  • As the title says, this is the oldest known version of the Hupfeld Phonoliszt-Violina in existence today. The violins are VERY out of tune since the weighted tuning mechanism Hupfeld invented had not been developed yet. It is suspected that this instrument is from around 1909 which is EXTREMELY early since the instrument was invented in 1907. The video is much shorter than normal because we didn't want to put too much wear on the instrument and I don't think any sane musically inclined person could listen to it for more than a minute with the lack of tuning. Despite the flatness, it played very well for its age. Enjoy! (Or at least try to...)

Note how it says "Violina-Phonoliszt" instead of "Phonoliszt-Violina", another trademark of the early instruments. I know of another instrument with this branding in Italy which also has "Violina" on the top crest instead of "Hupfeld".

This instrument is said to have been made in 1908! Plays very well for its age!

I think this may have been in the Graham Whitehead collection.
