Janet can sing. She has a beautiful voice. Just not a strong vocalist. Which isn't that big of a deal when you deliver great music like she did. They built a great style around that soft voice.
This really shows the genius of Terry Lewis, he was typically tasked with being the vocal producer, these deeply layered vocal stacks, are a testament to his genius, and Janet’s. No computers, no time stretching, no pitch correction, just talent
Her backgrounds always sound like that. It’s either a whole lot of tracks of the same vocal line or electronically manipulated. I wish I knew the secret.

She’s singing chords, and doing multiple takes for each note, with deadly accuracy, Michael did the same thing, The only electronic manipulation you hear is the use of a sampler to repeat certain parts, that are the same, instead of having her sing it over and over again, back then they called it ‘flying vocals’, and it was a common technique used at the time and still today, with computers, an example is the part that repeats around 4:28

She's not good at runs and strong solo techniques.... Doesn't mean she CAN'T sing. But her voice alone and control of it is fairly average

I love the esthetic of the backup vocals on this. They sound auto harmonized or something. There’s something synthetic about it.
