This Guard is an excellent rider, the kind most horses sense is in command from the first step up into the saddle. Someone commented that this situation is most likely due to a combination of factors. Couldn't agree more. Really agree that the Guardsmen know their mounts extremely well and care for them very much. Thanks for everything you do!

Why is it so difficult for people ask permission from the guard BEFORE attempting to touch the horse? The guard knows the mood and temperament better than they do! And when they attempt to touch when it doesn't want to be touched it only causes the horse to get stressed and annoyed. Which I see a lot of people don't care about as long as they can get to touch or get their precious photo. The woman in yellow 5:01 should have NEVER APPROACHED to ask about touching the horse, can't she see the horse is stressed??? I guess her ever loving precious photo was just so much more important.🤨 RUDE, INCONSIDERATE PERSON!!! 🤬🤬🤬

If I want to take my horse out in public, I want to show him off; Perfect. People should say Wow! And be impressed. The good old Linseed oil and Stockholm tar of the old days adds a shine and a nice smart uniform colour. It also conditioned the hooves and smelled nice too. It’s not the videographers job to tell the Troopers how to do their jobs. I’ve played the video on slo-mo, paused it and enlarged certain aspects of it. There is no sign of a problem with the actual bits but there is a question about the curb chain. Horses are like children at times, they fidget and chew on things, might be a clue to a problem but equally might not, the HCMR have their own vets, if there is a problem they’ll work it out.

It is clear that there is an issue with the horses bit. This is continuously presenting itself every single time I watch these videos which is daily. Same issue, different horse, every day. • @AL-lz1hb

Agreed. Don't know why I watch these videos! Rein held too tight, using the harsh bit that is uncomfy. Jab jab (which the rider should never do) when horsey asks for his head making standing still unbearable. (A less biddable horse would go backwards upwards and some will rear and go right over backwards; Extremely dangerous to the rider.) These videos are too often Horrid to watch and yes, the same thing happens on most of these videos. So much head nodding shaking trying to gain a looser rein and some comfort.
Tough gig standing in one spot, dealing with the boredom and discomfort. Harsh bits should never be necessary. Using them because it is part of the livery should not be acceptable in this more enlightened day and age. I thought rider looked close to losing his temper. Finally at the end, he loosened the rein and and horsey could relax a little.
Regarding dealing with the public, if the horse is properly chosen for correct temperament and trained for his job, he shouldn't be a danger to the public. It is all in understanding the horse and good humane training. Having said that, guard duty is not something natural for horses to do. If a horse is bored and uncomfy it will show in unwanted behaviours.

I think the young guards are fairly clueless and supervision is pretty slack. In my day, yards were really hot on everything being just so. It was tough but you learned to do your checks. Regarding weight, it's bizarre to have overweight guards esp riders. before they start their gear is already heavy. Also just sitting on a horses back for guard duty, weight has to be an issue. For some of us we can't help looking with a more critical eye. I tend to see obsessive hard shaking, how they are basically ticking, obsessively playing with the jingly bits rattling chains, and so on. Seeing the tongue waving or flapping being bitten are all signs the rider should attend to the situation. The horse once he starts these self soothing behaviours won't necessarily be able to stop and I worry about that. Sanctuary horses near me bite the tongue or wind suck, weave and it's a sad sight. They can't just relax and enjoy life because the self soothing behaviours are baked in permanent. The royals love their animals as most of us do, but this display is not a good example of caring horsemanship. I wish I didn't watch but when I do, the least I can do is tell what I see.

They are full bits one snaffle one curb with curb chain and poll pressure. They are one of the most severe bits used. Especially in the wrong hands. You dont ride on the curb but on the snaffle yet these horses are ridden on the curb. Lots of discomfort and tangled metal in their mouth to pinch. Some horses can tolerate them, some arent used to it and some dont fit well. These horses are powerful. They start on rubber bits and progress to these bits but the bits are also traditional and part of ceramonial tack. There is one rider and horse that uses the snaffle and leaves the curb loose which is proper. The curb can be more uncomfortable if used with heavy hands and is " power steering". But a jointed snaffle can hurt too. Proper light hands should be used. These riders use a heavier, one handed grip of death basically. Some much better then others. You can research the exact tack used, and buy it yourself by doing a calvary horseguards search.

Not all horses can wear the same bit set up like here. Some are fine with a double bit others not very comfortable with this set up. The guard in this video handled this horse very well. For the sake of uniform, this is what the horses wear. How the rider can handle it is the question. Good hands, patience, and timing. And then there is the temperament of the horse. Some are more on the nervous side. Some are quiet. Some are stubborn. There's a lot of factors at play here.
