DeMartini and Crosby are two of the most overlooked guitar duo's in Metal from the 80's. Not saying they are King/Hanneman or Tipton/Downing...but, for what they did for Hair Metal....the contribution they gave goes criminally unnoticed!!!
DeMartini or Crosby could play Kerry King into the dirt. King is good for Slayer, but I would argue the other two are much better musicians overall. King couldn't pull off a groovy solo like that.

Loathe the hair metal label, my buds and I use PARTY METAL! Glam metal is better than lazy, hair metal term ( long hair has been known to appear in a few other rock genres as well....like ALL of em' ! ) but is still reductive to quite a number of hard rocking, very talented players! Cheers!
Ratt was so much more influential than they get credit for. The first wave of California / LA Heavy Rock bands. They also were part of the first MTV heavy bands that influenced teens everywhere. Twisted Sister, Ratt & Quiet Riot
Pyromania and Van Halen 1&2 pretty much wrote the formula on this riff/tone style
They were also one of the most successful as well. Two multi platnuim albums. Five consecutive albums that all went at least Gold

Just look at live setlists, lol. They stick to those two for 95% of a full show and NEVER touch upon past that if they're just an opening act

Well as a 63 yo metal head I'm glad you fellas enjoyed it. They had a some what unique sound I loved then and now. In the early 80's i worked at a music store so I always had access to new bands and anything they put out. Ratt was one of my favorites then and still is to this day.
And I vote yes to the RATT-A-THON. Keep up the great work guys.

Really I think that RATT is as good as G'N"R, too bad they lost Robbin Crosby, they may have had a chance to keep that magic together.
Ratt is an amazing band. People tend to forget how great they were. Most bands like Poison, Motley Crue, Warrant, and many others looked up to Ratt, they even opened for some of them. Ratt just couldn’t keep up as time kept moving. Then again, they were still killing it.
I've been a Ratt fan since Round and Round premiered on MTV. The biggest mistake they made, was waiting until Detonator to release a power ballad. By then, all the bands you named, had already blown up. "You're Giving Yourself Away" is one of Ratt's best songs. That whole album is a banger.
@@HairMetalNation. I agree with you. Personally to me, their biggest downfall was the conflict between band members and that contributed to their decline. They will still be mentioned in the history of metal because of how influential and skillful they were. Their sound was heavy but very precise. It’s 2022 and people are still head banging to their songs. Now that says a lot.

@@anthonyrowland9072 Robbin was definitely RATT with Demartini. It’s very unfortunate what happened to him and yes that was also part of their decline. What’s even more sad is that RATT is still one of the most underrated bands of that time as influential as they still are, people forget they were once the definition of the Glam/Metal scene.
Lack of Communication is another banger. Lots of good Ratt tunes to choose from. Shame Shame Shame and Way Cool Jr are a couple good ones also. Body Talk was featured in the movie Coming to America

Yes we need more Ratt- Back for More, 7th Avenue, Dance, Lovin You's a Dirty Job, Nobody Rides for Free, In Your Direction, It Doesn't Matter. All bangers
7th Ave is incredible and that tune, for me, has the best tone and attitude on Dancing Undercover. I wish them and Beau Hill found more of that for the rest of the album. Still fun to listen to but a notch down from the first two.

I love that you did this song! This is my favorite song on this album. Lay it Down and You're in Love are the hits. What makes a great band is the shit that doesn't make the radio. This keeps you from being a one hit wonder. This is Ratt's best release.... then Dancing Undercover. Ratt is a very, very, very underrated band.

my favorite tracks were always the ones that didn't get air play, the ones that got all the airplay were to me, overplayed and I developed ear fatigue.

Ratt definitely did have more edge and grit to their sound than a lot of their peers. Always made me appreciate them. Another band who could hit on that same level sometimes was Dokken. Man, I can go from technically complex crazy stuff and also balls to the wall heavy, nasty death metal - but yet at the end of the day, Ratt is still one of my favorite bands. I've always felt they were severely underrated.
This attitude, the rockstar life, this is what rock music is missing these days. The heaviness and catchiness with a pop twist, we need that rock again.

The clean guitar that sparkles and weaves in and out of this song is amazing too. So many layers to follow. Ratt is deceptively challenging to play too, Robin Crosby has great riffs and plays some interesting colors in his chords, sounds like plain power chords but really it adds so much to how these guys have a slightly different and “cooler/slicker” sound. It gives their songs a mood you don’t get with Crue or Poison or many others. I always loved Ratt over Motley Crue.
Me too ..I was always a bigger fan of RATT & still am...Warren & Robbin were just a special duo & could honestly play better than Mick Mars (with no disrespect to him)
@@prodigal71 Mick is more famous now than the RATT guitarists, but it's because of the longer career and Motley Crue is large because of the personalities in the band. Each member of the Crue has star power that exceeds their music.

I always thought the main solo was Robbin and the others are Warren. Warren has a tighter picking style than Robbin and hits the pinch harmonics differently. But I LOVE that it’s more subtle between them sometimes. And, most importantly, I could be completely and totally wrong 😂
Another great guitar intro is "Your in Love' from this same album. A special record from my youth. My first concert was Ratt on the Invasion tour. Listening to this brings back to being 13 again. So glad you guys are into Ratt!
I was an assistant roadie for Jake Lee before he left to play with Ozzy and later Warren Di Martini and Crosby for a couple years back in the early 80's in San Diego and when they statrted to catch a buzz in Hollywood at Gazzari's, The Rainbow Whisky and the Roxy on Sunset. Those guys were cool and knew how to party. Let's just say I had the time of my life picking out the girls and I also got my share of action after the shows.
I saw the documentary about when they hit big. All the panties in the bus......

Actually the well-crafted main solo was Robbin Crosby (RIP) and the awesome mini-leads are DiMartini. Ratt had something a LOT of those other 80's hair metal bands were missing.
1000% agree about RATT. I love a lot of different music genres but this album is my most played of all time for those reasons. RATT and Beau Hill nailed it.

Ratt just might be my favorite band from the 80’s. Vastly underrated and I think it’s because they were on the heavier side, not as commercial as most of the other bands. Warren Demartini was a teenager when he joined the band. Absolute guitar god. Stephen pearcy had the unique Ratt voice that made them so different than the others. Robin Crosby was the dude who had his hand in crafting the Ratt tunes. Juan Croucier their bass player actually wrote this song. Their producer Beau Hill had a big big part in developing their sound and their songs. I don’t think he gets enough credit. Y’all check out “body talk” “you’re in love” “dance” “way cool jr” those are fun ones to do a video on. Love you guys!!!

@@psychoserenade9382 Yes, but it was never released as a single. That's what I was getting at. Unlike "Home Sweet Home" or "Without You" which were both released as singles and were huge hits for Motley Crue.
Agreed that Beau was probably instrumental in enhancing that special sauce they had on Cellar and pepping up even more on Invasion.

I'm a Hip Hop & Metal Head I've been following this channel since your reaction to Megadeth's Holy Wars a few years ago, & I love this channel! As a 49y/o Black dude & musician from Long Island NY[grew up as a bassist then gravitated to drums], I grew up on everything from funk, soul, blues, rock, classic rock, heavy blues-rock, & metal, Ratt was one of the bands responsible for the entire culture of 80's rock. The entire 80's rock scene was a microcosm of the 70's Glitter Rock[New York Dolls] & Shock Rock[ Alice Cooper, KISS], and Van Halen blew the doors completely of the hinges and were the KINGS of stadium 🏟 Rock 🎸.
Quiet Riot, Motley, Ratt, Stryper, Dokken, UFO, I could go on but I won't. But on my outro, I'll give you guys my ideas for great metal, killer-riff tracks that you guys should really do reviews on: Van Halen- Unchained Live Oakland CA '81, Ratt-Body Talk, Stryper-You Know What To Do, King Diamond-Black Horsemen, Victimized and most Kiss all, King Diamond-INVISIBLE GUESTS!!

Slight correction: all the guitar solos were the late Robin Crosby. That track is one of my favorites to play on guitar it's just so much fun.

It can sometimes hard to tell between them, to the unseasoned ear, because they both used Seymour Duncan JBs and similar Marshall stacks.

Ratt was basically my intro to metal. They’re a criminally underrated band who out out some great music. Warren and Robin (RIP) were an amazing guitar duo.

Ratt became my favorite group at the beginning of this year. I’ve been a metal head since the mid ‘90s but only first heard Ratt eight years ago with Round and Round, my co-workers were blasting it at the sheet metal factory I worked at back then. Out Of The Cellar, their debut is nasty from start to finish. Invasion Of Your Privacy is great too. DeMartini is a beast of a soloist and Stephen’s raspy ass voice fits their badass riffs just right
Their debut was actually the Ratt EP which I'm guessing you haven't heard. It is my pleasure to introduce it to you! Wait until you hear the opening riff to You Think You're Tough. Gonna blow your mind. ;)

RATT is the first band that got me into Metal!... And Out Of The Cellar Is The First Album I ever bought and still my favorite album to this day!... You guys should react to the whole album sometime!... Definitely badass!! 🤘

the other guitar player , Robbin Crosby, at this time was just as much of the lead in other songs , by Ratt !!!!....he wrote alot of the first 2 albums !!!! ....just to let you know...neither Robin or Warren wrote this song....the bass player Juan Croucier wrote this song..........they weren't slept on, Ratt, Dokken , , Motley Crue, Twisted Sister , all came out about 1982....so they kinda were the first hair metal bands....the first 5 Ratt Albums are really good....but the 1st two albums, ''invasion of your privacy '' and ''out of the cellar''....EVERY SONG IS A BANGER....I feel that ROUND AND ROUND , is too commercial and tame.....check more songs from those 2 albums album....like I'm Insane ...You're In Love ( video is great too )...Lack Of Communication ....Closer to My Heart !!!!!
Ratt is one of my favs. As you pointed out, their songs are simply well constructed and have amazing guitar work. Now with Spotify it doesn't make sense anymore, but before, when you had to choose which music you wanted to have in your phone, there would always be an album in rotation from Ratt to bike around. And I say album, and not songs, on purpose. In opposition to motley crue, which have good songs but too many fillers and few amazing songs, Ratt delivered great albums one after the other. Even their comeback album was impressive.
So yeah, i will be happy to hear more Ratt songs here. Hopefully you will be well guided and don't end up listening to one of the few weaker ones 😅 (which all bands inevitably have)
Van Halen is my favorite band by far, but Ratt is right up there. This wasn't even one of their popular songs, but it is quickly becoming one of my favorites!

Ratt was my shit back in High School when they came out! Bros every single album I ran out to get!!! I have them all on cassette! I still play them over and over and over. There is a lot of nostalgia but that isn't the main reason why I like them. They have it all in my opinion. Riffs, solos, drums, bass, Stephens vocals and catchy AF.... perfection. So so many great hits! RATT was huge back in the day! They were as big as all you mentioned.

If I'm not mistaken (and I believe I'm correct in stating this) that Robbin "King" Crosby played the lead on this song...he was basically relegated to the rhythm guitar player bc Warren was just so damn good. My favorite '80s band by FAR....love the reaction & since you did Lay It Down on Patreon I'll be joining just for that. AND I hope you do Way Cool Jr or You're in Love at some point bc Warren kills on those songs!!

I know by Dancing Undercover, Warren had kinda taken most of the lead work...but back when they were trading off, well it's also why (along with Maiden, Priest, Queensyrche, Aerosmith, etc) I just gravitated to twin guitar bands. Big RIP to King

Happy to see 3 for 3 props for RATT! They were one of the rare bands of that time that could straddle the line between "cheese" and "legit", but seemed more at home on the "legit" side. Here's a few other harder-edged bands from around that time and into the early 90s that have a similar bluesy, groovy grit.
* Four Horsemen (founded by a former bassist for the Cult) - pretty much anything from 1991 album Nobody Said It Was Easy but start with "Rockin' Is Ma Business".
* Tangier - "Southbound Train"
* Kix - "Cold Blood" or "Blow My Fuse"
* Whitesnake - "Slow an' Easy"
* Cinderella - "Back Home Again" or "Once Around The Ride"
* Badlands - "Whiskey Dust"
* Extreme - "Wind Me Up". Less gritty but more funky, and featuring one of the true guitar gods of the past 35 years, as well as the guy who would go on to sacrilegiously replace Sammy Hagar in Van Halen. Nothing against Gary as a vocalist, but anyone other than Dave in VH is sacrilege.
* Saigon Kick - "Suzy". Gritty, funky, and heavy.
* Motley Crue - "Live Wire"
* Damn Yankees - "Bad Reputation"

You pretty much nailed it. Ratt and Motley were mates at the time (Motley even appeared in a Ratt video ;Back for More' as cheeky cops - great song though). The guitarists and riffs drove Ratt and they never did a "power ballad" until 1990. They were more straight ahead music and riffs. There was alot of dysfunction in Ratt and I dont think any of them could stand each other after 1986. Just didnt have Doc McGhee as manager (Motley, Kiss, Bon Jovi) to push them
But my god did they have riffs and songs. Wanted Man is right up your ally, - it was the lead song to out of the Cellar album (Round and Round). Nobody rides for free was the outro to the Keanu Reeves/ Swayze Point Break Movie and is a subtle banger with super tasty guitar work. Way Cool Jr great riff, a bit cheesy on the chorus, Shame, Shame Shame is my favorite DeMartini riff to playas a guitarist - just epic. In your direction is another banger and you know "Body Talk" from Eddie Murphys Golden Child
The first 3 albums were all great. The band stopped writing together after the 2nd and the later albums had a bit more filler and fluff as they hired the same co-writers, Desmond Child and Diane Warren, every other Hair metal band at the time to help write power ballads and cheesy hooks

For someone who grew up on this, late 70's 80's music, I always wish I could go back to when I first heard a song and just a killer riff, groove, hook and hair raising all over! I watch you guys and it really does draw me back and bring back them memories!

You hiit it right on! DeMartini was a guitar hero of mine. I first heard him in 1982. I was a budding 13 year old lead guitarist. Can you believe that a producer later in their discography wanted to replace his guitar work for someone else?!?!

Warren was recognized at the time as a premier guitarist and did it with a cool laid back style. I saw guitar god Uli John Roth couple years ago at a small club and as a pretty rad bonus he invited Warren up on stage for a couple jams. I was super stoked.

That was very impressive that you guys actually recognized what a lot of us from that era feel. The difference with RATT compared to their contemporaries is their music never gets old or tiresome. Just had the old debate, if you’re stuck on a deserted island and could only listen to one band forever, gotta be RATT. Please, please do a RATT-a-thon. You won’t be disappointed
Ratt, Mötley Crüe, Twisted Sister and Cinderella get lumped in with the Glam bands that came after. I understand why someone who wasn't there would do that but they were definitely a notch above.

There's a big 4 of speed metal, we all know that. Glam metal bands and anything metal got murdered when NIrvana hit with the Nevermind album. What came out on the other side was classic rock, classic hard rock and it's all the music that has stong value, classic sound that will outlive most of us.

Warren D. Martini is a member of the holy trinity of hair band guitarists who set the bar for ALL guitarists in the LA Metal scene of the 80's. Jake E. Lee (Ozzy, Badlands, Red Dragon Cartel), George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob), and Warren. Warrens tone is amazing. Lay It Down's opening riff after 30yrs STILL gives me chills to this day. Never a huge fan of Pearcy either, but like Vince Neil of Motley Crue, he just works in the band... That however is a testament to how good the band is. The singer did NOT hold them back because the riffs... those fat juicy riffs!

RATT! That's all you need to know. Back in the day, they WERE as big as Crue and Leppard. But, dysfunction and in-fighting within the band caused LOTS of problems, and ultimately, the death of Robin Crosby was the end of RATT. That said, I think NOW, they are EXTREMELY underrated both as a band and individually. Warren has been getting some love for his work over the last couple years, but Bobby does NOT get his due as a drummer. Fun fact: When I saw them for the "Out of The Cellar" tour, the opening band was an unkown band named Bon Jovi.🤘🏻
Warren DeMartini is my favorite of all the hair band guitar players. He got such incredible tone through his tube amplifiers, every bit as unique as EVH, and somehow managed to combine vintage chord structures with the power chord approach to metal. For reasons that are beyond my ability to articulate, the vintage chords sound so damned good through tubes, but don't always convey the balls and power we associate with the more modern chord structures of metal. Warren found that perfect combination of complex chord structure and straightforward power. He and EVH were the best in their field in my opinion.
I stumbled upon your reaction videos and they're great! I'm an 80s metal boy and it makes me smile to see how much the two of you not only ENJOY the music, but you critique it accordingly and respectfully. And I enjoy how much fun you have doing it. Good stuff. And I agree, Ratt is fuckin' BANGIN'!

Invasion of your privacy is in my top 10 80s non-Van Halen albums. There is no filler and many gems. Warren is my #3 favorite guitarist behind Eddie & Page. You've got to do You're In Love, Never Use Love & Give It All next.
My first concert that i attended was when RATT opened up for Bon Jovi in 1985 in Tulsa, OK. Bon Jovi was good but i was there to see RATT. I was 15 years old but it is a memory that i will live with until my time is up. Thanks for the reaction and for the trip down memory lane.
Warren is an amazing guitar player.... This whole album is fire, in fact their first 3 albums are total fire guys. I want to give praise to rythm guitar player Robin Crosby "may he rest in peace".
Also Robin Crosby is the founding member with Pearcy and the main songwiter / arranger.

Ratt tends to be overlooked because they were in decline by 1990 and broke up in 1992, but they were one of the most successful 80's rock bands w/ 4 platinum records in a row... the original band was the most memorable - Stephen Pearcy (vocals), Robbin Crosby and Warren DeMartini (guitars), Juan Croucier (bass) and Bobby Blotzer (drums)... Ratt was originally formed by Robbin Crosby and Stephen Pearcy in the 70's... the others came in later, and they had to work hard for recognition in an L.A. scene w/ Motley Crue, Dokken and Quiet Riot...
Unlike most rock/ metal bands of their era, Ratt did not want to be full-on heavy... they wanted to play songs w/ pop melodies and big guitars - 'Elvis meets John Wayne' was what they called themselves and they looked very glam. After being passed on by most labels, they recorded the 'Ratt' EP in 1983, and that independent release still stands out as one of the great rock records... heavy on guitars and grooves, but sounding so catchy and memorable... They were signed to Atlantic Records in 1984 and became huge w/ the album 'Out of the cellar' after the single 'Round and round' became a massive MTV hit single and they spent months on tour to promote it.
When 'Invasion of your privacy' was released in 1985, there was some worry if the album would decline in sales, but Ratt had another platinum success and were headlining arenas by then - Bon Jovi, Queensryche and Poison were some of the bands that opened for Ratt in the 80's. Unfortunately, the band's infighting and lead singer Stephen Pearcy's difficult personality made the creative process volatile. Guitarist Robbin Crosby, who was Ratt's leader, found himself being upstaged creatively in the studio and in concerts... Crosby declined into 'h' abuse and his absence made Ratt a very unstable situation ... Subsequent Ratt albums went platinum, but did not enjoy the same success as 'Out of the cellar'... Years later, Juan Croucier (bass) recalled that Robbin Crosby's deterioration was "instrumental" in Ratt's decline.

Very intuitive comments regarding Ratt being “a little bit different” because most would agree. They were much more than most of the bands in that era. More grit and they preceded the hair metal scene as they began in the late 70’s in various iterations. Great band and outstanding guitars by Crosby and DeMartini.
Ratt is so underrated. My favorite song by them is the movie version from Point Break along with the instrumental movie score arrangement of Nobody Rides For Free.

Even though my taste in music went heavier, those first few Ratt albums will always have a special place in my heart. Yeah they were grittier, but they also did some cool things guitar wise like having sections where both guitars playing different rhythms at the same time. Also, yeah… DeMartini is legit. FUN FACT: Before joining Ratt, DeMartini was roommates with Jake E. Lee who was their prior guitarist and went on to become Ozzy’s guitarist for Bark at the Moon and The Ultimate Sin.
It's grittier because it's Ratt-nRoll! This band worked their asses off in the 80s. The released 4 albums in a 5 year span. Non stop touring and having seen them 5 times in that era, I can say they always put on a great show. Every show was bigger every year. They had their own sound and Dimartini is a hugely underrated guitarist.
I was a teenager on the 80's I was deep in the hair band stuff. I'm on my 50's now and very little of that stuff still sounds good to me. I sometimes laugh at some of the stuff I liked back then. Ratt is definitely not one of them. I mean out of the cellar does not have a bad song on it. I've always said out of the cellar and pyromania by def Leppard were two of the best whole albums ever made. 👌
Warren was the master of guitar "fills." Just like a drummer doing fills, Warren took that vibe and incorporated it into his playing.
Ratt is legit. Some of the bands from that era/genre aren't, drowning in cheese. Ratt and Mötley Crüe brought the attitude and as you said, grit.
Home Sweet Home ruined everything lol. After that song hit the stratosphere a lot of bands adopted a softer, more glam image and sound. First half of the 80s was far superior to the second half IMO. And I think it's largely due to that.
Loved Ratt. It was different that that scene , Stephen was gritty and black hair , not the typical blonde haired singer at the times . 💯 of your comments! They had soul to their playing , and can be raw and heavy at the same time! Love them still!

Oh, how I love hearing you guys enjoying some Ratt. I agree with you 1000% that they are much, much tougher/grittier than other similar bands of that time. Really, really superb songwriting for the most part too. And that voice! Again, thank you guys for bringing these classics forward at this late stage in the game.

Ratt was my first concert Bon Jovi and Mama’s boys opened up rat in mid 80s $16 tickets and that was a seat and you could walk down to the floor. Kids nowadays will never know that.💯🤘
Ha ha. Saw that same tour. First time I saw RATT though was as the opener for Billy Squire. Also saw them headline with Poison as the opener when they were touring for Dancing Undercover.
