  • I love those door pull straps on older cars despite them not being very well executed with a strange mixture of plastics, metals, caps and leather. They also have a tendency of becoming loose and eventually falling off if not maintained and reattached from time to time.
    Here is a short video on how I do it.

    I ordered the white plastic replacement retainers which hold on the gold door strap trim pieces. They’re much thicker than the originals and don’t work. They come in white or black. Any advice on replacing them?

    Thank you for the clear explanation, it's really hard to find good beige pull straps, the plastic on my lincoln is gone for all 4 doors I really wish a company to start produce them again in small quantities and even improve the design if possible.
    I bought many new cars 2021 but they all suck compared to the old mighty Town Car comfort, I simply can't let it go honestly... I'm willing to buy a new full interior for whatever price as long as they are newly made

    I would say it is more likely that people break the tabs when removing the end caps and then they won't stay on than them just falling off. Maybe a couple drops of Lock-Tite on the screw threads might help keep the screws from working their way back out so quickly. I would wait until you change out the strap if you plan to do that though.

      Thank you! That construction of plastic and metal is not the best. Keeping that strap for now until it breaks or starts ripping. I love those that have Cartier on them!

    Thank you. Very helpful. Question: Is it safe to unscrew the retaining screw completely (so that I can put a lock washer on the screw)? My fear is that a nut will fall down into the inside of the door.

    My '98 Mercury Grand Marquis has the best designed door pulls IMO. They are actually metal bars with in a rubberized textured surface. And they too are screwed into door panel plastic and a metal fastener on door frame. They are very sleek and stylish but not gaudy. They do not 'give' like the ones on a Town Car....so I do not have to tighten them as often. But doing so is ez. They each have two little rubber buttons that pop off with small flat screwdriver bit and give you access to Phillip's head screw. My 06 MGM has no straps for closing door. A fingers notch has been unceremoniously cut into the armrest if each door. You just put four fingers in armrest and pull door inwards toward the cabin and door closes. But most individuals have a tendency to pull up and in when closing the door causing the armrest to.separate and loosen from door panel. I wish Ford kept the old design. It worked well for so many years and seemed like a throw back to the days of my childhood. When that find something that works ...they always trash it and start over...ie, the panther platform. Lol

    • @VitaliyKofman
      @VitaliyKofman  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the comment! There are any number of ways of making a good sturdy door pull and it all starts from not using plastic backing on metal frame. All they could have done is just get rid of the plastic and make a metal on metal connection. If metal was too expensive and/or heavy, rubber could have been substituted. In any case, I'll just re-tighten it from time to time :)

    When people service things like the window motors they're not quite sure on how to remove these clips and they wind up breaking the tiny tabs that hold them in. Then they either lose them or throw them out and never replace them. This is why they're notoriously missing on the older Town Cars.
    They're basically a bad design and they used the same cheap plastic for things like the Moonroof switch, which also breaks very easily.

    • @VitaliyKofman
      @VitaliyKofman  Před 3 lety +1

      I was very careful with removing mine, but couldn't help to notice the bad design of having a plastic backing to where you have a metal screw that is very easy to over torque and break the plastic.

    With 3d printers out now someone should design a new backing tab for these cars. Mine are basically gone to from buying used but someone with 3d printing skills could make the back tabs easily.

    Yep, boy these pull straps are so poorly designed and attached. They got bad in my Limo Boss's cars and he had alot of overdone ugly fixes and modifications to deal with, and many missing cover clips...That little ugly stuff drives me crazy. The strap of the driver's door in my fresh '05 has already had some loosening issues in it's young life so far...I've been determined to keep up with it along the way so it doesn't get worse over time & more loosening of hardware...So far, adding an appropriate sized saw toothed lock-washer under each strap screw; has kept them tight for me since putting them in last year. So far so good, staying tight, but monitoring closely...I learned with my boss's cars the more you let them go, the bigger the war to keep them tight. Good idea to order spare covers, I'll be sure to make a point of that one of mine has an alignment/spacing issue that makes it look like it's always ready to pop off, but is staying in place so far...worried about losing it eventually though, so hadn't thought to actually get spares handy, thanks for the idea! My Uber Riders are frustrating me though: they keep not noticing the pull strap up top and instead keep grabbing the ashtray door & pulling on that...I'm worrying they will break the flip doors, so though I don't want to and like to keep everything 'original'; I may glue them shut, as does the reseller that sold me the car....I've already had a couple incidents of riders getting in, grabbing the ashtray, then the reminder cable ashtray pops out onto the ground, almost losing it.... frustrating issue. But overall, I like having the straps, just need to keep up with regular tightening, or like I did, add lock washers to improve the screw's ability to stay tight...Devil's they are!😆

    • @VitaliyKofman
      @VitaliyKofman  Před 3 lety +1

      I love those straps also since no current cars have them and I believe they add class and style. Design however is terrible and it's the whole plastic backing on the metal strap end that's causing the problem. 1. it's so easy to crack that backing it's not even funny + it sometimes cracks from age and temperature. Once it's cracked it will be loose and the more you tighten it - the worse it will get... Those end caps are also crap since you have metal try to hold on to the tiny plastic clips - WHO DOES THAT!? In any case, we have to love the good with the bad :)

      @@VitaliyKofman right on & I share your amazement on how poorly they r thought out & their flimsy design issues. But yeah, bad with the good, my complaint list is very short on these lovely beasts. But the door pull straps r sure @top of the list for a true ‘love/hate relationship’. 🤪🤣
