CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Melvin (Jack Nicholson) makes an offhand joke about her son's illness, which deeply offends Carol (Helen Hunt).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
James L. Brooks (Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News) directed this $50 million-plus romantic comedy, set in Manhattan. Dysfunctional, acid-tongued romance novelist Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson), who suffers from an obsessive-compulsive disorder, takes pride in his ability to offend. At a nearby cafe, the only waitress willing to stand up to his sarcastic tirades is Carol Connelly (Helen Hunt), a single mother struggling to raise her chronically asthmatic son. In Melvin's West Village apartment building, talented contemporary artist Simon Nye (Greg Kinnear) lives across the hall from Melvin. Simon is the current darling of the New York art world, reason enough to draw Melvin's verbal fire, but Simon's gay lifestyle is further grist for the novelist's malicious mill. These three New Yorkers, none of whom appears to have a chance in hell at finding true happiness, discover their fates intertwined because of the fourth complicated character in the piece, Verdell, a tiny Brussels Griffon dog (played by newcomer Jill, after a 15-week training program). Melvin seems to have no friends or family, and he lives alone, working on his 62nd book. When Simon goes into the hospital after a brutal mugging, Melvin has to take care of Verdell, and the dog actually warms Melvin's cold heart -- to the degree that he sets up unsolicited medical care for Carol's son. Eventually, Melvin is cornered into driving Simon and Carol to Baltimore, and during a hotel stopover, Melvin confesses to Carol, "You make me want to be a better man." The trip becomes an odyssey of self-realization for all three. Locations included Brooklyn's Prospect Park (Carol's neighborhood) and Greenwich Village (where Melvin's building is on 12th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues). Other exteriors were shot in downtown Los Angeles, where a dilapidated transient hotel at the corner of 4th Street and Main was transformed into the chic cafe where Carol works. Sets for the Simon/Melvin apartment interiors were erected on a soundstage at the Sony Pictures lot. Simon's paintings were created for the film by New York artist Billy Sullivan, whose work is part of the modern art collection at NYC's Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

@@pedrobakale7180 at 0:55 he realized what he just did
Yep. You do not EVER say that to a parent of a child dealing with a serious illness.

The casting of this film is Phenomenal
One oscar for both of them!
@@FailTeacher And the other was nominatted to
The writing is phenomenal.
Brilliant acting from both Hunt and Nicholson !
And this is why they both took home the best actress and actor Oscar awards for this gem of a movie. Absolute class acting from everyone who starred in this. Even from that beautiful Brussels Griffon, 'Verdell'
100th like. I like how actors and actresses respectfully win Best Actor and Best Actress Oscars. They go hand in hand with brilliant performances.
That's why Oscars
She was very understanding in this scene. She understood he didn’t mean it and she gave him an opportunity to continue being in her presence as well as demonstrate how serious his comment was. Most would have never given a second chance. Helen in this scene was merciful and a good teacher.
The great thing about Carol's character is her immense compassion. It's what makes her special. The other waitresses couldn't handle Melvin for even ten seconds.
And she is already in love and don't realize it.
Acting masterclass. How Jack speaks using only his eyes... Both are outstanding...
As someone who had cancer at a very young age, I can fully understand a mother’s concern for her chronically ill child. Reconciliation of such relationships in such circumstances was one of, if not, the worst elements of being sick. All the misery of treatment, nothing compares. There is nothing harder I’ve gone through than to see my mom looking down at me through a gentle smile with a look of utter helplessness, vulnerability, and love in her eyes through tears she was fighting to hold back. It was a guilt that took years to deal with.
Seeing her wounded here is very difficult to watch. After her anger fades you can just see how hurt she is. Great acting on Hunt’s part.
Charles, I hope the cancer is gone for good and you've been healthy and happy..take care man
@@alwynsam5349 appreciate that, thanks for the kind words. 🙏🏼 Still here, a day at a time.
@@rekunta I don’t know you personally but I will continue praying for your speedy recovery.
It’s because of cancer I donate to ST. Jude’s; it killed my father, grandmother, currently working on taking my mom (but she might be in remission pending a scan next week), and my brother in law too; although the cancer he has killed two of his brothers young, both under 50. Cancer is a horrible disease and I’m a bio-chemist working with folks trying to kill this disease for good. I’m in BSL-4 so I deal with Ebola mainly. Glad to hear you recovered; I can’t imagine what you and your mother went through.
@@stfjesusfreak thank you, and I’m very sorry to hear all that you’ve lost. Cancer is an absolute monster, I’ve also lost a grandmother, uncle, and a few friends to it. The best to your mother and brother in law, hopefully it will be great news. 🤞🏼👍🏼🙏🏼
@GemiJazzFuse81 don’t know why my notifications didn’t pick up your comment, but thank you. 😊
brilliant acting by Helen here you really feel her pain
Him realizing what he said lmao classic
She's not annoying, her character is very protective of her sick son. He said the wrong thing at the wrong time & if I were her, I'd have strangled him. Everyone was so great in this.
Steven McBride HEAR! HEAR! I have not seen as evocative a performance since Cher in Mask. Helen was better in this almost than she was in Cast Away. This film was a work of art.
Then the person who kills you goes to jail with multiple witnesses or can get charged with assault/attempted murder if you live, either way it changes nothing to get worked up over someone saying your loved one will perish. All things that live die. So what if someone says something you like will die, no reason to get worked up over the truth.
EmptyMan000 what is "truth"?
The truth is the everything you see and hear that lives will perish because that is life's hitch. You live then you die. What begins must end at some point sooner or later. That is one of many truths of this world. Tell me I am going to die? Yeah, so what? So will you and everyone and everything you love and cherish will do the same. It's like saying water is wet.
EmptyMan000 not correct. Guess again
This scene was executed to perfection ...well deserved Oscars for these two 👍
perfection until one realizes that the character took his plastic ware out the baggie and presents them to a questionable table cloth
Jack nicholson is an awesome actor.
So is Helen Hunt 🌟
Legend🙏🏻
Everyone is talking about the acting, but all I can think about is eating that breakfast he just described
Right man, its a well-balanced meal but minimal bacon.
enjoyitbro
Such a funny comment that only gets funnier...kudos 👏
@@witchfindergeneral5366 It'd probably be that American style bacon, more like fried frazzled fat strips rather than the lovely meaty hammy stuff in a proper British bacon butty.
@@juliapigworthy lol British food is terrible, shush
British bacon is tasteless compared to American bacon (at least in my experience). But yes, it sounds a nice meal Melvin is ordering.
They are both so real in this scene, glad they each won an oscar for this movie.
I think Jack Nicholson did great in the scene . he perfectly showed his indifference to a lot of things. What he said about her son was not meant to be rude or hurt her feelings he honestly wasn't thinking and just running his mouth like he always does. After noticing her reaction to what he said, he figured out that he really screwed the f up!! Lol
Never judge a book by it's cover. You may just miss the greatest book ever written.😉
Honestly I think her reaction served to help him get better. Afterward he had to associate running his mouth with the emotional embarrassment of being talked down in front of all of those people and by someone he liked. I'm sure that feeling came up whenever he started rambling after that, enough to at least let him be more present about what he was saying, so that he could avoid feeling that way again.
He said the existential fact unknowingly hurting someone else's feelings because he is more intelligent than the average person. It wasn't rudeness.
If her son on the other hand wasn't on verge of dying young, she wouldn't have such a fragile psyche.
Besides, it was she who was rude to him.
@@metal87power It's not more intelligent to simply say something that everyone else already knows with no filter, it's just hurtful and it is rude. If you don't understand such a basic social convention, then maybe you need therapy.
It's just a movie 🤣
Probably my favorite American Comedy. These two worked so well together. This film had me crying and laughing at the same time.
'Comedy' seems a bit of 'a miss' in classification....
@mdd1963 yeah this film is depressing despite the title
In my opinion, this is one of the greatest movies of all time.
Absolutely
Helen Hunt has a beautiful frailty within her acting that is hard to come by. Anyone that can act so well it makes us forget everyone else in the room my hat is off to them.
what a relationship these two had. He realized what he said about 5 seconds after and then was like oooooo I did it again.
Why did he take so long to respond when she threatened him? It was like he was trying to test her patience.
@@1091Floyd21 ya
@@1091Floyd21 His brain had to fight its way out of its usual routines to process and recognise that the feelings of others actually mattered and could impact his future, and that he could impact theirs. I think it's the first time in this movie when he starts to see himself through someone else's eyes and he starts to realise that he might need to adjust his own behaviour instead of using bluster to keep scary people at a safe distance.
@@1091Floyd21 his dad used to beat him so he prob froze in fear with guilt and embarrassment cuz he cant see things from others perspectives while he just speaks whats on his mind i have that issue not to this degree tho. its written all over his face
I like how immediately after he says it his face drops. He knew right away he fucked up.
Jack Nicholson nails that look of regret once you say something that you know was out of line
Great movie. On the surface, very funny lines. But at its core. It’s about accepting people with all their flaws, and learning to see the good in them.
I understood clearly what he said was horrible years ago when I saw the movie, but as a parent now, what I didn't appreciate was the hurt and restraint she showed in the face of the horror. Great acting by them both!
Well said, not sure I would have remained that composed.
@@scubasteve7303 , I know I wouldn't.
i love everything about him. acting. accent. charming. nice talk. crazy. decent. I mean everything you want an actor has Jack
Does anyone else realize how many times Jack Nicholson has talked about eggs in movie scenes lol
One of his best films
I think he regretted saying that immediately after saying it. Not because of the possibility of never eating there again but because he felt bad about saying such a thing about a kid
Probably both
Plus he liked her a lot and felt bad about hurting her.
I think he's the type of person who says stuff without realizing what he's saying. Once he saw her reaction he realized that what he said was not cool or at least would not be considered cool by Carol.
Also he made up for his bad mouth later by hiring a doctor for him.
@@dreamworld6 Ah, yes, the ghostbuster
Timing level: expert
drpapa26 Thats what I was thinking
One of the greatest scenes I’ve ever seen.
Hunt and Nicholson delivered and felt the deafening silence of guilt. A brutal and beautiful scene.
When she called him a "crazy f**k", that's when I lost it.
Of all Jack Nicholson's characters, this is far and beyond my favorite.
Been a long time since I have seen this film. Amazing writing and stellar performances from Nicholson and Hunt. I really miss Jack :(
It's amazing that I did not hate him at this point and turn off the movie and like him at the end. Such great acting by Helen Hunt. That award was well deserved
This is what great actors do.... They deliver.... True feelings... Again can't say enough good things about this movie.
I wonder if they knew they were going to sweep the Oscars when they made this
Yes they did. Every actor who read the script wanted to be in on this, seasoned pro's with many films to their name actually auditioned for a role in this movie. It was the best written film of the year. A goldmine.
I SAID OVEREASY
😃😃
That was anger management
My fav movie ever! At least he becomes nice in the end. Suffice to say I don't ever truly believe he was horrible, not really evil, just not understood. Love this film
I agree, Mr. Blake. It wasn't so much because he was heartless; he simply needed to learn how to better manage.
@@jpx8793
he just spoke his thoughts out loud and the longer your alone the more bitter you are and the harder it is to see what you say from others perspectives
I love how he’s fully expecting her to write him off like everyone else does but when she doesn’t after he said something so awful that was when he truly fell in love with her
i dont think thats what happened. i think he was rambling and just saying his thoughts out loud not realizing it from her perspective
The scene is about body chemistry (heat!) which is already there and scary to both but with Melvin's over analysis as a writer with OCD he is terrified and as a coping mechanism he says outrageous things to detract attention from the heat easing him out, but sometimes his fear makes him go to far and say things most inappropriate. When he realizes he sits there and lets her chastise him because even though he is terrified of body heat he is more terrified of losing her and the physical feeling.
Jack Nicholson: amazing in every movie
If I overheard a waitress saying that I'd probably leave.
Good riddance
This is such a good movie. I havent seen it in years.
spencer was on the cutting edge of societal evolution, he started the “allergic-to-everything’ craze at least 15 years before it caught on
Helen Hunt was known at the time as a sitcom actress. I’m glad she got cast in this highly regarded movie. I would compare her casting with Mary Tyler Moore being cast is Ordinary People.
Such powerful acting from both Hunt and Nicholson. Love this movie!
the realization sets in that what he said was wrong is so well done.
Well, that goes beyond being a rude customer. LOL
1:35 WHEN HE KNEW HE FUCKED UP 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
im pretty sure it was at 0:53 but he froze in fear and embarrassment and humiliation
One scene better then all of the movies of this decade together....omg
Happy 25th anniversary, As Good As It Gets!
Released 12/25/1997!
Love his character in this movie. So much cringe. lol
About Schmidt maybe just better
Lol as a 13 yr old my mum always brought me up on rly old movies this has to be my favourite😂❤❤
...I wonder if anybody noticed the very end of this scene - when Carol was visibly upset while taking her colleague‘s earrings and her colleague understood the cause of her state and she gave a look at Malvin
I love the face jack makes when he realized he messed up big time
Never insult your waitress or you will get a free spit ball with your breakfast.
He went too far with that one, seriously how could he not realise that that was not going to go down well
Nazreen Mo you know he had very little insight into the effect his behaviour had on others. He wasnt only OCD. He was a sociopath.
Kevin Russell .... narcissist not a sociopath 😂
He could be both.
Kevin Russell ...true 😊
Snazzy M he realised what he said was wrong.
Damn what a horrid way to cross the line. Another eerie fact is three years later after this movie’s release, Helen Hunt played Arlene in Pay it Forward, and her son actually died in that film😱😨
This scene is one of my favorite scenes in film history. Nicholson’s character is VERY full of himself. Yeah he has OCD but he’s also full of himself. Here, he has a very humane moment and it shows that he does have a humane side. It’s just very minimal. And servers at restaurants are trained to take things with a grain of salt from rude customers. I think any restaurant manager or owner would stick by their employee if any customer said something like that to them.
100%
She straight checked his ass like a gangsta.
How Jack Nicholson can convey the emotions...From veiled insult.....to indifference..to quick realization...slow building regret..then nervousness...while saying NOTHING. That is expertise in acting.
I've never actually watched this movie until last night, and when I saw this part.. even I was like; "Jesus Christ dude."
1:26 when i saw you as the joker.
That waitress at the end is Missi Pyle.
0:51 Nicholson's character takes a minute to realize how much he hurt Hunt's character. Great acting from both.
I would count it in milliseconds, his reaction.
I remember first tongue slip to GF. I was like jack's gesture. I feel like scolded puppy.
I'll bet the next "tongue slip" made up for what you said.
What did you say?
Nicholson/Hunt.....as good as it gets.
First I had watched this movie it was in the NIH. It was selected for the scientizes to psycho analyzing for the psychology doctors in the NIH in Bethesda Maryland not far from where I live. After the film there were lots of questions and answers. They select 5 films every year just for scientizes to psycho analyze and to teach as well as learn from it. I was one of the lucky one to attend and learned a lot from it. NIH is an amazing institution with thousands of scientizes. Building 10 is the hospital of the NIH with amazing doctors.
I know one thing, these 3 are AMAZING actors!
this movie has a lot of moments that stopped me breathing.
The man knows a good breakfast.
I prefer scrambled eggs, with cheese.
Helen Hunt said the f-word 3 times in this movie, yet it was still rated PG-13. I don't know how the movie got away with it.
Because there's something overwhelmingly decent about Helen Hunt.
Being a major studio production probably helped. Even though the box office of an R-rated movie in the 90's wouldn't have fallen off that much compared to a PG13 movie.
It’s still about 997 f-words short of Goodfellas record.
She tells him the manager has threatened that if he ever acts like that again he’ll be banned. He silently dismisses this and orders his food. After he realizes what he just said to her she gives him the REAL threat of being banned that he actually takes seriously. Even though she’s just a waitress she carries an authority all her own.
This could easily be my father only he is a more chronic case! He sometimes vocalizes his innermost fears which can come across as insensitive or callous and also acts out his fears like a living nightmare. He is easily mistaken for someone who is extremely antisocial even though he has a lot of love and compassion for others. He is also very generous but don't get on the wrong side of him as he can easily go into 'fight or flight' and use it as a weapon! It is a debilitating illness! Great film, amazing acting from Jack Nicholson!
Her performance here is phenomenal
now that's a mom and a waitress.

this scene was so awkwarddddd i remember wacthing this one day when i was a kid i felt second hand embarassment from jack and felt bad for the mother what a great scene lol
i love this fucking movie
It's on Netflix now!
Saw this for my English studies in Year 12 of high school. Even as a 17 year old, I praised this scene of brilliant acting. Helen Hunt is particularly noteworthy. The fact she threatened Jack Nicholson shows she won’t take disrespect even from a mentally ill person over her son.
One of my favorite films.
She was the only one who could handle him...you crazy F$?k!!! Classic
simply brilliant....perfect couple
Helen Hunt 😍
