Watch Christian Bale Burn Rubber in ‘Ford v Ferrari’ | Anatomy of a Scene

- How do you go about recreating a 24-hour auto race for a movie? If you’re the director James Mangold, meticulously.
His latest film, “Ford v Ferrari,” takes place in the mid-1960s as the Ford Motor Company is trying to come up with a car that can beat out Ferrari in the Le Mans auto race. The American executives bring on the car designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and the driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale) to aid in that task.
This scene takes place at the beginning of the 1966 edition of the race as Miles is preparing. Narrating the sequence, Mangold said that he wanted to use the camera following Miles down a hallway and then out to the track as a technique to reveal the spectacle of the race, with overwhelming crowds and a heightened energy.
The race starts the same way Le Mans used to actually begin, with the drivers standing across the track from their cars, then running over and leaping into the vehicles before pulling out. Mangold said the moment, captured in one shot, was a challenge to coordinate but was important to give a sense of authenticity to the scene.
He said he shot as much of the action as possible with real cars and stunt drivers, using visual effects not as much for the racing moments, but more to populate the stands so the production wouldn’t need 20,000 extras each day.

Recent Ferrari models look much more slick than older models. There are 2-3 models that passed the age of time (Testarossa is still amazing), but those bubble cars have much more work to do to look like the GT

Saw it in IMAX yesterday. Great Movie 👍
One of the greatest films i have ever seen. Script, Acting, Action sequences, Emotion..&did i mention.. thee cars? 😂. The film was flawless. I put this in a similar league with Apollo 13. Hail to the Director James Mangold and Rob Johnson (vehicle director)
Both movies had very deep and excellent casts.
Agree on everything expect for the CGI.
@Wednesday Is the Leo Beebe character a real person or just someone created for dramatic purposes? Because the character if he was real was a total piece of $hit.
@Wednesday but the movie isn't called 'Ford vs Ferrari'. Its called 'Le Man's 66'. Why is everyone calling it Ford v Ferrari? I need answers😂

@@RedLP5000S If you're into CGI, I guess it's better, but it's not more authentic looking to real racing, to which Le Mans with Steve McQueen is vastly superior...….
Yes...I think, my own opinion, was that THIS is what McQueen was shooting for, but fell short. Still, loved the racing scenes of Le Mans didn't find much of a plot, but I was a BIG Ford and Porsche fan and in the new Surround Sound....thought I was in Heaven!

You should see every movie you can in Imax even if you have to wait a few weeks after release. Even for Endgame release I waited and waited then stormed into Imax to see it Endgame in a near empty. Well worth it.As for this film 9.5/10
@@mezo72271 that depends on the film and what kind of imax theatres you saw it in. The lowest, most common IMAX only has a 2k digital projector I think with not a very big screen. You'll see a huge difference in proper 70mm film projector IMAX screens with big display and insane sound system, especially for films shot on either IMAX cameras at 70mm film or maybe on Panavision 60mm film. They say the resolution for these huge format film is around 15k compared to a regular 4k digital camera.
Brilliant! And as he says you get more emotional when you see the film from the driver's point of view rather than the crowd. Well done James Mangold!
This movie was visually stunning and really made you feel like you went back in time.
James Mangold is one of the finest directors i have ever seen. And the way he talks i just overwhelming. And TBH none of his movies are bad u know like having every movie with an imdb rating average of 7 u must know he is a great one.
Alot of attention to detail went into this Movie to give it a 1966 feel to it, set decor and background autos to the recreated race crew wardrobe and key locations.. Just GO.......
awesome movie James!
Well done, sir. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. For many of us gearheads, this victory represents a watershed moment in American motorsports. Shelby was a red, white, and blue hotrodder tasked with winning the most challenging race on the planet and it took a cast of like minded racers to buy into his vision and make it a reality. Thank you for bringing their story to the big screen.
As a driver myself I watched this movie on the big screen. keep in mind this is my favorite racing story and my dream car here. While watching the Daytona scene and the Le Man scene I felt as if I was in the car. I distinctly remember having the same look and feel i do when I am driving and after those scenes ended I literally had to take a breath just like real life and when that happened I kinda fell back in to the real world and then i realized I was almost sweating, my heart was beating and I had the largest smile on my face. I looked around at everyone in the room and just kinda sat there for a minute and sat back in my chair. I asked my dad later (he was there with me) and he said that i definitely looked intense, almost kinda stressed from the race. I have never been so immersed in to a movie. When he said how he tried to make it from the point of view of a driver, he did a fantastic job because I am a driver and I felt as if I was in the car and I won the race. It was amazing. I had a not so great season last year with lots of stupid issues that i dealt with so the scene with the door honestly made me feel a little better about my bad luck last season, and although I was not there, it felt great to experience what in my mind was a big moment after a kinda rough season. This is my favorite movie so thank you so much for making it.
This is amazing, you can tell that Mr. Mangold is a huge car guy and racing history buff and that this movie was mad with love by the passion and emotion you can hear in his voice.
Automobile racing during the 1960s-1970s was astonishingly dangerous. It's noteworthy that three great drivers mentioned in this movie as Ken Miles' competitors, Walt Hansgen, Lorenzo Bandini, and Bruce McLaren, were killed during this period. Hansgen and McLaren were both killed while testing cars (in 1966 and 1970, respectively) and Bandini died in a horrifying crash near the end of the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix.
All I can think is “You’re only supposed to close the bloody door.” Fans of the original Italian Job will know what I am talking about.
Chris Miles ah, a man of culture
I wasn't planning on seeing this, but the fact that the director of Logan is working with what is - by all accounts - another brilliant Christian Bale performance got me stoked.
Genius shots, Genius movie. Bravo
the sound of the straight cut gears in the final seconds of the video was great
Ford v Ferrari is the best film I’ve ever seen, and car guy or not, it’s a must see. The acting is phenomenal, the storytelling is amazing, and everything overall is just perfection!
Just watched the movie in Laser IMAX. It has a strong message about perseverance against bureaucracy, corporate politics and having a passion for what you love. Excellent casting and good acting that you feel like you are in that race track feeling the passion and the adrenaline of the driver. On the otherhand, it puts Ford like the other major auto companies that try to crush new comers and take credit for their creativity. It is worth watching movie.
I love how many of the movies we are seeing recently or a throwback to a bygone era where they focused on the script the screenplay and the acting and it is very evident of that fact in this movie. This was an amazing movie with some wonderful actors incredible cinematography and dialogue and well worth seeing more than once at the movie theater.

"I’m sure you’re well aware, it’s hard to get a movie - an adult-oriented movie with adult themes in it…it’s hard to get these movies made now. We exist in segregated world of movies which are under $30M for adults, and the rest for 13 year olds or streaming,” - James Mangold

3:50 Gotta admit; that Ferrari looks amazing!! Too bad they didn't keep it up through the years!!
Literally in the theater parking lot trying to decide what movie to see. Thanks to this video I'm gonna watch this movie.
Should have won the Oscar for best picture. Perfect movie
My compliments and thanks to the crew who made this film, the scenery from Le Mans was spot on, with the famous Dutray clock (Dutray are local LeMans juwellers) and I think the sotry was great, i specially liked the character that played Henri Ford.
Ken Miles family is sitting at home in USA roughly in the same time of day as in LeMans. It starts at 16:00 local time. LA is -9 hours to France. So it's about 7 am. Not impossible, of course. But a bit weird.
You must not be familiar with Formula One. It's the same here every race weekend!

Christian Bale was amazing. Matt Damon just played himself with a Texan accent imo.

This. This is a proper racing movie. Would love one about group B one day
Love this film!! Can't wait for a blu-ray release. Please include a GT40 model with a box set.
Yeah good job on the camera angles when ur racing its hard for the average driver to understand the way u drive a race track...I exceptionally like the shot were the car is passing a slower class car and when u turn u drift inside to out side and that camera angle showed the line the arc and how it looks passing a car and how line a criss cross when cars are at different speeds rear engine versus front engine handling, something that makes this race mist difficult the degree of classes and the speed difference....is incredible....but that angle was nice new and rarely seen...
Richard Deasy would like to note that at 2:47 in this clip Christian Bale failed to close the door completely, thus putting himself and that beautiful car at risk, so duly noted.
My husband & I loved your movie. It was terrific.
