Mumbai, once known as Bombay, is a crowded city on the west coast of India. It's the largest city in India and a major financial hub. On the Mumbai Harbour waterfront, you can find the famous Gateway of India, a stone arch built by the British in 1924. Nearby Elephanta Island has ancient cave temples dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Mumbai is also well-known as the center of the Bollywood film industry.
The city we see today was created by joining seven islands: Bombay Island, Parel, Mazagaon, Mahim, Colaba, Worli, and Old Woman's Island (also called Little Colaba). This merging was achieved through the Hornby Vellard engineering project in 1784.
Some key facts about Mumbai: it covers an area of 603.4 square kilometers, and as of 2011, it had a population of 1.84 crores.
