In today's "hot take" I discuss how much art style is incredibly overrated, and why you shouldn't really be focusing on it.

I just found my art style after trying so many things and working on different styles I found I like the simple art style.

(This is jus my opinion feel free 2 disagree) I personally feel like if u focus too much on finding ur artstyle ur stopping urself from improving. Like let's say ur a beginner artist and started drawing a few months ago. Ur not the best at drawing but ur learning and ur art is decent. If u focus 2 much on ur current artstyle you'll stop urself from improving. Ur gon draw the same slightly large head, disproportionate facial features and you'll jus think dats ur artstyle. So allow urself 2 improve and don't worry 2 much and happy drawing!

I love these discussions. And I want to say to those like me who have been drawing for years who have improved significantly but are still struggling with finding what we love to draw, art is very much like a building a house. You'll never finish building your skills as an artist and as you grow your art will naturally begin to change. However, that's ok! That shows you are learning and growing and I love seeing artist displaying the journey because I myself am on one and it brings me encouragement and comfort knowing there are others at me still learning and figuring out what it is they love to draw. Don't worry about how your feed on your Instagram may look...right now focus on learning as well as experimenting. Also along with learning the basics of art also do style studies of your favorite artist with either your own OC, fanart of a favorite Character, or even a body part. (So draw a hand using your basic understanding of anatomy and the experiment drawing it in different ways). We all are influenced by one another so try out others people's styles and see what you like about it and what you don't and see how you may be able to incorporate it into your own art pieces. Oh and one more piece of advice try and see what kind of art you like to draw because you may not be able to use certain "rules" used in one style for another style. For instance, it's hard for me to combine cartoon styles and anime styles together. Not saying it's impossible. It could be a manner of just picking and choosing which elements to include where. Anyway I loved the video and definitely agree not to focus so heavily on art style. Whenever I do that I begin to not enjoy drawings and become stressed out. Just focus on learning and having fun. It'll come to you just trust the process

I’ve been focusing on skills. I started doing art in October 2021. I have dabbled I. The past but now I’m serious and loving it. My art style is developing nicely through my feelings, like if the way I’ve done the nose or the eyes feels right etc.
There are many ways of doing everything. It just develops over time, but only from trying different things.
    Exploring is key!!!

I completely agree with you on this! I think the pressure put on new artists on social media to get a specific and unique art style has stunted the basics of learning how to draw. Since what they see on social media are artists with their styles being consistent = gaining more followers and likes. It can take a while or years for your art style to find you, it just depends on each person and their learning pace ^-^

This is such a refreshing take. In writing, I had taken a whole class on "finding your voice," and like art, it's something that newer writers in particular fret over a lot. But the truth is that your voice, your style, develops with you as you learn and get better. You develop your personal tastes over time, and that will eventually develop into your style. I've gotten back into art after several years of letting my skills languish, and I'm having to remind myself of this same thing!

Randomly when i was in the 2nd grade, my artstyle found me. I was just drawing on the table then i just drew something that didn't look like the rest of the art i made at the time. I really liked it so i started drawing like that now im in highschool and still draw like that, the little doodle turned out to be the key to find my artstyle.

I think the main issue that comes from people wanting to develop a style is the fact that they are trying to force the process. Style is a part of the art-making process. It comes alongside, as @Cardi A mentioned, improving on your technical skills. As mentioned in the video, it takes time. You don't get up one day and have a style, but it also isn't a crafted thing, as said probably a billion times over. Best tip is to ignore style. It is hard, but just ignore it. Draw how you want things to look. Try new things. Try new methods. Try new mediums. I know I'm probably sounding like an echo, but there is nothing else truly to say. Art is a journey, you kinda have to figure it out, I guess...
Amazing video, by the way! ❤

Art style isn't very important in my opinion. My style is clearly inspired by anime but also very obviously not. I depend on my understanding of objects instead of directly referencing to learn. That's what makes my style. Anime-style is the kind I look at the most but if I just reference the stylised art, it wouldn't help develop my own outside of it. I personally call my art style a bad copy of anime, not because it looks bad but because it's not a good _copy_ . Art style comes with time, you get more comfortable drawing things a certain way based on the kind of art you like.
