    ABU SAYYAF: Terrorist Group
    The Abu Sayyaf is a Jihadist militant and pirate group based in and around Jolo and Basilan islands in southwestern Philippines, where for more than four decades, Moro groups have been engaged in an insurgency seeking to establish an independent Muslim state. The Abu Sayyaf is responsible for the Philippines' worst terrorist attack and the world's worst terrorist act at sea, the 2004 bombing of the MV Superferry 14, where 116 people were killed.
    The Abu Sayyaf has carried out bombings, kidnappings, assassinations and extortion and has been designated as a terrorist group by Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the United States.

    1989 - The Abu Sayyaf is formed
    1990s - The Abu Sayyaf’s criminal acts are highly profitable that run into several millions of U.S. dollars, which attract many recruits and consequently increases its strength from 120 members in 1991 to a peak of 1,300 fighters in 2001
    2014 - The Abu Sayyaf pledges allegiance to ISIS, a multi-national terrorist organization, and has previously received support from Al-Qaeda, another foreign jihadist movement
    Criminal acts
    April 1991 - Grenade attack that results in the deaths of two American evangelists
    August 1991 - Grenade attack on the M/V Doulos, a Christian missionary ship docked at port, resulting in many casualties
    April 1995 - Abu Sayyaf militants wearing military uniforms attack a predominantly Christian town, indiscriminately firing at civilians, looting banks and shops, and setting fire to buildings; the rebels then withdraw, taking along 30 civilians as hostages
    February 1999 - Ambush of a vehicle carrying Christian cathechists, resulting in many casualties
    November 1993 - Abduction of an American missionary, whom they later release
    1996 - Abduction of another American missionary who manages to escape after 13 days in captivity
    March 2000 - Attack on a Catholic school that the Abu Sayyaf later burn; the militants take hostage a number of civilians, including a priest and several teachers and students; the priest, 3 teachers, and 5 students are subsequently killed
    April 2000 - Abu Sayyaf militants, using speedboats, raid a dive resort in Malaysia, where they abduct 10 foreign nationals and 11 Malaysian and Filipino resort workers, taking their hostages to their jungle bases in Jolo. The hostages are later freed after making ransom payments.
    August 2000 - Abduction of an American national, who is later rescued by Philippine forces following a gun battle with the Abu Sayyaf
    Late May to June 2001 - The Abu Sayyaf go on a crime spree
    April 2002 - Detonation of an improvised explosive in a department store in the southern Philippines, resulting in many casualties
    August 2002 - Abduction of six Filipino Jehovah’s Witnesses and their Muslim guides; two hostages are killed while some manage to escape, and the rest are rescued by government forces in May 2003
    October 2002 - In separate bombing incidents at different locations in Zamboanga - inside a pub near a military arms depot, a shopping center, and a Catholic shrine, which result in many casualties
    March 2003 - Bombing outside an airport terminal, resulting in hundreds of casualties
    February 2004 - The Abu Sayyaf claims responsibility for the bombing and sinking of a passenger ferry near Manila, where 116 people perish in the Philippines’ worst terrorist attack and the world's deadliest terrorist attack at sea.
    February 14, 2005 - In the “Valentine’s Day bombings”, explosives are set off in Davao City, General Santos City, and Makati
    2016-2017 - The Abu Sayyaf focuses its actions on piracy in the high seas, boarding 17 foreign and local ships and vessels and taking 65 hostages in kidnap-for-ransom operations.
    September 2015 - Raid on a beach resort and abduction of 4 people, including 3 foreigners
    2017 -The Abu Sayyaf joins forces with other radical Islamist groups in an attempt to establish an Islamic caliphate in Mindanao, starting the Siege of Marawi
    January 2019 - Deadly bombing inside a Catholic Church
    December 2023 - Deadly bombing during a Catholic Mass in a university gymnasium
    2002-2016 - Philippine forces train with U.S. operatives in counter-terror and counter-guerilla operations as part of the United States “Operation Enduring Freedom” in the global war on terrorism, and the Philippines has joined forces with Malaysia and Indonesia on increasing security against piracy in the Sulu Sea and nearby international waters
