    Honestly what got me really into it is how the world feel so alive, you can listen to random npc talking, follow them as they walk away to see what happen and suddenly end up in an event. Sometimes you'll walk around the city, maybe rearranging your bags and some npc dialogue would pop up and just make you chuckle with how weird some of them are, even the enemy npcs sometimes have their own dialogue before you jump on them.

    • @WilstormGaming
      @WilstormGaming  Před 10 měsíci +31

      Yeah I love the dialogue, it got even better in the expansions. It's amazing how easy it is to get lost in the game - I'll log in to get some story done and like one mission in get sidetracked on some event chain and next minute 2 hours has passed and I haven't done any story haha

      @@WilstormGaming If you've not already done so, swing by the jail in Rata Sum and sit there a bit (If you're struggling to find it inside the cube, hop on your griffon if you have it or just use your glider if you don't an fly off the side of the middle of Rata Sum and just go down and down and down until you get a loading screen)
      Some of the dialogue in the jail is hillarious. One of the guards actually loops around and progresses through a series of lines in a convo with one of the inmates each time they come back xD

      Yeah I was thinking this last night when I popped into Divinity's Reach and one of the NPC's was talking to another about where to find this bar and she is like "If you get to the firing range you have gone too far" and he responds "You put a firing range next to a bar?" and she's like, 'Yep, only 1 fatality last month!". It was funny, but it got me thinking out the NPC's seem to have a real world going on and they are not just sitting there waiting for you to interact with them.

    Honestly I think it's quite admirable that in a game that's over 10 years old, you can still see tons of players in old maps doing events.
    THIS is imo what an mmo should be.
    Give players a reason to play together without needing for overly complicated & relatively easy to figure out.
    I love how the game allows you to play at your pace. No need to "rush" to keep up with eveyrone because your builds & gear are gnna be just as viable later as they are now. Wanna play for hours on end every day? Great you can if you find your goals to chase. Wanna casually play once every few weeks or take breaks & return when u feel like it? Amazing.

      You hit the nail on the head there. I bought a cheap set of beserker exotic gear at level 80 and so I've just been enjoying the game for what it is, playing through all the zones and stories in order - no mad rush to get the right gear or whatever

      @HyenaBlank Před 10 měsíci +4

      Plus the way they do sidequests just makes perfect sense. Instead of a constant back and forth between npc's, they're just all bundled up into different regional areas on the map via those 'Hearts' that you can do passively without having to fill up a big list of quests on the side of the screen.
      Then you got the wandering NPC's that trigger events based on players interacting with them. Helping guard one NPC down a road to an outpost can lead to a whole chain of events

      sounds like most of you just had some sort of *culture shock* honestly, you are victims of vile conditioning. what blizzard did to the MMO community is unforgivable and many other studios tried to jump on the bandwagon over the years.
      ANet, otoh already followed a very different approach when they founded their studio around the year 2000 - the three founders all came from blizzard, right? they knew the toxic and exploitative thinking prevalent in their former employer, viewing the customer/players foremost as cash-cows and not respecting their time and effort in the game. ANet worked on Guild Wars 1 for years before WoW got released and brought their game to the market in April 2005. even back then in their first game, all content was designed to be relevant all the time. they just refined their techniques over the years and we can witness it in GW2. have fun in Guild Wars for years to come

    • @HyenaBlank
      @HyenaBlank Před 10 měsíci +2

      Personally for me, I only played WoW for maybe a month or two cause a friend wanted meat shields for dungeon raids.
      But I recall some of the older MMO's had a bad problem with piles of back and forth sidequests too, so I don't think wow in particular is solely to blame, though they certainly didn't help to do anything to get rid of it either since they ended up becoming the template for every other MMO for the next two decades after it.
      GW2 did a pretty great way to clean up that redundancy with how it did sidequests. Granted, a lot of them still have that "Do so and so 10 times" mechanic, but there's no npc you have to keep running back to over and over again just to get the same quest multiple times in a row before you can get anything meaningful, You just do it passively as you explore the area.
      Occasionally there's some that want ya to gather stuff to bring back to em, but those are often related to those chains of dynamic events.

      This is a game I've played since launch myself. Yes, there are other games I've played, but I always eventually come back to this one. Even while playing my current favorite. That's the best part of Guild Wars 2, IMO. I can always come back and see what's new, and the Living World constantly adds new stuff to the game. Gonna have to set some time for the next expansion, but my current main game, PSO2, is going through a slow bit right now. Go in, do dailies, be done for the day unless I want to do something else to screw around there. Next major update is not going to happen until this winter for that game, though there is plenty to have fun with there.
      But Guild Wars 2, as I said, is a game I always come back to and will continue to do so.

      The community definitely helps this game thrive. Someone else already said it but it bears repeating - people don't have to tag up and lead events, help players, etc., but they do. Giving players the ability to lead when they feel comfortable doing so, is such a great way to make the world feel much more alive and engaging.

    The exact same happened to me about a month ago when i started GW2. It's an amazing game that doesn't treat you like a employee, i work 12 hour days and i need something that won't punish me for taking 3 or 4 months off. Once i realized that this game will just be there for me whenever i get back i purchased the complete edition. and the past month have been fantastic. oh and one more note mounts in gw2 are the FUCKING BEST mounting system i have ever seen in an MMO. They are all unique, and you will use all of them even after you get skyscale or griffon which i have already.

    I started playing in week 2 of this game's launch (2012), I have left and came back numerous times. Here is why I keep coming back
    1 No subscriptions, you pay once
    2. You can literally pick up where you left off, in other words, you don't feel like you got left behind.
    3. There is always something more to do, more to achieve, it just doesn't get old. All the zones are always populated.
    4. and my favorite, its beautiful characters in a beautiful world doing engaging content.
    I played WoW, BDo, LotRo and FfIV, and they are all good in some way, but GW2 is good in almost everything.
    Thank you Anet for being different.

      "2. You can literally pick up where you left off, in other words, you don't feel like you got left behind."
      This is not always true. Sometimes you may want to get a different stat combination or a new elite spec or a new mount etc. depending on when you stopped. That doesn't make your old stuff obsolete by any stretch but suboptimal. And it usually doesn't take too long to catch up.

    I'm 62 and probably one of the oldest female players on WOW and GW2. I played WOW for over 11 years. Like you, I have tried almost every game out there, but always keeping WOW as my main game. The others never really appealed to me like WOW. Then about 2 years ago I found myself bored again and I came across GW2, and I am totally sold. I have 100's of mounts in WOW and sometimes I miss them, but the overall story line, the graphics and especially the game play in GW2 has won me over. I find GW2 far more challenging, and the story line is detailed and in-depth and keeps you enthralled in the gameplay. I will point out, when it comes to dungeons - not completing any dungeons in GW2 does not prevent your progressing in the game, nor does it take away from the gameplay. I can honestly say, I no longer miss WOW.

    You have a very healthy attitude when it comes to consuming entertainment. GW2 sure has its flaws but what game doesn't? Recognizing that the game not forcing you to play a certain way is actually your ticket to choose your own endgame is the biggest hurdle, I think, that players coming from other MMOs have to realize and overcome. And you you can freely jump in as a young whipper snapper and engage with this elite and have a blast doing it. The best part is everyone gets a part of the reward. Really makes it fun and exciting and you dont feel like some lonely new player in a starter zone no one visits anymore. Its seems like everywhere i venture is always in action.

    • @jgkitarel
      @jgkitarel Před 10 měsíci +1

      Eh, it depends on the time of day and where the world boss rotation is at, but every starter region (bar Ascalon for the Charr) has a world boss comes out at specific times. The Guild Wars 2 wiki has that timer. The hard part is doing the map exploration so you can get to them all from nearby waypoints, lol. At the same time, near every zone has a meta event of some sort on various timers. Some can tie into a world boss (if it is the apropriate time), but even when not, the meta event is fun as a whole.

    I do have to admit GW2 is the best representation of what an MMORPG should be.
    Almost every other game forgets the 'Massive Multiplayer' part entirely.
    They think just because everyone outside of an instance can 'See' and 'Interact' with each other is good enough for it to be an MMORPG and just litter the world with quests and call it a day and move onto 'Instanced Content', which what almost all other MMORPGs put 90% of their focus towards.
    GW2 maps are never wasted and there's always an abundance of players in every single zone at all times of the day.
    This is the only game that feels like a living and breathing world to me.
    I personally believe GW2 excels at providing the players with a grand scale spectacle, that brings together all players who are just going about their day to be drawn into one of these events, which are usually spread out over the map, these smaller events in-turn lead these players from all over into one location, which then culminates into a huge final battle towards the end.
    This is truly a feast for the eyes and something I believe every MMORPG enjoyer should experience at least once in their lifetime.
    To be honest, I'm all for horizontal progression, and I'm over the never ending 'Gear-Treadmill'.
    To me personally I feel like all almost the other MMORPGs are like a second Job, but GW2 is like watching Netflix. It's relaxing, respects your time, every day feels fresh and it leaves you wanting for more.

I tried to chase them and couldn't keep up but it was such a rush of a moment - everyone should experience these moments in an MMO I think.
      When I first stepped into Verdant Brink in Heart of Thorns, somewhat aware this was a 10 year old expansion, I was genuinely confused as to why there was still players everywhere, such a fun zone that one, and it's only uphill from there.

      So true! And youll see, anet have a secret weapon they like to use from tume to time. They often add in collection or achivement an item or 2 that drop from old content/event, wich encourage older player to go back. And they often update those old map with new event, new "quest like" activity or all kind of content, wich again encourage older player to go back in older content. Its genius! And those addition rae not just boring fetch quest, they always fit with the lore and the current story, wich give a sence of immersion. Example, I need essence of all dragon to craft a legendary weapon, well make sence to go on map where there dragon minion, like zombie in orr or icebrood in the shiverpeak.

    Nice vid mate. What I really appreciate about guild wars 2 is the fact that there is real effort from the devs to make sure the entire game world stays relevant, there's nothing worse than looking at once loved zones and seeing 1-2 people an hour. It's not for nought that one of the frequent reoccuring daily pve missions is to complete X events in zone Y or that world bosses on timers appear in some of the lowest zones or that map completion is a thing. Simply put, I have not played another MMO where the world feels so "alive".
    I remember when I started GW2 wayback and as a complete newbie running into the svanir shaman event - I was amazed at how many people turned up and equally amazed to find out that I could join in without having to ask, being in a party or squad and being able to just participate on a whim. It sold me then and there.

    I wish many MMO players (especially WoW players) would open their minds and see that the point of a game is to have fun and not increase your character power all the time.

      @@deaconfrost796 the game is famous for PVP cuz it has the best pvp in MMO but PVE is widely popular too and also you have WvW which is really fun. I started WOW at SL and quit mid DF. If a 5 years old game had the same content WOW had in the past years it would sure be dead by now. I feel like WOW players are stuck emotionally in this game and can't leave. If retail is bad, the solution is classic. If classic is meh, let's give retail another chance. Other games would for sure die. Very nice video, Wilstorm! 👍I also played WoW for several years and ended up in GW2 like 10 years ago... there are a lot of other points I could add to your listing of course. E.g. - one very important aspect for me, is the community: whenever you need help, or have a question in GW2 - you will be helped for sure! There is no boss / quest / achievement that you can`t do - even as a solo player - as you will always find someone to help you, or can easily join a bigger "squad" for your needed content. It`s also very remarkable, that you can find CZcams videos for like 99% of all the questions you might have in GW2 - even if it`s something trivial, like finding a single stupid "vista", and how to get there - i have to say, that i never experienced something like that in any other game! 😀

    I think it is important to note that Guild Wars 2 has a very long gear grind system, just like other MMO's, but at least it has an end, half-way through it, it's really just min-maxing your infusions for that extra 90 stat.
    But until you reach full ascended gear, you won't have best in slot, and that can take a while for new players to accomplish, especially without help.
    So the game still has gear grind, long after level 80. But it feels a ton better than other mmos.
    Another absolute bs myth is that GW2 doesn't have the holy trinity. It absolutely does have tank, healer, dps and support builds.

Most of the time visual cues and tells don't matter but when they do, ouchie, you die because you can't see them. You just buy the expansions once (since the core game is actually free to play) and you can play forever. Also important to mention that once you craft a legendary, its available to all classes that can use that type of equipment on ur account, u can craft legendaries and sell them on the marketplace to make gold. ALSO also, the fractals are pretty fun, raids are cool, class system is unique, story is mostly interesting especially in everything after the main game, 90% of all content is still relevant (except for dungeons, but even those offer something that if u ask ur guildies they’ll most likely jump at the chance to do it). The open world content is so good, some guilds run this ONE massive event that came out with the base game TO THIS DAY, (triple threat - check it out on youtube) and still fills the maps instantly lol. WvW is fun as hell, New players get so much free content too before having to spend money on expansions. Its really great.

    I would like to point out the one thing (Which sadly is not mentioned on this list, but that's perfectly okay) is that GW2 has NO Subscription fees! You can play most of the base game for free, or you can buy the full game once (not including the LWS or Expansion content) and not have to worry about game time at all! the boon system is a bit of a double edged sword in my mind, on one hand it adds a level of complexity to both the build craft and gameplay. but on the other, the overwhelming importance of stacking as a group makes some of the endgame group content a bit monotone and spammy

    I really liked GW2 for the several months I played it. I max-leveled one or so of every class and I agree with much of what is stated in this video. The world itself seems to have a life of its own and is just beautiful. The area events are pretty cool, exploration is amazing, and the class abilities are a lot of fun! The quests are engaging and interesting, the mounts and their abilities add their own value as well. For me personally however, I mainly stopped playing because I somehow still managed to get bored with the game. I was never really able to meet any players with common interests, so I never quite made it to end-game in that regard. I know that was a "me" issue, and I don't expect everyone else to have this problem. I just tend to hyper-focus on certain aspects which in turn seems to lessen my social abilities. However, I would highly recommend GW2!

      I've been playing it since launch. This is a game where you can put it down, come back several months later, and it is still fresh and relevant. Yes, there are details that you will want to bone up on, depending, but you don't need to. The game is also very casual friendly, which benefits me, given I work a full time job, with regular overtime (mostly on my own initiative but not always) depending on the time of year. And I admit, I play other MMOs, depending on my interest at the moment, and I can simply just come back to GW2 any time I feel like it and not have to worry about what I missed.

    Blizzard brain washed players making them care only about item level and buying progress. Most wow players doesn't understand what it actually means to EARN something anymore. GW2 requires different mindset. It's not perfect but it's pretty close to true mmorpg, when WoW became just a true hamster wheel.

      Guild Wars is a dying game though...
      I am all for horizontal progression as I believe it is superior for RPGs. However, it's not Blizz that brainwashed anyone here.. Our monkey brains like to see number increases, and that's a fact.
      However, if you constantly chase vertical progression you eventually get yourself burned out, which is what happened during Shadowlands. Blizz understood this, which is why the current expansion has less vertical progression and more things to explore, collect and gain..
      The next WoW expansion will have more of this as well..
      You see the secret is to have both horizontal AND vertical progression in your game. Horizontal progression gives everyone more choice so everyone finds something they like. Vertical progression satisfy our primal need to watch numbers grow. Both are needed...

    I have barely started the game; my character is only level 13. Mostly, I've just been setting up keybinds and learning the UI. I played WoW for 14 years, but Blizzard has been so disappointing that I deleted my account and went out looking for other games. I played FF14 for a few months, but that didn't feel like the right one either. From what I can tell, GW2 looks super unique. It takes the MMO formula and make every single aspect engaging. Just got the temporary raptor mount, and just riding it around was super fun. In your clip where you're just exploring, a swarm of players on different mounts rushes past... Wow, that is so immersive. How could you not join them after seeing something like that?

  • @chancewestonjordan
    @chancewestonjordan Před 10 měsíci +6

    I went from being an elitist CE raider to a chill ass GW2 casual and I've been loving every moment of it. Since I started playing in MoP I'd constantly hear these 435 year old fossils lament about attunements and 40-mans, so I'd go try and make a twink at 60 or do the Molten Front questline to at least see what it was like, but after doing it once, it's done, and I'm back to wiping 60 times on Kil'Jaeden because our GM refuses to kick his dogshit ass best friend who does blue parse DPS and our RL keeps inviting anyone with a feminine character name into the group just to do 1/3 of my healing, then both the GM and RL will get onto our Maw of Souls 5 man spams and vent about bad and lazy players while a 6th dude is farming Vantus Runes and talking about grinding up AP on their 5th character because it does marginally higher DPS on one boss.
    Now I'm doing like 85% of benchmark and cruising through content with other casual and fun-first players, and actually having a better time, too. I went back to see what Dragonflight was and honestly, Dragonriding is nothing compared to the plethora of fun mounts offered by GW2, and while the challenge of a +23 key is fun with the right people, it lacks the sense of drama and theatrics from like the Dragon's End meta or Drakkar. It's not like everything is GW2 is easy, obviously, I only just cleared KO CM for the first time the other day, and also of course there are still dumbasses who demand 250LI for IBS strikes, but I think the fact that after a raid or strike I can just go glide around to collect VM instead of having to help craft 50 feasts for the next raid relieves a lot of stress about the game.
    I'm kinda with you in terms of the story. I'm not expecting the GW2 writers to give me a playable version of Chinatown, I just want it to let my character to badass things with a team of side characters that rally under me. Even though I find Jory and Caithe pretty annoying for most of the story, they're far better than... Nathanos, Genn and Anduin...who are all somehow more powerful and important than our characters in an escapist self-insert fantasy game. Still though I think the story/world lore might be what keeps players from getting into GW2 fully. Asura, Sylvari and Charr are pretty cool once you know what they are, but they don't have the pre-existing "nerd clout" as your Orcs or Elves or Trolls.
    One thing I don't think you mentioned that I love about GW2 is that the combat system feels almost like a fighting game, with like the shield4 blocks, break bars, confusion, dodging. You really can make even some Patchwerk world bosses like DBS feel a lot more engaging than it would in WoW. I also love how they alter some maps based on metas, like Tarir's treasure room being sealed until you beat the Octovine and Palawadan becoming Scrooge McDuck's place once you kill Amala. When a world boss dies in WoW, they respawn in 15min and that's it. Some parts of the map requiring things like Ley-Line gliding or the frog antidote or Jackal portals is super cool, too.
    Bottom line for me is that GW2 actually feels like an MMO while WoW is a co-op dungeon crawler that forces you to grind bullshit in the open world to start playing the actual game. There are still things I think WoW does better, like supporting addons, transmog diversity and the fucking PC requirements to run the game on high settings, but I'm very glad that this game is getting more and more traction despite its rough start and the whole IBS fiasco. Level 10 access to raptors gave quite a few of my friends the push to stop complaining about it being a "too much walking" game so I hope they do more to get new players invested in their game and lore in general and I hope this video and others like it singing its praise will bring more players into the game.

      I can't even tell you how much this comment resonated with me, I've just two weeks ago finished the CE slog, 200 pulls on Sarkareth and all the stuff about your guild and GM just had me in tears. Don't get me wrong, I love WoW and enjoy the PVE content but that is literally all I engage in (Raid/m+) and GW2 has opened my eyes to everything else an MMO should be.
      Yes I love the combat style! I mentioned it in a comment somewhere below that it's this strange mix of targeting (like WoW) and freestyle combat (something kinda like Elden ring) and it's so engaging and satisfying. Unfortunately I can't inlude everything in a top 10 video... I didn't even talk about how the game is basically free, purchase once, no subscriptions!
