    I recognize the Rebel is not built for fuel economy, and quite frankly I love the Rebel either way, but the EPA seriously needs to reevaluate the numbers for this truck. There is no way a Hemi V-8, even with E-torque will ever get 22 MPG when the truck is lifted from the factory, and has those off-road tires. Not unless it's all downhill with a tailwind. Thanks TFLTruck for the test, and I hope the EPA gets their s**t together

    • @zackshick11
      @zackshick11 Před 5 lety +11

      I neglected to mention the 3.92 gear ratio of the Rebel. That will seriously impact fuel economy, especially at those speeds. Many highway systems have limits between 50 and 65, especially around where I am from (PA). I think a test around those speeds would be very nice to see and compare to this test.

    I sat in the RAM REBEL 12 for the first time and pictures almost don't do it justice. That MPG isn't the greatest, but most off road specialty trucks suffer compared to what they are rated. I think that EPA rating is for all 1500s with the 5.7 V8 with eTorque and they didn't do the Rebel seperately. The Ram is still an AWESOME truck and a Dream truck as far as 1500 size trucks go. I wish that I could afford the 55-59k price tag. Heck I wish that I could afford my mid size Dream truck in the Chevy Colorado ZR2. Like someone already said, I wonder if Car and Driver tested their 2.7 Turbo 4 at sea level vs you guys up there in the Denver mountain air? Thanks for sharing this video guys, I always like some real world testing. 2.7 Silverado on the IKE I can feel it is soon, as long as the weather cooperates.

    Andre, your testing is accurate. I have the same identical 2019 Ram Rebel with e-torque as your test model. I currently have 6,000 miles on it. Mine also has the air suspension that is supposed to help with mpg on the highway with the aero mode. The best I have ever gotten is 18 mpg in pure, easy highway driving. Most of the time I average 17 - 17.5 mpg. My 2007 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi got better mpg than this one has. The e-torque is a joke, I wish I had waited and ordered one with the standard Hemi. Unfortunately, at the time, all the dealers were ordering e-torque and that’s all that was available.

      @Rick James5678 any use of throttle on a v8 tanks mpg. Because going over peak torque causes a deficit in efficiency leading to more fuel consumption. The 2.7l also has a much harder torque curve much flatter so when you need to hit your torque its sooner allowing better accel without needing to rev like a 5.3 does which normally needs to hit 3000 rpm to hit peak torque. The 5.3 is less efficient because its na and needs to rev higher to hit the most efficient rpm area. The 2.7l is more efficient because it's high efficiency range starts way lower and goes higher.

I believe the additional drag causes the engine to have to start using boost or shorter CVT ratio and FE drops from 33-34 to 29-30. Comparing runs would be interesting experience at those speeds.

      I personally wouldn't buy this setup Silverado, but I can absolutely see a market for it. Unlike the majority of the other pickups that claim to be after fuel efficiency, this one's actually living up to it. I think that's because in reality the engineers designed it to be adequate as a truck, but excel at getting good gas mileage. It seems like Ford and Dodge both tried to get both variables or at least a compromise out of there more fuel efficient spec trucks. And as to be expected, it just doesn't work out the same way.
      I was just reading an article yesterday that said in 2018, 75% of the F150 trucks that Ford sold were V6 turbocharged versions. I'm sure a lot of them were probably the 3.5 EcoBoost, but there's no way all of them were. I'm sure a lot of them were the smaller units like the 2.7 v6 that have more of an emphasis on fuel economy.
      Chevrolet on the other hand by a massive amount has the 5.3 as the most popular engine in their half tons. It obviously has not been as fuel efficient as even their smaller V6 is, but they tend to offer the 5.3 in packages that come with other amenities for only a grand or sometimes it's even included as a promotion. At any rate, it massively outnumbers the V6 and the 6.2 option which I believe General Motors makes harder to get intentionally to boost the Cafe standards in the half ton Silverado.
      Yet despite this, you can go to a majority of websites where people keep track of the average fuel economy they're getting on both the half ton Silverado and the F-150, and even though Ford at least in 2018 seem to average about a third of a mile to the gallon better than the 1/2 ton Silverados, it says a lot for General Motors. They haven't had a pick up like this before. Now even if they sell even a small percentage of these, it's going to change that average significantly. If the majority or at least half of the F-150s on the road had at least some intention of being highly fuel-efficient based on the whole claim to the EcoBoost, and all they can do is barely eke out a slight advantage over the extreme commonplace and overly reliable 5.3 v8 that's offered in the Silverado, I would say Ford's going to have to really commit to building a truck that is in fact fuel efficient as a first priority, and not a second or third.
      It's looking to me like this Silverado with the 2.7 is going to be the real deal if you want to save gas and don't want a diesel Colorado.
      If they managed to sell a lot of these, I think that should be all the proof Ford and Dodge need to build something that's at least similar. Realistically speaking, not everybody needs 4 million foot pounds of torque. This 4-cylinder Silverado has way more power than trucks did with twice the engine several decades ago. If anything it's overkill for the amount of fuel economy it gets.

    • @sergeysmelnik
      @sergeysmelnik Před 5 lety

      Chevys 5.3 competes with the 2.7tt not the 3.5tt. The 2.7 gets much better fuel economy than the 3.5. Compared to the 5.3 the 2.7 is noticeably more fuel efficient. Not only that it reaches peak torque much earlier in the rpm than the 5.3 and its a quicker truck. You also get the 10r80 transmission with the 2.7 while the 5.3 is stuck with the old 8 speed.
      So the 2.7 is a couple mpgs better, half a second quicker in the quarter mile and has two more gears.
      The gm 2.7 competes with the f150 3.5 NA. And there in that category I would agree that its a better engine in every way.
      The engine that competes with gms 6.2 is fords 3.5tt. And there the story is the same as the 5.3 vs 2.7 except for the transmissions being the same. Better mpg and quicker.
      That leaves fords 5.0 to not have a true competitor from gm. However when you look at the car world you can compare the mustang 5.0 and camaro 6.2. Camaro just slightly lighter and same 10r80 transmissions on both shows them to be pretty equal in straight line times. However in the truck world even though the 5.0 is considered a lower tier engine compared to the 6.2 its actually faster in a straight line and pretty close to fords own 3.5tt. It also is rated a couple mpg all around. And then if you want to include rams 5.7, engine is right in between gms 5.3 and 6.2.
      So after looking at all this ford doesnt have to do anything. They beat all the trucks numbers wise. Just like ranger is the most powerful and efficient gas truck in its segment. What really needs to be done is chevy needs the 5.3 to come with the 10r80. That just seems weird and greedy, that transmission would benefit it in every single way. Put the 2.7tt into the Colorado with the 10r80. Id take that over a Ranger. And ram needs to put the 6.4 in the 1500 so they can compete with 3.5tt, 5.0, and 6.2.

      You are correct. An engine with a power adder (turbo, super charger, nitrous) will be more efficient and not lose as much HP as a naturally aspirated engine. I've always used about 2% loss per 1000' elevation for turbo'd engines and 3% loss per 1000' elevation for N/A engines.

    • @kevin9c1
      @kevin9c1 Před 5 lety +2

      @@natedog51 Eh, the most efficient state for a gas spark ignition engine is basically when the intake manifold is at or around atmospheric. That means no boost, but no pumping losses. A small turbo engine at altitude is going to rely heavily on the turbo just to move the truck along at highway speeds, which should have given an even worse result than C&D, so obviously something else is going on here.
      And not losing as much power at altitude has nothing to do with efficiency. It has to do with cramming more air pressure into the engine so you can then inject more fuel and make it all burn. Gasoline engines will generally get worse fuel economy with turbos, all things equal. Diesels, however, are the opposite.

The issue is the rebel is optimized for off road it has high gear ratios, big tires, sets higher, more complex drive train. which all accounts for lower fuel economy. It seems to be meant only to benefit the manufacturer by raising its average fuel economy numbers through fuzzy math. Based on early reviews, it’s hard to see how a consumer will get the real-world fuel economy improvement to recoup the $1,450 option cost on the V8 eTorque.

      That's because EPA doesn't really test anything (okay, 1 out of 10?), so the numbers are whatever fantasy someone gives them. The point is mentioning repeatedly mild hybrid here is disingenuous because mild hybrid doesn't do anything in flat, steady highway ride. Driving straight 5.7 under those conditions they would probably get better mileage than with the mild hybrid because of lower weight.

      The difference between the tests is you guys were doing the full on hypermile thing with the 4-banger Chevy and C&D were doing the opposite.
      It’s like any other turbo gasoline engine (I.E. Ecoboost), under light load it doesn’t make any boost and thus sips gas like a small displacement engine should.
      However, get into boost and due to richer A/F ratios needed by FI combinations to help keep detonation in check it actually get worse fuel mileage than a naturally aspirated engine that makes similar power.
      This engine will be good for low-speed and light load fuel economy (like the EcoBoost) but it will drink *more* gas than the V8 if you lean on it.
      This is why there is disparity between The TFL and C&D numbers. C&D always drive like jackasses, you guys drove like grandma.
      The Ram is just a gas hog.
