  • The Red Line is a rapid transit line operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) as part of the MBTA subway system. The line runs south and east underground from Alewife station in North Cambridge through Somerville and Cambridge, surfacing to cross the Longfellow Bridge then returning to tunnels under Downtown Boston. It continues underground through South Boston, splitting into two branches on the surface at JFK/UMass station. The Ashmont branch runs southwest through Dorchester to Ashmont station, where the connecting light rail Ashmont-Mattapan High Speed Line (shown as part of the Red Line on maps, but operated separately) continues to Mattapan station. The Braintree branch runs southwest through Quincy and Braintree to Braintree station.

    it's very surreal watching one of your videos and actually recognizing the trains and stations you're at. Nice to see videos of my local, historical, yet flawed subway system. I can also say this is one of the only videos I've seen of the new Red Line trains. Great video!

      Yes! I grew up riding the Red line to either Kendall or Central Square from Park Street, after taking the commuter train into North Station to be followed by a ride on the Green line to Park Street, to visit my grandmother in Cambridge. It was this ride that gave me the love for railroads and most anything on rails.
      When I did this, the "T" was still running the Blue Birds and PCC Trolleys, and the B&M was running Budd Liners. When the "T" brought in the "new" silver-colored Red line cars in the late 1960s, I was excited because I could sit in the front and watch the tunnel and the tracks.

    It’s interesting that CRRC made literally the exact same updated fleet for both the Red Line, and the Orange Line, plus using newer Frank Ogelsby recordings for announcements.

  • @peteriwanow7716

    The CRRC Car's have been an absolute nightmare. They continue to fall further and further behind with the delivery process. They have only two sets of trains running on the Red Line, with the final delivery set for maybe sometime in 2027. The original Pullman Standard Car's built in 1969 are going to have to keep running until then. They were overhauled in the mid 80's, but the aluminum bodies are not going to hold up forever. Same for the 1700 series built in the 80's. They never gave the Bombardier 1800 series a midlife overhaul. A lousy situation for sure.

    • @tomwujek4867
      @tomwujek4867 Před 9 měsíci +1

      The CRRC factory is not doing well with many issues on quality assurance and production. Also, the Boston Globe reported that they were actually turning in unfinished cars for final inspection. At this point, it's anyone's guess on what will happen. If it were up to me, I would strongly consider giving the 1800 series Bombardier cars a midlife overhaul and contract with a well known company such as Alstom (now owns Bombardier), Kawasaki, Siemens, etc.

    The MBTA needs a policy in place where they choose a manufacturer and then by default choose the exact opposite to complete the order. Boeing-Vertol, AnsaldoBreda, now CRRC all come to mind.

    I really hate the new redline trains, seats are fewer and really uncomfortable. Some have bars that press right into your back. The single seats have u squashed between a metal wall and plexiglass with about two feet of space, so claustrophobic, every plastic seat is hard and uncomfortable. What were they thinking!!
