I don't like calling them "kid's games" because people have given that term such a bad connotation to make them seem like they're lesser.
"All ages" seems like a more suitable title. Not just to getnaway from the bad connotation but also they don't have to be explicitly made for kids. Astro Bot and Sly Cooper are suitable for children but doesn't mean they have to be exclusively made for them. These are not the Nick Jr of video games.

@@seanbroderick2224 I don't know, I feel like its ok to like things made for kids if you do it in a normal healthy way, I kind of feel that the erradication of the term "For kids" feeds more the fact that children nowadays want to grow too fast for feeling that being a kid or something being for kids is kind of diminishing to the eyes of society.

  • @krux02

As a father of a 6 year old, I can tell good kids game are hard to find, but we certainly don't need "more", there is actually enoguh. Good kids books are often more than 30 years old, good kids games are similar, they can in fact be very old, kids don't care how old the games are as long as they are fun and simple and don't ask you to read stuff.
Here is my personal recommendation with games that work very well with young kids:
    Little Inferno
    Super Mario Bros Wonder
    Streets of Rage 4
    Castle Crashers
The biggest problem might be that you try to play on PS5. Get a Steam Deck or Switch instead, much bigger library of kids friendly games.

    • @JulesM_
      @JulesM_ Před měsícem +8

I can totally understand that. While I'm neither a child nor a father, I really love lighthearted 3d platformer games, and XBOX or PS exclusives in this category are sooo hard to find... when my cousin gave me his old XBOX one, I was super hyped about the big catalog of games that I could now play with both Xbox & Switch !
Now, 3 years later, my switch is the only game console I play consistently, and when I use my Xbox, 90% of the time it's for DVDs or streaming.

    • @krux02
      @krux02 Před měsícem +8

@@JulesM_ Kids also don't care if games are exclusive or not. Try to value games on their gameplay experience on the hardware you have alone and not on if you could technically play them on another system as well. Apart from that, kids should not sit too long in front of the TV and play games. It's not good for them. After all they still need to learn how things feel and smell. Games don't cover that at all.

    • @Poefred
      @Poefred Před měsícem +2

@@krux02 Exclusivity is why the old classics were so high quality often times. There's a handful of excellent indie games for sure and that's not to be discounted. But owning a console back in the day had you excited for the big budget major hitters the creators of the console would put out. It drove competition and pushed for higher quality AND quantity back then. But now Sony's not willing to put any money into anything but the next realistic, gritty, cinematic focus tested slop. Kids absolutely have a lot to choose from still, Nintendo hasn't slowed down at all. But I do feel bad for a kid who's stuck with nothing but a PS5 ngl. And besides, personally it's about more than just kids having something to play, this is a legitimate industry direction issue that effects everyone but that's a bigger topic.

As someone who worked in a video game section of a department store, I would always use my gaming knowledge to help parents pick out games for their kids, and while this changed in the last few years, there were many, many times when a bewildered parent would come to me trying to find a good E-rated game when their kid's only console was a PlayStation 4 or 5. I'm super thankful for Crash, Spyro and Sonic, but the defeated look so many got when I had to explain to them that Mario, Kirby and Pokemon are Nintendo only.
It's weird, because I think characters like Ratchet, Parappa or the Pipposaru (Ape Escape monkeys) have that same mass market appeal, potentially, but Sony just doesn't care.
But there's been a massive change in leadership lately, Sony's participating in Tokyo Game Show for the first time in half a decade, a bunch of classic games are coming back with rereleases on PS4/5, so I'm hopeful for a better Sony future

Today if you’re making a game that isn’t on phones it makes more sense to be T rated. This video is good but like so many it misses understands why Sony’s platformers have been put aside.
It’s because the developers moved on. R&C is still around because Insomniac wanted to keep making them.
Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, And Media Molecule all decided to do different things. And as a result Jack, Sly and LBP have been set aside. This isn’t even exclusive to those series as Killzone, Infamous and Resistance have also been put aside despite their success during the 7th gen.
Sony even tried to get other developers to make new games, but Sly 4 and LBP 3 didn’t live up to the originals. And considering Microsoft’s attempts to keep Halo going after Bungie left. It was easier to let the developers make what the want instead of keeping a series alive that the developers weren’t interested in.

I think there is a detriment for Sony not having kid-friendly games that wasn’t addressed here: the long term picture.
Nintendo has a strategy which doesn’t just think in the present, but generations ahead. They keep putting out the Mario’s and Kirby’s specifically because always having games that kids specifically can play means that when the kid grows up and becomes an adult, they either will buy a Nintendo for their own kid, or use their disposable income to buy something for that same IP they remember fondly as a kid. The generation of kids who grew up with Sony games (myself included) are now adults, and while some of us still have the PlayStations, there isn’t many games that we can hand off to the kids. Sure, we might continue to buy Sony for a while, but when we age out of the video game demographic entirely, then the kids who had nothing to play on the Sony console might overlook it as an option when they become adults with their own money. If games I loved playing as a kid like Spyro and Crash were still around to buy, I would love to get them for myself and for kids, but as it stands the Mario and Kirbies are the things that are around, so in the future, assuming nothing happens to the IPs, those are the ones with staying power.

Nintendo and Pokemon has the most sustainable business model. Going lower-tech and lower-spec was the smart play. Nintendo is one of the only companies that realizes they make video games... not "technology". GAMES. Sony has completely lost this perspective, and I'm not sure that Microsoft ever had this perspective.
Nintendo is the last REAL game maker around that happens to also make consoles.
I think Nintendo has seen this coming for a long time. With age comes experience, and this company has seen many adversaries rise and fall. Nintendo saw their competitors promising better and better production to the point where there is no return on investment and only their frail fundamental IP to justify hardware. Now the third parties are fleeing and afraid of partnering.
Nintendo have been playing the long game and it has paid off in spades.
When we say Nintendo consoles and games are inseparable we mean it literally since the devs make both the console and games at the same time together simultaneously
Nintendo thrives in limitations it allows for more creativity
Sometimes too much freedom means no direction
But within a limitation you can challenge yourself how to be flexible within it like a fun puzzle you experiment with
PEOPLE NEED TO STOP GIVING A DAMN ABOUT GRAPHICS
IF YOU WANT GOOD GRAPHICS WITH REALISTIC TEXTURES GO OUTSIDE AND HUG A TREE
NINTENDO WAS SMART AND REALIZED WHAT EVERYONE ELSE
    IS TOO SLOW TO
Nintendo realised long ago that competing in graphics is pointless. No matter how powerful your console is, in a couple of years it is going to be obsolete, and anybody who really cares about graphics is going to buy a PC, because that is where the best graphics are.
Instead, Nintendo focuses on their strengths:
    * Nintendo likes hardware gimmicks, because it makes their console stand out. Nobody bought a Wii because it had the prettiest graphics, they bought a Wii because they wanted to play with the motion controls (An idea so good both the “superior” PS3 and Xbox 360 tried to copy it). The same thing is happening with the Switch: people are buying it because they can play their games anywhere, and can move between a handheld and a home console. They like to focus on giving customers something that they cannot get anywhere else.
    * When Nintendo did try to compete on power, they didn’t do very well. The N64 and Gamecube were the most powerful consoles of their generations, but were both massively outsold by the “inferior” PS1 and PS2. The Wii was the weakest of its generation, but outsold the PS3 and Xbox 360. This proves Nintendo’s approach to console design clearly has something going for it.
    * Performance is expensive. Performance is even more expensive when you are using it in niche applications. If Nintendo wanted to have something as powerful as an Xbox One or PS4, while still being portable, then it would probably cost twice as much. This means that Nintendo would have to charge more for the console (probably not something the market could sustain) and/or eat a hefty loss on each console sold. Instead, by not focusing on performance, Nintendo make a profit on each console, and keep it at a price point where more people can afford it.
    * One of Nintendo’s biggest strengths is their first party titles, all of which rely on stylised graphics and strong art-style. It doesn’t matter that the console is not very powerful when Pokémon, Zelda, Mario (and its millions of spin offs), Smash Bros, Metroid and Donkey Kong are incredibly popular and all don’t care about high end graphics. Why make your console more expensive to make and develop for when you don’t even need it?
    * The companies that tend to focus on graphics are third party developers, such as EA, Activision, and Rockstar. If the console sells well (like the Switch currently is), then those developers will find a way to bring their games to it or, failing that, make unique games that work best on the hardware.
    * By not competing with the other consoles, or PCs, in terms of power, while offering unique gaming experiences, Nintendo has comfortably found a niche as an optional second system. If you have a PC, PS4 or Xbox One you have very little reason to buy one of the others, because they are all basically the same. Nintendo’s consoles offer things that none of the others offer, and thus can easily tempt people with another gaming device into purchasing it.
    * Nintendo has also found a strong market in all ages These people don’t care about graphics, so why waste money on giving them something that they don’t want? An families don’t care that the Switch doesn’t have the best looking games, they’re just happy that they can have fun
Ever since the Wii era Nintendo has. Been trying to train us that power doesn’t matter
Whimsy and imagination and creativity and memorable experiences are more important to them
And y’all still aren’t getting it
    Move on from Power
    it don’t matter
    Nintendo doesn’t want it
    They think it’s boring
    They don’t care
Official quote from iwata: "Even when we were going to launch the Wii system, there were a lot of voice saying 'Nintendo should stop making hardware'," Iwata recalled, talking to Gamasutra.
"The reasoning behind that was Nintendo would not have any chance against Microsoft and Sony. The fact of the matter was: I did not think Nintendo should compete against these companies with the same message and same entertainment options for people.
"We have not changed our strategy," he added. "In other words, we just do not care what kind of 'more beef' console Microsoft and Sony might produce in 2013. Our focus is on how we can make our new console different than [others]."
The switch is faithful to iwata’s legacy

I think a big reason we've seen this shift away from kid freindly games is that kids just aren't the main demographic of video games anymore. Young adults are now the largest group of people buying games and the market shifted to accommodate that audience. Also with how expensive games are nowadays I undertand why parents wouldn't like to spend 70 dollars on a game for their kids, especially those that don't have the brand power of Mario or Pokemon.

I really wished we got Vib Ribbon back at some point, remaster or sequel. Also as a kid who was half raised on the PlayStation 3 and half raised on the shovelware empire that is the Wii, I would preferr the Wii! At least the Wii has kids games and games of all ages to play and enjoy while there is kids PS3 games, most of my memories are tearing through Springfield in Simpsons Hit n Run or playing LBP 2 and watching videos relating to it like music videos. I even have memories of renting Sonic Generations once it hit my Library and getting stuck on Angel Island or experiencing Portal for the first time!
But the Wii is where I enjoyed my time with video games, from shovelware like Ultimate I Spy or Sonic and Mario at the London games or Just Dance and even just using the CZcams and Netflix channels to watch stuff, my 3DS is how I got into anime ! The lack of cartoony or out right kids games that isnt just slop or very money hungry today sadden me as I don't play most of the hyper realistic games and want fun brain turning off games like the Lego Games !!

Nintendo are the only ones who understand that low budget titles need to exist so your console actually has games. Sony is always chasing the next beg cinematic experience they fail to realize that they’re just sitting on potential big bucks from dormant series. If Sony would make a third Parapa, a new Sly Cooper, and maybe even something new, the PS5’s reputation wouldn’t be in the gutter. All this applies to Microsoft as well.

I just saw a video talking about the weird atrophy that the internet has faced in websites and entertainment geared towards kids. A lot of it has become centralized on CZcams and Social Media as a whole, which has awesome stuff for kids, but has to share the space with adult content, as opposed to be being spread out across different easily accessible niches. It’s kind of like if every Chuck E. Cheese in the world was closed or replaced with Dave & Busters, where kids can enjoy themselves, but not have it to themselves. Kids can enjoy stuff geared towards older audiences, but they need their own spaces just for themselves, with their own experiences just for themselves.
I saw this video as a sort of continuation of that conversation.

The only console kids games that I can think of from 2010-2014 would be Puppeteer, Knack, LBP 2-3, LBP Karting, Mario 3D World, DK Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Windwaker HD and a few ratchet games. The issue is that LBP, ratchet and knack releases were questionable at this time and the Wii U releases went under the radar because nobody had a Wii U.

Gaming went through this weird period where it wanted so badly to be taken seriously as an artform, and as a result it marketed towards teens and adults a lot heavier. It's just following the film industry, because that problem also exists there. When was the last time a G or PG movie had a genuine chance at Best Picture? Kid's content is shunned or written off as lower quality and not worth any adult's time. But people don't seem to realize that enjoying things made for kids is not only a totally normal thing to do, but also very healthy. C.S. Lewis made a very poignant remark about this phenomenon: "When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

I'm definitely buying Astro Bot as soon as possible when it comes out, not only because the gameplay looks fun, but it also references Ape Escape, which is my favorite PlayStation franchise ever. The last main numbered game was on PS2, I'll take anything at this point.
To be honest, Astro Bot seems too cute and wholesome for me. It feels like it's trying to make you go, "D'aaww! It's so adowabow!" I like rated E-E10+ cartoony video game characters with a bit of an edge to them. Crash Bandicoot has a lot of fun cartoon violence, the Pipo Monkeys from Ape Escape were mischievous, and some had freaking guns and rocket launchers. Despite the Jak sequels and the Ratchet & Clank series being rated T back in the PS2 days, I'll count them as kids games since I'm assuming most fans who played their games back then weren't even 13 yet. I sure as heck wasn't. Even the original Jak and Daxter has more crunch to it than Astro Bot.

In my opinion, they are missing a market here that brings a lot of money and shame, and also an opportunity to attract audiences of all ages

Kids games are also vital in growing your next generation of players. If you abandon that market to Nintendo, while some will migrate over after they mature, some will probably stay with Nintendo, or some may choose xbox. But if you get them into the Sony ecosystem earlier, chances are they will stay. After all, this is microsofts biggest regret in losing the PS4 generation. That was the gen where there was more digital purchasing. And since those purchases carried over via backwards compatibility, people on PS4 mostly stayed on Playstation for the 5 era.

This is actually a big problem that it really annoys me for the last decade and yeah, it is the: "Where is the first-party kids games in Sony and Microsoft consoles?", nowdays they offer just "realistic" games on the market and by realistic I mean: sad, depressive, reflective, inclusive, political, etc..., heck where it went the typical games of fantasy, adventure and dumb but charming stories?.
Sure there are the Nintendo and indie games for that but the thing is that you can't rely everything on them, not everyone could like the Nintendo's IP and with the indie games the big majority get stuck on PC or mobile only since nowdays port games to consoles it's pretty much hard due to either money/budget, the annoy process to get a developer kit tool, incompatibility game's engines, performance issues, etc...
Really miss the old era, the PS3 one was probably the last one that I loved and yes, despite that it was focused on Teen and Mature games since all the kids/family friendly games it went to the PSP, still it got some nice games and potential franchises that came and went like ModNation Racers, The Puppeteer, Blue Toad Murder Files, the Move games like Wonderbook, Start the Party!, Sports Champions, etc..., not counting also that was the last console that some franchises got their last entry (or proper sequel) like Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, Buzz, etc...
It was since the PS4 era that everything went to downhill and now Sony is paying the consequences with the PS5, I mean now they have to rely on their PS Classics re-releases to keep the console relevant.

Gaining 50 subscribers in 2 days is more than deserved, the editing is genuinely something you'd see from a channel with like 800,000 subscribers, and yeah, I totally agree with everything you've said in this video. Also prepare for autism because I'm gonna correct you thoroughly about something you barely mentioned:
10:45 The loading times for LBP3 Ps4 were just about as bad as on Ps3, although the Ps5 -does- did load levels lightning-fast, but with the online gone, you can't really use that. Also, LBP3's online service lasted a little less than 9.5 years, which really isn't that bad, especially considering they were operating on the original 2008 servers, for that signature connectivity between games. But when both the Ps3 and Ps4 servers were up for LBP3, the Ps3 version was honestly the better one, because while it was downgraded graphically, it didn't have the profile corruption bug that the Ps4 version of the game did, where you'd lose all your saved data sometimes, just because the game felt like it. Overall, LBP3 had alot of glitches like that, and even after all the bug fixes there were still so many issues, and that's really what gave the game such a sour taste in the eyes of fans. Ontop of all that, I also feel it worth mentioning that LBP3 and Sackboy weren't made by Media Molecule, rather Sumo Digital, who did alot of the modern Sonic racing games and, uh... Snake Pass. And just in case anyone reading this does what 90% of the fans did when seeing that Sumo were behind the LBP game that basically killed the franchise, I'm gonna prematurely jump in, and say that it totally wasn't their fault. The devs at Sumo had never made a full LBP game before, rather only a few DLC packs, and a cancelled remaster(?) called LBP: Hub, which actually was in development until late 2013, which actually means that Sumo Digital had about 1 year to make LBP3, so I'd say it's pretty understandable how the game ended up with so many bugs and cut content.
I told you to prepare for autism, if you read that and were surprised by the rant, it's your fault.

When writing this I tried mostly writing from my experience, and had no idea the loading screen were bad across all plats :0 (my original point for the "oh no it's over" bit was going to be that you needed to pay for PS Plus to play the online levels, but while researching I found out that was never true, and my dumb ass wasted years I could've been playing LBP3 on a ps4 :'(

People don’t realise that without kids games, no new kids/future customers can be introduced to video games, without future customers to be introduced, they won’t be able to sell more games and consoles in the long run, and without sales the companies will go bankrupt, so it’s safe to say that kids games are more important than you think

Y'know, Astro Bot started in THE PLAYROOM VR too, y'know, also Sumo Digital made LBP3, not MM, they went to make Tearaway Unfolded. Plus not to mention that I wouldn't really consider Spider-Man as a game for kids as it has a T for Teen rating

I actually think Knack should be given a second chance. It is a fun co-op beatem-up with more in common with God of war than platformers. The gimmick of changing size is really fun for solving puzzles and having more reach with your punches. Nothing beast one shoting an enemy that gave you trouble early on in the level due to you being bigger.

Indie games have filled this void mostly. There are tons of platformers that live up to the legacy of the platformers of old.

I really don’t like the term “kids” or “children’s” games, but some companies seem to really dig it. This has frequently been a problem with Sega; ever since the 7th generation of gaming onwards, their only “AAA” franchise has been the M-rated Yakuza series, and their Monkey Ball games became infantilized. The following generation, Sonic was also infantilized. Sonic has only just begun to recover from a decade of it

@@TheJohnChairs They are *very* good, yes. I just finished Kiwami and am on Kiwami 2. Incredible so far.
Though, I’m baffled that a company as prestigious as Sega, with the second-largest IP catalogue in the entire gaming industry beaten only by Nintendo, has repeatedly fumbled Sonic/Monkey Ball and left the vast majority of their other IPs abandoned over the past 15 years

That's why I prefer nintendo. I wouldn't call them "kids games". I'd just call them mascot games. I never got into those sports games, live service games, or rpgs. Platforming is my favorite genre of gaming and the only rpgs I've played were the pokemon games. I've played horror games and fighting games though. I'm more of a casual gamer.

Try at least Kingdom Hearts then
It's not just an rpg, it's an action rpg
And the gameplay of mainline games is very, very fun
Sadly, Switch only has cloud version...
But Steam versions released recently, so...

I personally don't like to call them kid games because it's such a boomer term, but there is a reason why some games are rated E for EVERYONE. That's what I wish more gaming companies that aren't SEGA or Nintendo would do and Astro Bot has to prove that. That way we have more Crash, Parappa, APE ESCAPE, and other more experimental titles. I also don't like how games are trying to be movie experiences and western games need to detach themselves from that mentality and just make games...well games.
Also make more videos please. This was awesome to watch!
