    This is a very popular XL-sized Bowie knife, primarily because you can get one for $20 plus shipping. A lot of people asked me to bang on this knife to see if it holds up. I was surprised how durable it was. I've never recommended a surgical steel blade for any sort of outdoor use, until now. This thing is so thick and heavy that I can overlook the steel. It will hold up if you want an extremely large camp knife, for example if you don't want to have to carry a hawk or small hatchet, too.

    I've been using this knife's big brother, the timber rattler el paso bowie, for 2 years now. I bought it as a novelty to use for chopping and expected it to break after a couple uses, two years of heavy use later I still expect it to break every time I take it out and it's proven me wrong every single time. Throws like a champ as well.

  • @GR-cf4qh
    @GR-cf4qh Před 2 lety +2

    It's an excellent knife for the money, but it's still a cheap knife. It will take a shaving edge with very little effort, but it won't hold it for long. The blade is just too soft for that. Still, it's a big, solid, heavy duty knife that you can baton with all day and aside from being a bit duller afterwards, there won't be any damage. Considering the price, the sheath is awfully good too and if for some crazy reason I had to defend myself with it, I think it would be an excellent knife for that purpose. I kind of treat it like a heavy machete. I sharpen it on a disc sander with an 800 grit disc and then strop it on a belt sander I have fitted up with a leather belt. I sometimes use it for splitting kindling for the wood stove.
    Would I buy another one? Maybe. A huge Bowie knife like this isn't really very practical, so I'm not sure it makes much sense to spend the extra cash for a better quality one, but at the same time, how many low end knives do you want? I'd rather have one really nice one than five cheap ones. Still, as low end knives go, this is among the best.

Ive been looking for a bowie knife that i can take in the woods with me and hunt or survive out there if need be. And I think i just found one. Great video btw!

  • @mmgross144
    @mmgross144 Před rokem

    For the money you get a decent deal, BUT here’s what you’re buying: (This comes from the manufacturer’s CZcams video) The blanks are mass stamped to shape from sheets of stainless steel, annealed for grinding, ground, polished, assembled, and hilt sanded and polished, then sharpened. The only thing that resembles heat treatment is the edge becoming red hot during grinding and then dipped into water to cool it down… repeatedly. The small pins are what is holding the handle together, the large pins are fakes that are epoxied in for show. The sheath is leather but not thick. The sheath spacer is foam rubber. The knife probably won’t break but the edge won’t hold up properly either.

    It needed a better edge on it should cut through wood like butter. I have read alot of comments that say the blade shows up from the manufacture woefully dull and even that the blade has broken during limb cutting also it starts to rust relatively fast but one positive i have heard is it does sharpen up nicely. Honestly i prefer traditional Bowie knifes that have deer antler handles and made of at least carbon steel. I think he hit the nail on the head when he called it just a huge chunk of steel.

  • @hildolfrdraugadrottin7279

    There's a good chance those chips are from dirty wood. When it rains it splashes all kinds of stuff on wood.
    When I was logging we'd use a hatchet to chop though the bark of dirty wood where we intended to cut.
    If you don't you'll be sharpening your chains more often and also risk chips.
    Just thought I'd share that. When you review a blade just chop the outer layer off so your giving the blade a fair review. I'm thinking it would be useful for cleaning up wood I am sawing and I'd rather damage a thirty dollar blade than the others I have.
    Its just a really cool looking blade for a very reasonable price imo.
    And after watching several reviews it appears to be a really tough knife as well.
    If you wanna get a really great chopper give the Cold Steel Chaos Kukri a try. You won't be disappointed.

    Could you make a video about the best/safest way to deliver a chop? I mean, I know you can't teach martial arts or really any athletic activity through a video, but some discussion about how to tense the arm and wrist before and during impact would be really cool. I often feel like I over tense my wrist and absorb more shock than necessary. I dunno, just an idea.

    Just bought one and it arrived a few days ago. I am sending it out to get the clip sharpened for back cuts. It passed the paper test out of the box with no problems. The sheath I wasn't too concerned with as it will be modified for IWB carry with a frog for retention.My husband carries a 10.5" Bowie with a vicious back cut (sharpened clip). The Timber Rattler gets it done. Don't let the $$$ fool you. This knife can take it and keep going. Tiny nicks can easily be taken out with a stone. I've seen $200 - $300 Bowies not fare as well, believe it or not. Don't ignore this knife. Sharpen the clip or have it done if you plan on seriously using it as a defensive knife and yes, there are sheaths made that can make this knife literally disappear under a T Shirt. Go to James Keating's website under COMTECH and buy two DVDs. BOWIE BASICS and THE DEADLY BACK CUT. IF you are seriously considering a Bowie for defensive EDC, you owe it to yourself to learn and train correctly. You cannot go wrong with the Timber Rattler.

    • @trentklair9979
      @trentklair9979 Před 4 lety

      Oh yeah, I love to sharpen the clip but not all the way up. Four bevel diamond combat tip up over to backcut false edge very sharp first 1/2" to 1" inch or so depending on depth & length of the clip point. I like to lower the tip quite a bit too. Then just tighten the clip bevels radius up to the spine but reducing angle without razorbacking all of it. I prefer to leave upper half to quarter of clip radius blunt, partly for safety & use, mostly to not risk destroying sheath. Had two Outlaws, sold one, both modified that way plus full mirror polished by hand. Clyde is a monster, goes through 55 gal steel drum, any coins, wood, even chopped up frozen ground digging out pickup sank in snow til tires dug into earth. Dulled edge a bit, no blade damage though, only scratches in mirroring.

    I've seen quite a few reviews on this knife. How tough it's made and it can take a good beating and come back for more but, the chief complaint has been, how absolutely dull it comes right out of the box! Well, somebody must've heard that cause mine came in "razor sharp"! Fit and finish is damn near bullet proof too! I was ready to put it on the grinder to put on edge on it but didn't have to! I'm not the first one to be so lucky either, just the luck of the draw I guess. The only consistent thing I found out about this knife is, how inconsistent the whale control on the edge is... Good knife though.

    So, (I haven't read the comments) this seems like a solid knife. I can sharpen the blade, that's no problem. It seems like a better choice than some $350 bullshit knife which is exactly the same thing, but with some name attached to it. Fuck, I'mma buy this thing.

    • @ronniemorris9685
      @ronniemorris9685 Před 6 lety

      1murder99, dirt is sharper than the blade I received. However, 1 hour with the appropriate tools & my TR is cutting incredibly thin, long ribbons through paper, on every section of the blade. The blade can be made razor sharp. Yes, that big honking blade can be razor sharp. If you keep a pocket Work Sharp diamond sharpener with you, you can knock out any chip, or, roll you might get in a matter of a minute,as you're abusing this blade while chopping. My cost was $27 shipped. It'd be hard to find a better buy. And, if you lost it, or, destroyed it (very doubtful) it's only $27!

    Does this knife come very sharp right out of the box and does it hold an edge ok. Is the spine 90 degrees to take a spark from a ferro rod or is it rounded.. thanks

    • @WeAllJuggleKnives
      @WeAllJuggleKnives  Před 9 lety

      +Stargazer131000 It comes with a very broad edge that is not very sharp. The steel is a stainless steel, so it's not good for striking a ferro rod on.

      For a bit more I just bought a 2008 Mike "Alamo" Bainton Bowie for $150 from my local knife shop.
      A superb Bowie created by one of our local Guinness book of World Record knife throwers.
      Google his name and check out some of the pictures of his knife on his Facebook page.
      It's well worth a look.
