I took an overnight train from Hanoi - Lao Cai a few years ago... The train was climbing up the mountains there in more or less walking pace. One of the most uncomfortable and yet most wonderful train rides of my life. Although I think I enjoyed the scooter madness in Hanoi itself even more... But it took me a few weeks to adapt. Being German the chaotic traffic really was quite unnerving at first but after a while I was driving around like a local. Totally ignoring any form of traffic rules, driving in between standing cars, evading traffic jams by driving on the sidewalk, dricing wihtout a license and after a good night out in a Bia hoi :-D
I can say without a doubt that the 6 months I lived in Vietnam have been just about the best 6 months of my life and if I ever got an offer to work there, I'd be on the next ICE train to the airport.

The picture is cloudy due to dirty window pane. The train as well as platform look very basic, but take my word....10 years from now Vietnam will boast of quality infrastructure and quality high speed trains. Vietnamese are very hard working and focused people. I won't be surprised if in say next 15 years or so (a very conservative estimate), or even earlier we shall see a bullet train on Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh city route.

Ravi Sathe First they will need a sense of personal and national pride - from the conditions I see in these videos, there is little likelihood of 'bullet' trains in any conceivable future. The poverty of this country shouts from the rooftops.
As for your comment re dirty window pane - please ! Fog/mist is NOT the result of dirty windows ! ( another sign of lack of train maintainance and overall slip shod operation - I'd like to know the amount of derailments and SPAD's for daily running statistics on the network - I bet the figures would be scary.)

Run down nation, run down railway. End of story. For CLEAN, safe and comfortable railways you need to be in Japan or Taiwan.
