My husband and I lived four years in Baton Rouge, and this song always makes me cry. There is something very special about southern Louisiana, and the people who live there. I have lived in many different cities and states, and overseas, and I loved Louisiana the best.

I agree, I've just recently "discovered" him (I'm 23 years old) and all I knew of him before was from comedic parodies (Family Guy, Mad TV etc...) which made me laugh, but his music, and most importantly, I think, is his songwriting. I agree that the simplicity makes it remarkably accessible while never feeling mediocre. He's really growing on me.

Sam Speed I think the mayor was convicted of corruption, not anything to do with the levees. The bastard was probably solely responsible for the order to confiscate guns and deserves to be sodomized numerous times each day, for the duration of his sentence, for putting the people of his city in a position of weakness at the hands of roving savages.

Sam Speed There were 2 different floods. One in Louisiana in 1927 and then Katrina. Newman wrote this song about the flood in 1927. I did cartwheels in my living room when I heard about Ray Nigen going to prison. Serves him right that he is serving time. Crook! The NRA has an incredible video of the police taking away peoples weapons and leaving them completely defenceless. It is chilling and needs to be seen by all Americans.

For those not musically privileged, Randy Newman plays Gospel just as naturally as Ray Charles did. It might not be the goal per ce but it comes out anyway and I appreciate it. Ray Charles was attacked for playing spiritual melodies outside of church. How dare you share harmony with the outside, I guess.
