- The exceptional urban sketcher Pat Southern-Pearce shares some tips about lettering, sketching and materials during her outstanding workshop at the USk Symposium Chicago, 2017. The workshop will have 3 parts:
- Part I - Lettering
- Part II - Sketching
- Part III - Materials
I hope you find the videos as inspiring as I did find her workshop! Thank you Pat for sharing this with us.
This video is about the materials used by Pat and that she shared with us during the Symposium. I'm not, in any way, connected with the companies producing these products.

You did a great job adding all the names, Deborah! Fun watching Pat work! ♥
Thanks a lot!! I'm glad the labels are useful :)
Glad it was fun CC .Yes Deborah did a brilliant job!
Great videos and very inspiring.
Many thanks for your comment! I'm glad you enjoy them 😊 Pat's sketches are amazing!
Love watching the way you work and explain things Pat. Really enjoyed your videos.Had to laugh at all the items that came out of your Mary Poppins bag. Many thanks for sharing xx😊
Glad you enjoyed the video Sheila!
Sheila..How that made me smile! Yes...its incredible how much fits in that little bag......Thankyou, lots! :)
@@patsouthern-pearce6614 do you happen to have the style info for that bag by any chance? Thank you!
just fyi, the “barnes and noble” watercolor crayons are Peter Pauper brand crayons, she mentions the name in another video and I was able to find them on amazon that way.
Thanks a lot for sharing this useful information 🥰 🥰🥰
What a bag! Fascinating and so much fun watching you Pat!
Jen ...yes.. I bought it in a luggage store in a mall in S Florida. Glad it was fun watching :)
Thank you so much for the information about the materials. Great
Hi Regina! Thanks for your message. I'm glad you find the informaiton useful!
Deborah Go's Art I actually bought the Fude fountain pen and the watercolour crayons. Thank you so much once more.
That's great, Regina! I'm very glad to hear that! How is the Fude fountain pen doing? I was thinking about buying it myself, but I haven't done yet. It would be great to know what do you think about it.
Deborah Go's Art I saw on instagram, you live in Hamburg? I live near Hamburg. Well, I'm not that happy with the fountain pen yet. The ink doesn't flow as good as in other pens. Maybe I need more practice.
Yes, I live in Hamburg and it would be nice to organize a drawing meeting, if you visit the city! Let's be friends in Facebook! :) About the fountain pen, I hear from Pat and other people that the flow gets better the most you use it. I have never used that kind of fude nib, so I guess it also takes some time to get the feeling of it. Many greetings!
Great videos Deborah. Hope to see you soon at a MoMa meeting. 👋 Petra
Many thanks Petra!! Yes, sure, we'll meet soon. Maybe this weekend at the USk meeting?
Have other dates...
Oh, that's a pity! Anyway, we'll meet soon again for sure :)
I have one small question, what ink are you using in your fountain pens....
Hola Ramón! I can recommend you the Sketch Ink from Rohrer and Klingner: www.rohrer-klingner.de/?page_id=1063&lang=en You can get them in several colors and they are specially designed for fountain pens. They are water-proof and work very well with watercolors, for example. I hope this helps you. Saludos!
Thanks again, Deborah! I shall miss my new teacher--wishing there were more!
Thanks for the message Louisa! Yes, I know! It is also sad for me to finish these videos with the wonderful Pat. It was like being with her in that class enjoying her teaching again. I got much more of it, being able to watch it again! I'm going to keep working in videos from the Symposium and I hope you find them also useful. Maybe you find another teacher you like :) Many greetings!
Great, Deborah! You were fortunate to get to this Symposium and I would love to see anything else you have filmed!
Thanks a lot Louisa! Maybe you would like to join us next year in Porto (Portugal) for the next Symposium. It is truly an amazing experience.
Oh! If only! But somehow can't see it happening. Thank you so much anyway.
Ooooh, that's a pity! But anyway don't lose hope, it took 3 years for me to go to my first Symposium. I followed them online. Maybe we'll meet in one of them in the future, finger crossed! I hope to keep seeing you around in the meantime.
Great videos...thanks! Question: do you spray your pages with a matte finish so that the colours don't rub against each other when there is a two page spread? Thanks
Hi Anne! Probably, Pat didn't see your comment as this isn't her channel but you can go ahead and ask her any question in Facebook. She is very nice and will answer any of your questions for sure. Anyway, I think she doesn't usually do it, for what I heard on the Symposium. Many greetings!
thank you for this video, it was great! Is there any more info on the Baggalini bag (style # ) and the washable pastels seen @ 14:24? thanks again!
Hi there, many thanks for your nice comment! I don't have more info on the Baggalini bag, sorry. The crayons seems to be "AMOS children's crayons / oil pastels rotating washable 12 color rotating crayons", but I'm not 100% certain. You can reach Pat in Facebook or other social media and ask her directly, she is always very kind and open to questions. Probably she didn't see your comment over here yet. Many greetings!
If you look to the sides of these shots you will see the extreme jerks the camera operator offers. Also, toooooo much use of zoom...zoom should be slow, subtle and not really noticed.
Greg. This series was Deborah's first go at videoing on location and she made then just for herself initially, as a reference for her own sketching. It was only in response to urban sketchers asking to see me sketching and teaching live that led her to share it on here. She is not a professional and did a sterling job, all things considered.
