In this vocal mixing tutorial we learn some specific techniques to make your vocal sit properly on a loud mix. We've all had our vocal sound too thin when it has to fight against loud 808s and roaring chorus's, today we learn how to fix that with a mix of techniques :)

naw, my vocals just need to eat
It's extremely interesting knowing just how much there is to talk about on the topic of compression and EQ. And you managed to explain and demonstrate it all, whitelist also being interesting to listen to! Amazing work as always :)
Ah thank you so much my friend! Glad it was interesting :)
Bro I've watched hundreds of tutorials and this is by far the best one ever thank you!
These videos are insanely helpful thank you so much for these. I've always had people record my vocals successfully and found that even when i record off my phone a video of my vocals they sound okay but once I setup my home studio to do it - awful thin stuff. This has given me the confidence to get back to recording and producing my own stuff again and restore faith in my vocal ability.
Also, I love the mic drop moment when you added in the Serum @9:50 haha
This makes me insanely happy! To be fair, we hold ourselves to higher standards in studio than on the phone, and in the studio we have to compete with so many other elements :) glad this vid helped!
Perfect timing! I'm in the midst of fumbling with my first mix, and making the vocals sit with the rest of the mix is much, much, very much harder than I anticipated! Gotta appreciate how easy and logical you make it seem. Haven't touched anything labelled as parallel compression so far.. guess it's time.
Thanks for uploading tutorials like this! Thankyouthankyouthankyououou
Glad I could help! Would love to hear the mix if you ever want to share :) parallel is your friend do not be scared! lol
Oh, the tutorials like this one, where people have sent you their songs and you sprinkle some perfecting mixing sorcery on top of them, are incredibly, incredibly tempting. But the files that are passed to you can only be Ableton-specific project files, right? Or are there some cross-software workarounds? Maybe I'm asking silly questions.
I won't have the audacity to share my first concoction with anyone who understands music, but maybe a few more mixes later the future braver, smarter, less-confused me might!
Man for the last 2 days I watched a loooot of your content and now you literally just dropped this when I needed it to most, because I am actually making a rap song
You're slowly starting to become my favorite YT channel
Wow that means so much!! Thank you so much dude, I'm so happy to could help out you are way too kind
@@AudioHaze I maybe be kind, but your content just simply made me continue watch your videos, so I think that says something more about you rather than me.
Brother man, I have been struggling with this issue for soooooo long. I didn't even know about side chains were before this video. I tried it on all my recordings and what a difference it made. So enlightening. Thank you sir, such a great video.
Thanks man! Glad I could help, yeah return tracks are a secret weapon that is definitely under utilized!
The best audio tutorial ive seen. Thank you.
I don't even know if you solved my problems yet I'm only like 3 mins subbed already cuz I like your attitude, memery and how you welcome other people's music and how you showed the before and after right out the gate
Aw wow thank you so much thats insanely kind of you to say!! You made my day thank you
People are sleeping on how slightly you really gotta change stuff to get it to stand out, you gots the finesse. Your videos are getting higher quality every time, who knows how crazy itâs gonna be in a year.
that 7,500 subs is comin up quick ;)
Thank you Lupit, I hope it is soon too ;) lmk if you ever want to help me figure out the discord at some point, I was going to ask the community if anyone wanted to help me design it

From 7500 to 92.k.... Popped right off
Goddamn you. I thought the Fresh Air plugin looked interesting, so I tried it. It made me want to rework my entire project around it. The vocals sound good... but goddamn it man.
Its a sweet plug in! Be careful with it though, it'll blow out your mix and add ton of noise floor if you use it too much :)
Impressive use/application of compression and other tools help emphasize vocal track... excellent video.
Thank you Darin!
Top notch video as always. You deserve respect for your hustle. You give us legit quality!! Also, I like this rapper's music and I don't even like rap.
Keep the vids coming. You'll be at 10k in no time.

Thanks Sadie! Glad you enjoyed the video, and thank you for being so supportive as always :)
Super helpful!
You are soooo underrated!!
You're too nice Rod :)
That's some secret secret sauce I've being doing this exact thing For a while. Thanks for sharing my guy
Excellent video, you said youâll cover automation sometime in the future, Iâm looking forward to that. Iâm also interested to see you cover side-chain compression/ducking one of those days
Absolutely! Definitely to come, just need to find the right balance of reviews and tutorial content, definitely sometime soon :)
Bro im a completely independent recording artist (as in I literally do EVERYTHING, from point A to point Z) this is super awesome info my brother Thank You!! Now if only the dang Rcomp would work in cubasis 3 I'd be freaken thrilled!!!
OMG THIS IS EXACTLY what I was looking for.
Ah thatâs amazing Iâm glad to hear!
Like the thumbnail, also nice vid, will save it for the future when necessary
Thanks man! Hope it helps :)

you could turn down the input gain of the beat to start. That will leave you headroom to mix the vocals in
I did! Thanks for the tip though :) although this still does effect average loudness levels and peak loudness, I'd prefer the mix to not hit a limiter so hard, safe some dynamic range ya know
can you do this in audacity please ?
Absolutely loved this! Itâs great to see you getting into some of the more creative aspects of music and mixing (although I get that the algorithm doesnât always push that as far). Have you ever worked with any izotope suites or plugins? If so, whatâre your thoughts?
Thanks! Yeah its always a fine balance with the title/thumbnail/content. Trying to find a way the algorithm likes educational content more lol I've used a few! I use insight on almost all of my tracks, I've used RX a few times, they're brilliant plug ins! Pricey but amazing none the less
Acoustic room treatment is the most important thing that most bedroom producers forget
Bro! Love nd support from India đźđł
I like your content nd fan of your precise knowledge about music
I want to know which audio interface is besttttt for pro music production id14vs SSL2vs Motu. And which mic is best for pro vocal RODE NT1
sE 2200 vs Lewitt 440
Hey! Well to be fair, and interface isn't going to drastically change the microphone's tonal quality, its more about quality preamps that provide clean gain without any introduction to noise, and for the, I find the Motu and Audient interfaces are killer. That being said, I have heard the Motu interfaces are annoying on PC, I wouldn't know though
slapback delay and reverb....... BOOOOOM
Danke!
Thank you so much Rainer! Hope you enjoyed the vid :)
@@AudioHaze Yes, I did enjoy your video. Very interesting and helpful.
Idk man itâs start feeling like at some point itâs just about EQ and Volume, I have trouble understanding compression
Hey man can you help me with my Music, They always seem to sound like shit, And I rap really good But idk i think its my Software or untreated room...Or I Just Simply cant mix Vocals properly to save my life
Man, that waveform looks like it came from "CZcams 2 MP3."
Hi, friend! I have a very small movie channel on CZcams and recently I just started a podcast, I currently have a Neweer usb 700 microphone and I want to improve the quality of my live shows and the sound of the podcast, I have several condenser microphone models to decide on: 1: Samson C01U Pro, 2: Monkey Banana Hapa, 3: Behringer C1U, 4: Marantz MPM-4000U, 5: Marantz MPM-1000U, 6: Auna Pro MIC-600. I would also like to know if I would notice an improvement of some of these microphones compared to the Neweer usb 700, I am open to any type of recommendation adjusting to a maximum price of 80 or 90 euros and as a follower of yours and your channel I hope all your help possible . First of all, thank you in advance and congratulate you on your channel, I send you a hug from Spain.
Hi! For that price range have you checked out the Behringer B1 or the MXL 990? I'm not a huge fan of the Samson you mentioned, and most of the other mics you listed I haven't tried. The B1 and the 990 are both great for the price though!
@@AudioHaze Thank you very much for responding so quickly, I really appreciate it. I'm looking for a usb microphone to reduce the space I have, I recently tried an xlr microphone and a Behringer 302 usb model mixer and it was a disaster and I had to return it, the background noise it produced was greater than any usb microphone I've had before connected to the pc, that's why I'm looking for something that is plug and play and saves space, any recommendation from you will help me a lot. Thanks again, you're great.
How's the sundara for mixing?
Pretty good! I don't use it to mix, only as a reference, in general it keeps the mix pretty fat, but I wouldn't really too much on it, it can get your highs perhaps a little brittle unless you're aware of its shelf in the high end.
Hate compressions and limiters, 99% of the music industry is driven with that crap... No real dynamic singing and recording... So unnatural ... I removed all compressors from my vst list... Only kept RVox
Loved the parallel compression with the original sound it's sounding wider keeping the original vocals.
Yeah for sure, it's a hard trend to fight against, I think people are starting to ease up on the loudness wars, but it's still an issue. Thanks for the kind words!
Any recommend headphones?
The DT770 is always solid! Closed back or open back?
@@AudioHaze closeback ,ty for recommendations
@@nandysullivan3005 Yeah definitely try out the DT770 :)
Too much compression will rape the vocals make the high notes and alot of shit more
imo the solution to beats like that are to get uncompressed instrumentals. highly compressed vocals just sound horrible (to me)
Definitely, its a shame that modern production is so loud and limited, especially pop and hip hop. If you can get a file that still sounds great without loudness bias, thats the way to go.
is sethro your brother?
Hahaha no he's not
LMFAO why would u buy a nice mic if ur just going to drench it in reverb đ
lol
if your vocal sounds thin, it's probably cause it IS thin. i doubt if adele would ever sound thin.
Vocals can sound thin for a ton of reasons beyond just your voice, like vocal take, microphone, processing, phase issues, the list is endless
