I would like to thank you for your comments, questions, and overall contributions to discussing the African-Americans who settled in Samana in Hispaniola in 1824-1825. This space is to exchange ideas and interact with each other by refraining ourselves from using profane or offensive or racist, or disrespectful language. There is room for disagreement, even if we don't perhaps like it. By posting on this space, you are contributing to a rewarding conversation about our collective history. Please remember that the purpose of this documentary is to raise much-needed awareness about the historical ties we share. Learning about our common racial history helps us build trust, respect, tolerance, and understanding, which are essential cornerstones for peaceful, orderly, and happier communities. On behalf of the Institute for Latino Studies and the Common Roots Projects, I thank you again and encourage you to continue contributing with your comments, questions, ideas, analyses, etc. You are all welcome!
Sincerely,
Néstor Montilla, Ph.D.

Soy oriundo de la ciudad de Filadelfia, y la primera a la que fui y mi esposa fue a la ciudad de Samaná, it was truly an eye opener, it reminded me of my parents, my dad from Mississippi, and mother from south Carolina, the religion, the music, worship, foods, this was is every Sunday morning.
These people know their history, which is more than I can say for most
well, is true, I'm one of them. the slaves meant to go back to Africa but on the way there they stumble upon DR and made it their home. I remember talking to my grandfather before he passed away and I asked him, grampa how come your English is so good, he told me, my grampa was from Philadelphia I almost fell, never imagine that was so.
But the real history is that AA were brought to DR while Haiti was ruling the Dominican side of the island just after slavery ended in the US.
They was given free land but some of them found their way back to the US.
Yes I have been many times to Samana and can attest they still have American names and very few can speak English.
I would love to talk with you
@@juanrojas3616 This is true, it was the first Haitian president that invited them

@@juanrojas3616 you are right that the Haitians were ruling RD when the AA arrived, but note slavery ended in the United States in 1865 and the majority of free AA came to the island in 1822
wow, I'm from Samana, my last name is Paul, now I go by "Pool" because Paol, was pronounced "pol" and so they wrote it as it sounded and now I'm pool. and it is interesting how, they know this story so well. I live in the united states now fro more than 25 years, and is something that i know from history here, but never learned when I was in samana.
I have distant family members named Poole. I have some old documents with the Poole name on it that I collected while completing my family history album.... (which i still nit completed btw lol) I'm descendent of the Johnson family.
I learn that not to long ago
Proud of been one of them, samaná i carry you in my heart from pennsylvania, usa. Sirett Green!
This lady is beautiful, she smiles with her eyes when she speaks our history.
Fascinating story....!!!!
Loved it. I felt a strong closeness or connection to these people but yet I am predominant of European descendant. I understood their struggles and plight. Anyone who is able to preserve their culture and identity after all these years is worthy of admiration, praise and recognition. God truly did bless them.
Their were many settlements that descended from the Philadelphia area. It is part of Philadelphia history that most do not know. Instead of trying to dispute these people, people should investigate and see for themselves. Most colonized blacks dont even know their history, so give them their credit and they have no reason to lie. Bishop Richard Allen was a Freemason and very prominent in the city of Philadelphia. This is real documented history, all it takes is to investigate. This is well documented in Philadelphia history.

The information is not nothing but propaganda.all you have to do is Google AA migration to Haiti. it was the Haitian president Jean Pierre Boyer good Samaritan, he had the whole island under his control in 1821 to 1848, he was the one who gave AA that island call samana, and also in Haiti on the north side
I am so proud of my town and culture. I am proud to be one of their descendants. I am mix because from my father side I have the Spanish heritage. My grandmother always spoke English to her siblings in front of us.
I'm African American the crazy thing is most AAs don't know this history nor the history about us settling in Trinidad (Merikens) and the Bahamas. This history has just become more known in the last 5 years. I was still shocked about us settling in Nova Scotia in Canada and then found out we went to caribbean islands as well.

This could make you question your own family history sometimes. Especially if it's mixed race in the family are Dominicans as well. paul friserthe Northeamerican did not want African free slaves in the territory and offered them $40 dollars and a mule to create their own government; it started when the French militarymen on the side of La Española Island killed their French superiors and every Spanials on their way to Santo Domingo, the capital, because they were afraid the same thing would happened it to them.
