- Driving part-time for legendary names such as Jack Roush and Dick Landy, Herb takes what racing taught him and pivots into opening a family business. Words cannot Express how great this video series has been. Takes me back to the 70s and those wonderful memories of drag racing, the street driven cars also. It all went too fast. That 62 Lebaron is gorgeous. Rare find these days . Great video series of amazing Americans .
I'm almost 63 now, which means I was a teenager in the 70s. No decade like it before or since. I got my first car in 73 when I was still 15. Got my drivers license in 74. Which means that for half a year, all I could do was tinker with that 327 64 Impala SS in the yard. That's when I fell in love with mechanics. 47 years later and I still do. Only wish I had gotten into drag racing as a profession instead of just on the street.
@@chevyblue10 Ditto- that's all I got.
Here it is. Most people, the longer they talk the less we may like them; with this man it is the opposite.
@@neilbarker5003 absolutely, I caught myself smiling so many times throughout the video and teared up when he was talking about his Mrs. There's not many videos on CZcams that aren't a waste of time to watch. I really hated to see the credits roll on this one.
@@chevyblue10 !-
Great story, great life, great wife, nicely told. Can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this. What a blessed man.
I agree Richard!
I actually bought parts from Herb about 30 years ago...VERY HELPFUL... had no idea who he was really...years later it turns out a legend was helping me out all those years ago...
If you did where was his place at?
This should be on history when they do their car weeks instead of garbage like kit vs the A-team van !! This is truly inspiring and people should use this man and his wife as an example to live up to and look up to !!
I agree,,,this type of content should be on TV not just car building shows.
@@jayberry2716 most of those builders build pure junk. What’s cool is the guys that could take a little 283 Chevy junk yard motor, rebuild it using old or used parts and run with most anything on the road, now that’s damn impressive.
Herb is an excellent story teller! One of the best interviews I have ever watched!
Ya to hear him tell it.
Best job I ever had was working for Herb and Marie. I ran their machine shop and cylinder head shop from 1993 until they closed. Herb always treated his customers and employees like they were the best friends he had.
What a wonderful man and a great story. Best wishes from Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks Mr. McCandless for sharing. I think about all the soldiers in 'nam reading about your wins while stationed in the jungle, keeping them sane. Great to see Mr. Buddy Martin contribute to this. The right combination of personality and attitude make for a winner.
People like Herb r drag racing.... Great story well put together Mopar and the hemi was the baddest around still dominate today
It is an honor to say I met and talked with herb here and there when I worked at Napa. Great man. God bless
This was a great story . And I'm grateful to hear it . There's so many things that I thought I knew and didn't .. In the 70s we had a pro stock Camaro . We raced him at capital Raceway . Needless to say he was in another league . But now I know why ...
Just missed out on having my engine built by Herb's shop 20 plus years ago. Have seen and met Herb several times at local events here in NC and he even came up to my Plymouth and made very enthusiastic comments about it which I appreciate very much to this day!
Wow,, what a wonderful story of a husband and Wife living life large and enjoying every minute. We're sure there were a few upsets BUT they were a team and pushed on through it. We feel so sorry for losing his best friend Marie. GOD Bless and Thank YOU for sharing this amazing story.
What an amazing journey this man has had
Such an amazing story! Loved every second of it. What a great story teller Herb is. Wishing him and his family all the best! Thanks
Much love to the MCcandless family
I met Herb buying parts from him in the early 90s
He helped me embarress many fords and Chevy's
Never forgotten how he run his business great person
Greetings from NH Herb! Had the pleasure of dealing with Herb during my tenure at NAPA Auto Parts in Burlington, NC. Stay safe.
My lord this is awesome !……with all the crap out there that’s suppose to be entertaining now days this is just a blessing .
Bennie, why do you have to drag a invisible, delusional, religious god into this? (just my opinion)
This was wonderful, tastefully done. What a guy!
Herb McCandless is a wonderful Man, I just hope I'm 1/2 the man he is.
I agree with every word of the below comment from 70s Tunes.

Hello Steve, how are you doing. I hope you are safe and in good health. Looking for a new friend and i saw your pic here. I hope you don't mind thank you.
Fascinating story. Well told, well lived.
Back in the 90s I called Hughes Performance about a set of big block heads. I told him about my 71 low compression 440 with the old 509 can and he tried to sell me a new motor. I called McCandless and he listened to what I had and sent me a excellent set of 452 heads. I think I talked to Herb himself.
I should say Hughes Engines in Illinois.
An amazing story of an amazing career always bummed me out I was born 10 years too late to participate with competitors like this.
God bless Marie
I stumbled across this video looking up Dodge Demon drag cars, bounced around a few other videos, landed on this video, and loved every minute of it. What a great guy. And a wonderful family.
Herb u the man!
13:50 "I quit, this is not fun anymore." I too, quit drag racing when the fun stopped. I had been asked to join a Pro Stock team, but walked away instead.
Thank you Herb, for sharing your story. You're an amazing man, living a fabulous life. Well done.
This guy could win with 2 plug wires pulled. Sheeez
This is one of the best things I have ever watched on CZcams. Now do a film about those 3 hot blond trophy girls... That's how I remember the girls of the 70's, what a great time to be a young man.
Thanks Herb...you don't know me, but back in the '70s I actually knew of you, and loved to watch you race on TV.....In my opinion, you were the best of them....I really appreciate getting to know more about you and your career thru these videos ....I'm almost 74 now, so I was there too.....OnWard....
That's incredibly well done and complete. Herb McCandless is Mopar royalty. The white '62 Chrysler is stunning!
Great story. I never knew about Strange Engineering's relationship with Herb. They're good people too.
What a Great documentary , Thanks to every one involved .
A true American hero and icon. A genuine stand up guy!!
What a beautiful life Herb and his family has had. I can’t think of a more humble and real individual. Thanks for all the positive memories you have provided your fans. Mr. 4 Speed !
One of one off the great gear jammer thanks for sharing this story a true piece of Drag racing history... Hammer that load pedal.....
I was kid who loved drag racing in the 60s (born in '58) Our family moved overseas in '68 so I could only follow drag racing in magazines and comics. Never realized at the time that this was the golden age of drag racing. This America is gone and gentlemen like Herb are becoming more rare today. I watch a lot of nostalgia on CZcams to recall the good old days. I really appreciate the quality of this documentary series and wish Herb and his family all the best.
Herb Jr footage at Farmington dragway is so cool. I've run there several times myself
Really great video wish those days were here again
I just love the down to earth editing. You have done a wonderful job bringing this great man to life in camera.
I will never forget that exact same time he went through the tunnel in the February of 1999 trip to Mexico, I was recovering from a Wreck from a fox body Mustang 2 months earlier. Bed ridden and recovering from the plastic aeorta and face reconstruction. I was crushed from the waist up, broken all three of the bones in my right leg. God bless you Mr. 4 speed.
I raced a Super Stock 340 Duster back in the 70's! Those were great times in my life!😀😀😀 Glad to see you've had a great life too!❤
what a class act...
Great Story. Great Man.

My Dad was a Chrysler master mechanic from just after WW2 to 1964, and you sure remind me of him, he's 95 now, we were Mopar all the way, my 1st car was a 37 DeSoto, with a Chrysler spitfire engine, I sure enjoyed all the shows about you, so talented thank you for sharing, !!!!
I’m glad I watched that‼️👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Beautiful story!! I really enjoyed this series!! Very well done!!
Hello Bob, how are you doing. I hope you are safe and in good health. Looking for a new friend and i saw your pic here. I hope you don't mind thank you.
Herb is one of a kind. We need more Herb's in the world.
This one as well going on my Facebook page thank you for the video.
A remarkable man. I was fortunate to have seen him race when I lived in Memphis. One of his cars was sponsored by Thomas Chrysler across the river in West Memphis Arkansas. I bought my 70 AAR cuda from them new in 70. Another sponsor he had was Hutton Dodge. I worked in their body shop in the day. I met Dick Landy there when he was in town to hold a Dodge performance clinic one night at the dealership. We all respected Herb. He was a great showman and always fast. I remember when he moved to Carolina and worked with Direct Connection. Great presentation. It certainly brings back great memories.
Man what a story. Thank you so much for making this!
What a life Herb had sounds like one I would love to have racing Mopars and getting paid to do it with direct connection to Chrysler and the parts man that would of been awesome. What a great documentary
Wow these are some great stories, thank you Herb for sharing this with us. Very well done documentary.
"WOW"
My sincere Thank you, for educating an old man.
Wonderful story, and a life we'll remembered.
Legend !!!!
I loved it, my Mopar heroe
Best documentary I have ever seen. It provided a lot of history for me to help understand how my 1964 Sport Fury, 426 wedge, Dana 60, A833 4-speed car came to be.
Ah Direct Connection. I was a young dealership mechanic with a 72 Challenger back then and MANY Direct Connection parts found their way on my street car!!!!! Herb is such a class act!
Hard to beat the class the originals have.
What a great story I loved it ...a real feel good story ...
As far as I can tell, and I’m a huge drag racing fan of 50 years, the racing and performance community as it relates to MOPAR would not be what it turned into with the genus of this man!!! Someone please download all the information stuck in his brain onto a computer for all gear heads to have access to. Men like him are national treasures.
Herb your the reason i love Mopars is because of the people who drive and know what they are. Thank you for doing this interview. I enjoyed all 3 sessions in one sitting and its 2 hours past my bed time. Thanks again
Herb, as a Mopar enthusiast thank you for your stories and the memories.
You made me cry too, thanks!
Really interesting ,even to an Aussie with not much appreciation for Mopar stuff.

Such a nice video! Much respect to you herb!
Another great video. I was a young kid back when the pro stock wars were red hot and Herb McCandless was one of the best known drivers in the class. Some guys just have the Midas touch and Herb McCandless is one of them.
Awesome story. I retired from Chrysler Engineering in 2007 and knew Dick Maxwell, Al Adam and Al Nichols. Very smart engineers and also a cast of characters. It was a fun place to work!
Absolutely loved watching these videos today, very informative and very interesting
Part 3,, ready to watch and learn.
What a well done presentation of a great man.
Great interview!
Very cool video Herb i truly enjoyed it very much.

I am happy to say that I am old enough to remember the days since 1968 or so. Those drivers and mechanics and race cars were my heroes since jr high. Thanks for the memories. Great times!
