Corn Pollination (Techniques & Failed Grow)

  • Lots going on here with the hydroponic corn grow. First, corn tassels were premature and didn't provide full pollination when silks emerged. This often occurs when plants are stressed or other environmental issues. Second, to combat that, I did some research on how to save pollen and apply later. Fail. Third, I show how to cut silks to improve pollination by hand pollinating the corn. This would be very effective if pollen was used right away (according to the experts). Overall, this was a failure, but I've learned some things and I will give container corn another shot.
    I am determined.

You did your corn proud by all the measures you took to ensure a good harvest. A lot of factors out of your control. I learned a lot watching your video 👍

No, not hard at all to grow. Same as most veggies...fertile soil or a complete fertilizer. Corn benefits from extra nitrogen.

Well, that's a bummer. One thing about it.....you gave it one hell of a try. I'm a complete novice when it comes to corn, but I thought I might give it a shot next year. I found this information to be very useful.....thanks.

I’m having to hand pollinate my corn because there’s absolutely no wind where i am and it’s very hot and humid and I have about 40 plants with 80 silks formin. I’m going out there every day with a piece of paper to catch the pollen after shaking the tassels and pouring the pollen over the silks. Doing this every day to ensure a good first corn harvest

      Hi Brent,
Makes me wonder if you should change the variety? Maybe next time try true hand pollination (for at least one ear)... take a pinch of pollen and just smear it all over the silks. Cheers,
      Bill

Hey Bill. The corn didn't silk. Well, like 4 were present after over a week of pollen dropping. Time was running out which is why I tried to save pollen. Don't get me wrong, I also wanted to try saving pollen to see how long it would keep. Very wise on trying a new variety! Got that video coming with the next no-weed garden coming shortly!
