As a business major, I can’t help but LOVE the GENIUS in the Toyota logo. Absolutely brilliant!!
Impossible to buy a Toyota, there is a vehicle shortage and their already high price is now insanity.
$35 grand for a 4Runner with 50k miles.
I started watching Scotty's videos a long time ago when I was 16. When I first started watching, I would laugh at how much Scotty pushes Toyota reliability. I was one of those people who aspired to eventually own a fancy BMW or Mercedes. After learning from a few car mistakes, I now realize that Scotty was 110% spot on the entire time. I currently have an Accord, which has been a great car, but my wife's Toyota Camry is absolutely amazing. I will probably be brand loyal to Toyota for the rest of my life now!

Toyota Supra is a BMW with a Toyota body kit. The engine and drive train is manufactured by BMW.
My grandfather bought a Toyota Picnic when I was born, and it still had no major problems when I turned 15. The only minor problems were caused by lack of maintenance, and he sold it because he didn't want to pay the car pack fee :(

I bought a What I guess you would call a Tacoma before Toyota named their trucks in 1995 it was a king cab with a 22re engine and a 5 speed transmission I sold it for $4000 dollars in 2018 with over 300k on it and I had done nothing but maintenance oh and a starter best truck I ever had now I live in the Philippines and own a Toyota Vios a great little car love it
Wow thats Great ! I worked for Toyota Manufacturing Australia for 38.5 Years until we closed in 2017 , worked as Operations Manager of Powertrain. Have personally met Eiji Toyoda and presented to Akio Toyoda whilst I was there. Toyota is a fantastic company to work for. High customer focus, Safety and quality. The workers are their main asset. Great place. Visited Japan, Thailand and America plants also in my time.

I am blown away at the progress Scotty has made in the quality of his videos lately. He went from some guy in his garage yelling biased opinions about automobile technology to these history channel level documentaries that are full of information and high-level production. Just blows my mind!

Good marketing and legal strategy toyota holds a retainer with all.tje largest law.firms to prevent successful consumer lawsuit for damages due to all they're known safety defects including ones that haven't been exposed to light yet
Having said that the other cheap ness and relative simplicity of the vehicles combined with peppy program ming and high priority on visual impression makes selling the cars easy

Scotty has an undergraduate and and graduate degree, was working on his PhD then switched to auto mechanic.
After owning different brands, my experience taught me that Toyota is the way to go. They are by far the best built and most reliable cars I've owned.

Had three toyotas and gone back to opels. Every car has it own problems, but atleast i dont need to be towed anymore.
Life is short and you cant take money or your car to the grave. Toyotas are usually lacking the fun factor. I've never kept a car more than a decade and usually sell them running as good as I got them. If you kept every car for 10 years, thats only 6 or 7 cars in most peoples lifetimes. Maybe thats acceptable for some but I want to drive more than that!

This was incredible. My Grandpa always told me there are a lot of great vehicles out there...but there is only 1 Toyota. If you want to keep a vehicle not for years but Decades it's a Toyota. Bought a 2010 Camry brand new and owned it for 10 years and 73k miles. The only thing I had to do was oil changes, a set of tires, and windshield wipers. The car was basically in perfect condition still barely broke in at 73k when I sold it to upgrade to a Tundra. I will only own Toyota period!
I bought a brand new 2010 Avalon Limited and it was in the shop at least 6 times. Pull to the right took 3 times to fix. (I finally told the mechanic where to look.) Caliper was hanging. Left headlight fogged up. They replaced both. Rear windshield kept fogging up. Bad seal but Toyota replace the entire window. Finally traded it in with 4K miles on it. Current Sienna Limited I've had 5 years. Has had many expensive repairs. Anyone who tells me Toyota's never break down or need repair is full of it. Many brands of cars out there that are trouble free if taken care of when new. A friend bought a Hyundai Tucson. She drove it almost 10 years without one repair. She bought another one brand new. I think the Camry and the Tacoma are the best vehicles Toyota makes. The rest are a roll of the dice.
I think that specied car must have a curse or smh my frnd owns a 17year old fielder with 200k + miles still running good needed some repairs but toyota lives up to its name

I work at a Japanese run company here in my country. "Kaizen" is a pretty big deal for the whole company. As the company highly values incremental improvement in every aspects of the company.
As a employee who builds them everyday, this is very in depth. They really have such a rich history. Coolest fact I learned while in assimilation, the Lexus grill is not a hour glass it’s a spindle that thread comes on. A throwback to the early days of loom production.

I drove my tacoma from San Diego CA, to Yosemite National Park, then to Mt shasta CA then to San Francisco and back to San Diego through all kinds of terrain with the ac blowing Ice cold. Not one issue or a single sound or problem. Its the most realiable vehicle ive ever used. Im never switching teams.

Amazing video Scotty. I'm going to share this amongst my peers and those who teach engineering history in college. Back when I attended mechanical engineering school we saw a breakdown of Toyota's history and the tools they left behind for production operations like Kanban, 5-Why root cause, Kaizen and so on. Your insight, knowledge and illustration are far superior to what I received as a student.

Scotty you took it out of the park with this documentary. Entertaining and fun to watch. I feel like I have learned more from these video than many online classes during quarantine time. I hope there are many more videos to come full of knowledge. My whole family is a Toyota family 4Runner(1999) bought new and we still have it with 234,000 miles (mom's). 2004 4runner with 149,000 miles.( Dad's). Camry SE (2009-2014 totaled loss in car accident😢 but it gave life to a 2014 Highlander LE with 82,000 ( Mine) wife drives a 2015 Corolla S with 56,000 miles super gas saver and recently my brother and I bought our mom the 2020 4 Runner in december 2019 she loves it and takes care of it so much like a jewl only has 5,000 miles.. is the weekend car.

Wow, this documentary isn’t just history,. It introduced Project Management methodologies, and problem management technique, the 5 why, KANBAN and EKANBAN. What a fun video.
Not to mention kaizen and just-in-time (although not specific). Toyotism has been a huge inspiration on other industries.
Thank You Scotty, great job on the explanation of TOYOTA's history. I used to work on Toyota's back in the late 1970 when you only needed a a screwdriver and 10 mm Open/Ring wrench. Simple cars like the Morris cars from GB. Love your clips. To date I am a Toyota believer, Camry and now to a Highlander. Mano.

Do it! Love my Camry, and the one before that. Wife's next car will be a Toyota of some sort. They just get it. Styling is kinda boring sometimes, but they work. At my age I give a damn about fancy cars, I just see them as money out of my bank account.

Since my first 1985 Corolla, my immediate family has driven 2 more Corollas, 3 Camrys an ES350, a RX350 and I still use my 2000 Tacoma with 180K miles for a reliable hunting truck. We’ve never had a single problem. Proper maintenance is the key.
I find it fascinating that people that still hunt know how to write.

Since I was a little kid, my family owned many different Toyota models ranging from Corollas, Pickups, 4Runners and even a light blue Previa in the mid 90’s 😄 That brand loyalty definitely rubbed off onto me.. I drive the hand-me-down 2003 4Runner that has racked up almost 300k on the clock and recently, just purchased a 2010 Camry LE with the 2.5 I4 for my significant other. Both of my babies far exceed what they’re designed to do and are such well put together automotive marvels! They seriously put a smile on my face every time I climb behind the wheel.

I don't know why these stories have me choked up the whole time I'm watching. Am I the only one who this happens to? I just love a story of someone who wouldn't give up or take no for an answer. I was told no by the Army recruiter after a year of working hard on getting in. I didn't accept him telling me no. We went into that recruiting office (99.9% of other's would've accepted their "fate" of the "no" received by the recruiter) and spoke to his boss. He seen the determination, crossed a few T's, dotted a few I's and I was on an airplane to basic training the following week. Don't you ever give up on your dreams! Don't EVER take no for an answer when you are determined to accomplish something! I left the military and didn't stop. I own a moving and hauling company. I've inspired my fiance to the point of her getting her real estate license. Once upon a time I wanted to be a millionaire, now I'm shooting for billions 💯. It's not impossible folks. It's only impossible if you believe it is.

I felt like a traitor to the American auto industry when I bought my first Toyota in 1990 which was a four wheel drive pickup; I went on to buy a 1995 4Runner. Prior to buying Toyota's I have purchased Ford and Chevy, Dodge and Jeep vehicles and was never happy with them as they proved unreliable.
Contrary to the Toyota's which I still own today and still run great, in fact the 4Runner is my daily driver with almost a half million miles on it with never ever failing to start or run. My only mechanical expenses have been for expected routine replacements of tires, belts, hoses, wipers, filters and of course regular oil and lube service. I have NEVER regretted buying Toyota and will certainly do so again in the future.
And who could blame me; I have a 25 and 30 years old vehicles that have always done their job and done them well........

Great presentation. You missed Poka-yoke and Yokoten. I was task to apply Kaizen to my department. The pizza example was called Value Stream Mapping. I had to follow a worker all day and record the amount they had to travel to get their job done and plot it on a map of the companies floorplan. I had to come up with a way to minimize their travel. Pretty much put tools right where the worker needed them so they didn't have to go get them. As pointed out somewhat in your presentation Visuality is important. I had to put these tools on a tool so that anyone could see a tool was in use or missing. Nothing hidden in a toolbox. Had to walk through the shop every morning before a shift to make sure every tool was on these boards. All because of Toyota's success of building the finest automobiles LoL You did touch on JIT (Just In Time) inventory reduction. Receiving a part exactly when needed.

I learned how to work on cars when my father coached me through an engine and transmission change and brakes by working solo on a Toyota Crown Deluxe in the late 60s. The car had been driven by its original owner, without oil. I found the car wonderfully and carefully made. The inside and the body was, cherry. These were great cars.
It was so interesting and involving, that the time spent on watching it seem to be just a moment, loved it.

@@merc-ni7hy to be honest Toyota in Mississippi does a great job with safety. When anything happens they have counter measures to counter act the problem and the 5 whys (which i hate doing the paper work for) to solve the problem. I have never seen anything like what you are saying where i work. Not saying it didnt happen, but its 100% not like that in Mississippi.
I used to live near a Toyota plant in Cambridge, Ontario. It was opened in the late 80s and i remember the buzz when it came to town. Word from the workers was that they (the Japanese managers that oversaw the plant) were strict but not unfair. They were serious about quality. If you didn't care they didn't need you. Nothing wrong with that at all. They paid very well ($20 an hour in 1992 for a line worker) but they wanted people who cared and were serious about delivering quality.
Today that plant is extremely successful and has expanded twice. It builds quality cars every day.
@@KyprosEc i agree with that 100%! I came to Toyota from Mercedes and the Japanese treat people with a lot more respect. Its really about if you want to be there to work, come work for us, if you dont want to work leave. Toyota only fires people for attendance (and thats a very long process of many unexcused absentees, which also with in that has many processes before your fired) and violence in the work place. You have to be a really bad person to get fired here.

I love the F150s I grew up in a hardcore ford family but man did I tell ya once my old ford hit 180k miles it started to freak me out when it would cut off after starting it. Kept maintained up to date and always making sure I get it what it needs until it eventually became too risky to continue to own. Back in 2010 I bought my first Tacoma and it’s still kicking and never one issue… my pops tell me it should last well over 300-400k miles

Scotty, I have been a fan of yours for about 5 years. You always give great advice and explain concepts so that even a grade schooler can follow and learn so important facts. I found this documentary on the origins and rise of Toyota fantastic and very educating. I have been repairing and driving since I was 18 yrs old, now I'm 72. Not at your level of expertise but I have always been able (with the help of great teachers like yourself) to keep and maintain what I drive. Keep up the tremendous and very helpful ideas and tips. My wife has a 2003 Toyota Celica (not the GT) and only had the clutch replaced in over 120,000 miles. Just regular maintenance and garage kept since day one. It looks like it just rolled off of the showroom floor. She is 67 and insists she will keep driving and shifting her mid-life crisis baby until she can't climb in and out of it anymore. I had a 2010 Prius, which I loved to death but swapped it for a 2017 Subaru Forester, whic I also love, but really miss the Prius.
Great film, Scotty, thoroughly enjoyed it. Such a great company. I was at Le Mans in 2016 when their car broke down on the final lap. Akio was absolutely distraught. But what happened in 2018 is history. GR dominance !

I only buy Toyota vehicles as well, I started my contracting business in 2001, my 1993 Toyota 4wd 22-re truck always worked, never broke down I put 307,000 trouble free miles before I eventually sold it ( I’m buying it back soon). There were times if my truck broke down, I wasn’t paying bills or eating, it was always reliable. My 4 runner has 245,000 miles, Toyota is the best vehicle on the planet.

This was very interesting. I stopped buying American made cars in the 90's and bought my first corolla in 97..I traded that one in in 2008 for a 2009 corolla which I currently drive. I love them. They aren't flashy or speedy...they are dependable just like me :)

I’ve been watching you for a few years and just traded in my Jeep Grand Cherokee for a 2020 RAV4 xSE Hybrid.
My Jeep CJ7 has a Toyota B diesel engine. Stronger and more efficient and economical than the old gas guzzling engine.(Big advantage is the availability of spare parts almost anywhere) I call it ToyoJeep.

Great job on this one! Very informative. Scotty, I'm so disappointed in myself...I sold my 2001 Avalon about 2 months ago:) It was in great condition inside and out, standing and watching the engine running with the hood up...it sounded like a quiet sewing machine, steady as can be, with a smooth perfect trans to match that engine. My plan was to buy a used newer one but with the way things just went with the car market...that may not be so "cut and dry". Ugh!
@@sgvincent100 Ha, I can only wish. That was the plan, to find a newer Avalon...or Camry. Not been good pickings at all. I have a leased vehicle until Sept 2022. I shudder to think I might need to buy out the 2020 chevy I'm leasing before finding a decent deal on another used car. What I'm in will be 3 yrs old in Sept and has 20,000 miles on it and pretty much loaded less a moon roof. I still say Ugh! Will see how it goes by summer?
