
@@juliusseizure591 the ring came long before this symphony

sounds like Tchaikovsky borrowed bars 5-7 for his Romeo and Juliet overture. 0:20
He did a mix between Tchaikovsky and Borodin. A great work.
Tchaikovsky was dead at the time when Glazunov composed this symphony. We could say that Tchaikovsky lent his bars to Glazunov.
Great composer Glazunov, here you have Rêverie Op 24, the piano part to play over.
Enjoy it! czcams.com/video/AB3ZMr_Xglg/video.html
А можно комментарии на русском?
That's wrong
many influences of previous russian composers, his music is very interesting although more old-fashioned and thus less unique and imaginative
Glazunov seems to have trouble ending his allegros effectively. They sound kind of forced and hokey.
I'll give him a call. thanks.
Yeah, great stuff... right until the end. He's like-- V-I-V-I and Done!
@@AndreyRubtsovRU Any time.
idk, I think it's satisfying enough. Not the most mind-blowing endings ever, but they do what they have to do.
@@bdragon1445 That IV in the penultimate measure is surprisingly triumphant yet fits is so satisfyingly.
