Gravel grid driveway installation

  • In this video we show how a gravel grid system can be used to create a gravel driveway which can take the load of a vehicle without the gravel moving which saves raking of gravel where on a normal gravel driveway you would create tracks. There is no movement of the gravel when moving over it or even when turning. We used the 'ECODEC 500' square grids in this video and filled them with 10mm golden flint gravel. We would definitely recommend this method when having a gravel installed.

    • @SamDaviesBuilder

      I personally think you should be able to see the grid as then you have no stones moving about as they are completely contained. But I can’t see anything wrong with covering the grids, it just might mean a bit of raking from time to time

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  Před rokem

      If it was laid on stone dust then yes but if the mono block was laid on sand I’d say no. You’d have to take the sand up and replace it with stone. The sand would be too affected by water

  • @leewagner942
    @leewagner942 Před 5 měsíci

    How does this compare cost wise to block paving, as the sub-base is pretty much identical, does the grid and the shingle cost as much as blocks ? Was this something you priced and compared.

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I would say its definitely cheaper than block paving as there is much less labour (grids go down far quicker than paving blocks) and also no need to think about drainage as you would with block paving (as long as you're not on really wet ground). I didn't compare this job to block paving as it would have been too difficult to get falls etc with the paving to get the water away in this scenario.

    Hi nice job. Can you confirm how deep you dug out.

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  Před rokem +1

      Hi, thanks. It was a new build so was already dug. If this was a new job I’d want to put in 100-150mm of sub base (mot type 1), then use something finer just to get it nice and flat so 25-50mm of 20mm to dust. So including the grid thickness you’d be somewhere between 170mm to 240mm to dig out. This all depends on your ground too, if you already had hardcore down you wouldn’t need so much thickness of new hardcore to go in

    how is it now?
    how do you keep weeds from growing?

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  Před 10 měsíci

      Still good and it is pretty good for lack of weeds. You have to use weedkiller or pick out the weeds the same as any other gravel driveway though. A lot of it is driven on so that keeps the weeds down a lot but anywhere they spring up I just give them a spray every few months.

  • @Mark-vg9vu
    @Mark-vg9vu Před rokem

    Good job. Question, for the sub base and car traffic is your recomendation at the start for the sub base enough to cover the weight of a car e.g will it sink over time? Would a concrete base (although maybe more expensive) be better? Thanks 👍

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  Před rokem +1

      There would be no need to put a concrete base in. It all depends on your ground conditions too so in some instances you may need more sub base. As long as the sub base is compacted in layers and if it’s a new driveway then even put a vibrating roller over the new sub base and it won’t go anywhere.
      Ensure you have a membrane under the sub base to stop any soil mixing with the stone over time too

    Are these good for keeping water out? We have had a new build and I wanted channels but our landscaper wants to gravel grid the sides of the house? A lot of water floods and he stated that this will stop the water sitting etc., I love channels but he states this is more effective

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  Před rokem

      These don’t keep water out. They will let water through them (permeable) providing the ground beneath is free draining. I’d say you’d have to put some sort of drain in if it floods, if you used these you could put a land drain pipe below?

  • @wandawizard5605
    @wandawizard5605 Před 2 lety +1

    Would this be a better solution for drainage problems caused by surface water laying on top of gravel?

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  Před 2 lety +1

      I don’t think it would help with drainage. Only way to stop water sitting on the gravel is to use a permeable base underneath or slope it all so the water can run off

  • @charlottevanholthe1

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  Před rokem

      I’d say you can just put these straight on the concrete. And if you’re straight on concrete, I wouldn’t worry about a membrane.

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  Před rokem

      What sort of slope are you talking? It would contain stone on a slope as long as it’s not really steep

    • @dj9048
      @dj9048 Před rokem

      Difficult to say.... A moderate slope maybe! If the car handbrake was released it would fall back on its own. Really like the idea of a porous drive - could you recommend anything different?

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  Před rokem

      @@dj9048 you’d ideally need to find another gravel grid driveway of a similar slope to see if it works but I’d say you could go pretty steep!
      Another option for a permeable driveway is block paving as you can get a permeable version of that and it works well when it’s done right

    • @SamDaviesBuilder
      @SamDaviesBuilder  Před rokem +1

      I’m not sure if this is a joke post but if you did what you said you certainly couldn’t drive over it. You could get away with what you’re saying if it was somewhere you’d only walk on but it would still be terrible. Plus anywhere that sinks you can’t keep topping up with gravel or over time you’d have some stupidly deep gravel!

    • @levrone0075
      @levrone0075 Před rokem +1

      @@SamDaviesBuilder I did this on my drive where I park 3 cars and yes after about 6mts it needed a top up where the wheels typically go but after that it's been OK and hardly sunk. Yes dude, mine came with suggestions 8-12mm gravel. And textile was on it hot pressed. No chance to rise up. As well mine was done like that: wall of the grid in bottom wider then on top twice, gravel holds it from rising.
