Remember that skincare is extremely personal to everybody's skin. What works for me, may not work for you. But I hope my videos give you some good ideas for products, techniques, and Ingredients to try.
Also, I'm obviously not a dermatologist or a doctor, so all opinions on products and anything else I'm presenting, are results and findings from my own experience and research.
And that's why I'm here, to share my research and my findings that go further than what is said on the bottle or google!
But, everything I present is always a discussion for you to join in with :)
If you have any serious skin concerns, please see a dermatologist/doctor.

I'm sooo sick of all the trends that are just re-hashes of long-existing methods. There are so very few hard and fast rules to skincare. People need to experiment and do what works for them.
Iâm beginning to think skincare brands purposefully develop actives to irritate the skin so they can then develop a product to fix the irritation.
Right? That's why I stopped using Paula's Choice after they launched their "calm" line. Of course that was the basic marketing step after years of marketing their BHA exfoliant.
Idk I need the exfoliant to fight the pollution in my city and then since my skin is relatively sensitive I need to calm it later. But whenever Iâm in Europe I barely have to do anything. So I donât think itâs intentional but it just happens to be a side effect.
After spending an embarrassing amount of money on everyone else's holy grails and not seeing any difference in my skin, I'm definitely back to basics. Because I'm not spending so much money on a bunch of things that straight up do nothing, I feel like I can splash out on the few things I do use. I'm happy to keep rebuying my $50 sunscreen that sits perfectly on my skin, rather than cycling through 6 or 7 different ones at $25 each that I hated. I have literally one serum that has multiple actives that I use morning and night. Since starting tret, I barely have to exfoliate anymore either. Frees up cash to be able to spend it on things like micro needling etc. that have much more impact on my skin, as well. It's really freeing to be off the skincare product hamster wheel, to be honest. Still love the videos though because they help me reflect on what it is I am looking for in a skincare routine â€
Started tret a couple of weeks ago and havent rebought any serums since. Can I ask you, which one you kept using?
@@leateber3640 It's a random one that I think might only sell here in NZ (maybe Australia too?). It's the Supercharge Glow Serum from the 'Happy Skin' Essano range. Has fermented postbiotics, vit C, niacinamide, ceramide complex and hyaluronic acid so covers pretty much everything I'm personally interested in.
@@natalielikesstuff4062 Thank you đ
It's hilarious when you share something you do that's just intuitive, like adding a touch of balm on dry areas, and you gotta be like THIS IS NOT A HACK! This is just a thing you can do and it works for people who experience the same thinggg! đđđ
Like Roberts last video about the hype of makeup, I agree 100%. Thereâs just too much going on. People canât keep up and the market is overly saturated with products, gimmicks, trends, etc. Everyone needs to take a step back and realize that they only need a the few products that work for them, given a few fun product and thatâs it!
Beauty industry is desperate to get our money and is so out of control đ«
I agree âïž I also agree that the beauty industry is desperate to get our money and is definitely out of control and puts out Sh!t products. I try to listen to a few influencers Iâve grown to trust and buy from brands that have a purpose. Like this company called Gemini Beauty, the creator was 17yrs old when she started her company a few years ago and she has Lupus which is close to home as I have several chronic illnesses and my aunt has lupus. She donates the proceeds to the Lupus Foundation of LA. I shared her company when she 1st started out so much she sent me her favorite product of 3 ( she only started with 3 products) which was her moisturizer and a code for family/friends to get a discount. Not sure if the code is still active or not ,honestly I need to re-order from her. Her family already has money, so this is something she is passionate about ( not saying she has money, but you can tell her family worked their butts off ) skincare for sensitive skin and skincare that works. But yes omg is it so over saturated.
I am just starting to dive into skincare because Iâm getting older. Iâm very lost but thankfully my co-worker recommended your channel and Iâve really enjoyed learning from you, especially figuring out which affordable brands are the best. Thanks.
In a way I'm actually glad that my perimenopausal + non hodgkin's lymphoma affected skin decided to completely freak out & become reactive to almost everything I was using when it did. It totally forced me to take another look at my skincare routine and then strip it back to basics. Prior to that I had a Korean skincare inspired routine that was working really well, but at the same time I was constantly looking for the next 'better' product that was out there. Now I have a limited number of products that don't cause my skin to react with burning redness and welts, so it's really meant having to be extra aware of what actually works for my skin & then sticking to it, instead of thinking, "Yeah but if this product is good, maybe this other product is even better."
My current skincare regime is:
Morning - Cleanse with a gentle foaming cleanser, rinse and apply a rosewater & glycerine toner when my skin's still damp, follow up with Oil of Olay sensitive skin (cream for colder weather, lotion for warmer weather), finish off with SPF 50 sunscreen if I'm going out.
Evening - Pre-cleanse with cold cream (I rotate between four different ones, depending on the season and if my skin has any specific needs at any one time), cleanse again with a gentle foam cleanser, rosewater and glycerine toner applied over damp skin, Oil of Olay moisturiser and then an application of either a Glycerine or Lard based cream/balm for overnight 'slugging'.
Exfoliation is done manually (gently) with a soft face cloth as needed (so paying attention to my skin's needs rather than sticking to a strict 1, 2 or 3 times a week, etc, schedule; same goes for my version of 'slugging', what cream I use depends entirely on what my skin actually needs).
And of course on top of that, drinking enough fluid, eating a well balanced diet, trying to get enough quality sleep & reducing stress levels.
I scaled down - it was getting out of hand. Now I have a few favorites that I cycle through and my skin is doing fine. Mostly Korean. I'm happy to see another Korean shopping option.
I remember going on my skincare journey for the first time, and there was so many things that I felt lost. Eventually, I broke it down to cleanse, exfoliate (on occasion), tone, and moisturize. I also do a face mist on occasion too. Most of my stuff is CeraVe (due to samples I got from my Grandma), but it definitely works for my skin. This video definitely helps in clarifying things, and it definitely solidifies my opinion of skincare needing to be simple. Thank you James! ^^
Sunscreen?..
Iâd recommend a moisturizing sunscreen if you use a hydrating tonerđđđœ
Oh god I am HERE for this video. TikTok hasnât helped the product glut or lack of influencer trust from CZcams, itâs actively made it worse IMO, and is providing less useful information. Thank you for helping to cut through the clutter.
I've been binging your and Robert's videos to get my game back. I was thinking that I've been overwhelmed with all of it, not knowing where to start beyond cleanser and moisturizer, and here you are. You and Robert have both answered my questions with videos! đđđ
About 6 months ago I cut my skincare down to 3 steps at night 2 in the morning. 3 products total and itâs in the best condition it has ever been.
what products do you use if I may ask?
@@emilymelis6611 I use A Cera Ve cleanser and face cream and T tree oil.
@@angiebarth1292 Thank you!
Thank you James for helping to go back to basics. And as always, love watching/listening to you. â€
Simplicity is better. It also saves time & money. My current morning skincare routine is only a cleanser and a moisturizing sunscreen. My skin is better than when I was doing 5-6 steps.
Wish I could do that, I tried simplifying and my skin went terrible again
@@jessicawilson5908 Oh, Iâm sorry to hear that. Everyoneâs skin is different. I used to have quite a lot of acne & would get casual new pimples almost every month. But I guess my body has passed that stage because I havenât had any breakouts in almost 2 years. Iâve been able to just eat what I want & simplify my skincare without having any skin troubles.
This is where I'm at. Morning: gentle cleanser, toner, moisturising sunscreen.
PM: double cleanse (with a nice oily balm), tretinoin 3x a week, night cream, a few drops of oil. My skin is so happy now.
@@sangoswoman Iâm just scared to use Tretinoin. I feel like it would ruin my skin or cause breakouts lol.
Omg speaking of torriden. Their solid in essence in 100ml has SAVED my skin. Itâs literally a ceramide serum with 5 ceremides to the top of the ingredients list. The solid in cream is also magnificent! Not as heavy as I expected not as light either. Those two are my favorites of this year that Iâve discovered. Iâm really loving torridens solid in line looking forward to trying more from them!
I seriously thought double cleansing was really overhyped and then we got some new wash cloths that are white and I went to wash my face after using my micellar water one night and saw the leftover makeup on the wash cloth and vowed to ALWAYS double cleanse at night.
I love your educational and humorous take on skin care and making people feel good about the skin their in.
It's so much things, so many brands...honestly i have 2 or 3 favorite Brands since my teenage years and i'm 38 now and i still like the same stuff. But i love your vĂdeos. I learn a lot with you James and besides that, you are so funny and your voice is just perfection.
Just came to your channel after watching doggie rescue one I follow daily. Your skin is looking so healthy, almost translucent, beautiful James đ
Absolutely love the recommendations! And thank you for the reminders for people of color with SPF. Everyone needs it no matter the skin tone, skin cancer doesnât care!
I'm currently in love with KAHI products! Been loving that balm of theirs for a few years now and currently obsessed with their face cream and mist. The packaging is absolutely gorgeous. There's something with the mist that just makes me feel so good.
I love your channel and I'm here early(ish) and this is the BEST closure to a terrible week. Thank you for being my calm in the storm.
Great video! I finally found a mineral sunscreen that I can use without having an allergic reaction. That was the last piece I needed for my skin care & majeup routines. I appreciate this video because I have to limit what I use due to allergies & asthma, so I appreciate watching your basic routine. Thank you for sharing!
I realised all this over a year ago. Not only has it saved me a ton of money on buying products with sub-par formulas not actually suited to by skin, but it's worked wonders for my skin to go for a simple approach of having just a 3-step skin care routine of cleanser, toner/serum and moisturiser. Also saves time on your skin care routine too not having to use so many products.
Yes!!!! Same with makeup!!! Letâs go back to basics!!! â€â€â€â€
Just in time for me to have James with me while I cook! So relaxing! Such great information with a beautiful voice!
I only wear makeup maybe twice a week now, so my go to skin care is sunscreen 2x a day, then I double cleanse, and at night I will exfoliate 2x a week and follow it up with moisturizer. I will add a hydrating toner if I'm feeling sassy.
RE: exfoliation
As someone with atopic dermatitis and eczema prone skin, I only exfoliate with the cosrx aha bha right after cleansing, at night before I do anything else) because I had hormonal imbalances after quitting the pill so I got a ton of acne
I had been using it every day last week and now will space it out more as I reintroduce retinol
Exfoliating rlly helped manage my acne and I use a really occlusive moisturiser right after
Iâm so so happy that you mentioned the brand Torriden. Iâve been using the Torriden Solid In Lip Essence and Iâve been really enjoying it and was wondering about some of the other products they have. This video really helped me and Iâm definitely going to try more from the brand & otherâs youâve mentioned, I really agree that we definitely need to get back to the basics with our skincare. Thanks đ
Iâve been looking for a new lip product. Thanks for mentioning this. Iâll have to check it out.
@@cammystorm yes Iâm so happy to hear I can help. I really liked it and itâs $8 or $9 on amazon. I think Iâm allergic to beeswax and thatâs how I found this and took a chance even though Iâd never herd of the brand. I just finished the tube up. I do use another product with it with spf bc this is a lip essence so I assumed itâs intended to use with other balms or lip products. Are lips skin is really really delicate, so we should treat it like our face and use more than one product to protect the delicate skin I believe at least. So at night I use a lip mask , during the day I use the Torriden Lip Essence bc itâs kinda liquidy even though it says solid in lip essence and I put a thicker layer of a gloss or an spf over that. Iâm 44 and Iâve had issues my whole life with chapped lips , which in part is due to my being a lip licker lol and I honestly believe Iâve built a allergy to beeswax bc about four or five years ago my skin became sensitive to everything I used to use and I done a little research and a dermatologist said it could be an allergy to beeswax,so vegan lip products donât have that ingredient, idk if Torriden is vegan bc they definitely could have something else in it but definitely not beeswax. It took a little time for my lips to heal ,but my lips are much better now. Iâm reordering asap. Let me know what you think!?
I needed this video! The skincare world is so oversaturated with information that just leaves me with more questions.
Thanks for this video. Iâm almost 50 and have always been into skincare but the trends in the last decade or so were getting out of hand! Too many steps with actives! Iâve simplified to 5 steps in the morning and 3 steps at night and it still seems crazy!
I also love night creams now that Iâm a bit older. My skin is slightly on the dry side so I find that I might use a night cream during the day especially in the winter. My favorite trends in the last decade have been around K beauty by far. Most of the products that Iâve tried really just agree with my skin.
The cosrx aha/bha spray toner is the best Iâve ever tried. Itâs gentle and doesnât give me a tingling feeling. I have a backup already cause I refuse to be without it đ â€đ
I love your content James! you could probably talk about anything and I would watch itđ
ever since i went back to the basic my skin has cleared up so much! Itâs just annoying how so many products work so well for what they say they do but then they also exfoliate so i cant use it bc i already have an exfoliating toner that does all i nee
A good rice cleanser from Naturium and exfoliating polish from Tatcha (makeup cleansing balm if I'm wearing makeup) is perfect for my uber dry skin...I only use water for cleansing in the AM. Morning and night routines start with hydrate, hydrate, hydrate with milky hydrating essences. Niacinamide Vit C and Lactic Acid, matcha, Tatcha Water Cream and Dewy Night Cream, Glycolic Acid and Retinol and CoxRX SNAIL SNOT. Sounds like this no longer jives with your advice but you are the one that started my journey to perfect skin and I SO enjoy my skincare routines. Thank you James! You're the best.
This is exactly what I've been looking for. I feel like rubbing at my face for 40min a day is probably counteractive
My skin LOVES exfoliating toners!! Farmacy and Peach & Lily!
Iâd love to see you and Robert test sunscreen sticks with makeup! đ
I agree with exfoliants in everything. I don't need 5 product in one routine with aha or bha. Same with niacinamide and ha, I don't need them in everything. But I would love to see more reviews for multi balms, so many brand released them
I agree with going back to basics. Iâm finding the only one ingredient serum I keep going back for is salicylic acid, but thatâs only because Iâm breakout prone.
Also, James Iâd love to know your thoughts on Grown Alchemist. I recently got their age-repair intensive moisturizer in an Ipsy bag. My skin seems to loves it, but the moisturizer itself literally stinks! Iâm wondering if itâs good enough to put up with the smell and buy a full sized product.
As someone who follows zero trends, all the skin care trends just brushed off of me. I stick to the basics that have been been there for me for over 20 years and proven their undenied loyalty and support :)
I love this, thank you so much for the step by step. I'm always so confused by when to put what on over what, etc.
Can you talk about what ingredients you shouldn't mix others also? I was told something about tanning & retinol or waxing? I can't keep track anymore.
Jaaaaaames! Nudestix just released their cica cleansing jelly milk! It claims to be able to replace the double cleansing process of your routine with only one product. I'm all for a minimal skincare routine so I would love your thoughts on this! đ
Just as a friendly FYI, Nudestix is a shady company! For example, they made claims their products were vegan and some werenât. They also add wasteful tins to their packaging and claim itâs eco-friendly because you can mail them back to them , donât always pay content creators for doing promotional work for them, and were Trump supporters.
LOVE the balanceful line!
James please make a video on all your favorite fragrances!!
Hi James! If you love products that offer a lot of good ingredients in just one step of your routine you should try the Purito Cica barrier sleeping pack. It has ceramide, hyaluronic acid, green tea, panthenol , niacinamide.. really goos
I have very acne prone skin and I'm very jealous of your glassy skin, but I know that I'm trying my best and that my skin looks and feels better than ever even if it's not Good Skin.
Iâm back to cleanser, vitamin c (morning), tretinoin (night), one moisturizer and SPF. I use a mask once a week & Im done.
I like the brand bubble, the daydream cream has multi active, night mask is really nice, I like the packaging!
Sometimes Im just glad I wash my face and put moisturizer on at night. But if I do just a cream at night I use a cica barrier with cerimides from purito and lazy day is my elf hyaluronic triple bounce serum and gel cream and sun screen if I leave the bed lol
đđŒ youâre reading my mind!
Sun sticks may be ok for top ups throughout the day but probably not so good as your main sunscreen as you need an awful lot of swipes to get a proper coverage, Michelle at Lab muffin did a recent video and it was shocking how much you had to use so one swipe all over the face might feel nice and light but once you've added 3 layers you've still not reached spf 50 and it's all just sitting on your skin in a thick greasy layer.
Oh wow! Thanks for all this information.
Following you up for a few years and I have to admit that I swear by you, you are my reference when it comes to skincare.
Love your honesty and transparency.
Can't wait for your review on the Aloe 54.2 Aqua Tone Up Suncreen from Cosrx!!!
Actually, I am waiting for your review before ordering it. đ
Psssst psssst, sun is coming back and awful snow is going back to Hell here in Canada LOL
Excellent video! Thank you!
I do an oil and face wash by COSRX but I do love my ordinary because I think I was a witch in a previous life and love mixing my own potions and I'm extremely happy with my skin and I protect with a korean 50 spf
Love this! back to basics!
What do you think about physical exfoliation, like with the LUSH coffee scrub mask?
Can I apply the Toboco sunscreen under my makeup? I know some sunscreens recommend applying it as a last step to your routine.
i love this sort of sponsorship jsyk < 3
James!!! Im trying this new brand, EqualRXN. Specifically the oatmilk serum and tumeric serum. Really wanna try the mushroom toner, too. They seem pretty good and well priced. Have you tried them?!?!
Just discovered your channel, and I am obsessed... love the extra work in the description box for people who lives globally.. NEVER seen anyone do that before. †đ đ đ€đ«¶
I spend lots of money on stuff Iâm supposed to need until I noticed that my skin just doesnât like some of those products. I threw out my niacinamide serums and stopped using retinol / retinal. Nowadays Iâm focusing on calming and supporting my barrier. I donât use âone purpose productsâ anymore except for my derm prescribed azelaic acid and my bha (which Iâm using once a week). Iâm 42 and my skin is better than ever despite being oily and acne prone.
I love numbuzen as a Korean skin care brand it does work really well on my sensitive skin
Does the cleanser work well with removing makeup?
Loved this video! Iâm getting lost in all the content!
So how would you use a balm that is in a tub? The stick form makes a lot of sense to me tho, and I have super dry skin with eczema, so im sure I could use it. I don't get eczema on my face, but I get it on my neck, chest, and back, so I always take my hydrating toners/serums/moisturizer down my chest and on my back.
Imo, cosrx make the most gentle and affordable exfoliating product! Been using their AHA 7 Whitehad Liquid (forgot the name lol) for 4 years already!
You played into this exhaustive nature, but I agree.
So agree with the title of this video! đ
i've been using my muji oil cleanser as kind of my exfoliant if that makes sense?? i find that when i oil cleanse for about a minute, my nose sebum immediately goes away!!
I have very sensitive skin my skin care is the most complex itâs been in terms of how many products. My skin is finally starting to smooth out and reduce acne extreme sebum on my nose dry skin under my eyes. All I needed to know was what my skin actually needs.
Clarins cleanser (the one with the orange it works donât come for me đ€Ł).
Hydrating toner either a green tea toner or a peach toner.
Peptide and caffeine eye cream
SPF 50+ oil control serum
Resurfacing skin retinol (only apply as spot treatment not all over the face)!!! DONT DO IT if youâve sensitive skin youâll end up with retinol burn đŹđ©.
Hydrating gel or serum to finish if my skin is feeling like the Sahara dessert.
I double cleanse of a morning lol the products I use help my major rosacea so I will keep doing it lol but yes I'm glad single ingredient products are going away
I have been wondering what you think of the brand Elizavecca brand?
James Welsh is the best!!! đđđđđ§Ąâ€
I am in the middle with my skincare routine, I definitely have more serum steps than most 2-3 serum routines but I try to keep my overall routine within 10 ish steps lol. There are just too many things that work so great for my skin that I don't want to be without like Purito unscented, Benton snail bee essence, vitamin c, resveratrol, Tret, lactic acid, and peptides, etc... (dear god not all in the same routine though lol). I realize 10/12-step routines aren't for everyone and rotating works best for some but my dry skin looses its glow and protests with flakes when I simplify :)
Plus I am a skincare nerd who spends weeks-months researching ingredients, and reading studies, blogs, and reviews so why not put all that mid-level knowledge into a bada** skincare routine based on proven science, proven asian ingredients, and circumstantial evidence lol
đHello James đHappy Friday đ
I think I'm the only dry skin person I've heard of that has oily undereyes and eyelids. If I can get a (non-liquid) eyeliner that lasts longer than an hour I consider it a win, and eyeshow only doesn't separate into my eye crease if I've used a good quality eye primer. Probably why I never really got eye creams unless they had active ingredients. And my skin handles actives really well, so I can just put my retinol right under my eye.
Can you do a skin care routine where all the products have the same textuređ„ș
I don't like certain textures and I'm interested in trying new ones like jelly? But I'm finding it hard to understand and build a skin routine. It could be a video series.
Iâve found so many toners, cleansers, serums and sun screens I love over my 20yr skincare journey. But I still havenât found a âfavouriteâ moisturiser - they are either too heavy, too greasy or just donât add or seal in moisture. The search continuesâŠ..
That is a really good foam
I've been in hospital, so I missed your video yesterday.
You have no idea how great it is to see you this Saturday! In my drugged state, all I could think of was ' I'm missing the James Welsh video' đ€Ł.
Hope youâre on the mend!
AHAs bother my skin now, too, and I'm just done with them.
I have the tocobo sunscreen and sun stick ordered and I'm excited about it cuz you have yet to steer me wrong
Tocobo is so nice ive been had that suncreen it feels like velvet on the skin
Is it my phone or your video doing that blackout flash?
I doubled cleansed since the early-mid 80âs.
I just want to learn how to apply sunscreen around my eyes. I have not had luck with that at all.
Omfg thank you at last I understand about exfoliatingâŠ.when, and what sort I should be looking for
Your definitely right thoughâŠ..there is so many different potions and lotions âŠit does my head in !! I always have a bottle of made about skin serum âŠ..itâs brilliant for those days or night you canât be arsedđ

I need a routine for super super oily skin! My face is like an oil spill.
I don't know if anyone has a solution but i have no pimples on the rest of my face except for my nose and the contour of my nose, my skin gets itchy, red, and I have both pimples and whiteheads. When I use aha/bha I see no results and when I use super moisturising products to repair my skin barrier, the area gets super oily and I have even more blackheads. Does anyone know what I should do ??
iâve bought so many skincare products that have been trending and i still feel so lost. my skin is generally OK, i donât have cystic acne but i struggle with texture, dehydration, clogged pores, and tiny tiny pimples. iâve tried 10 step skin care and 3 step. iâve tried slugging and exfoliating. iâve bought from american brands and korean/japanese brands. everything iâve tried just gives me mediocre results. sure i have clean skin but nothing gives me the smooth, even, plump skin i want. i currently have COSRX snail mucin power essence, Haruharu black rice toner, B_LAB matcha cleanser, and ROUND LAB birch juice sunscreen in my amazon cart rn. letâs see if these help..
Who has done the carrot & coconut oil sunscreen thing because I have never heard of that.
If you are 43 and have the worldâs driest skin, a sunscreen oil is a lifesaver. I hate mineral sunscreens, and refuse to use any. They break me out, and leave the worst white cast. I even see the cast on every review you do of mineral sunscreens. I love me a Supergoop! Ceramide Sunscreen oil, and it leaves me with one less skincare product to use in the a.m. I try to keep my morning routine to a bare minimum. So, it may not be ânecessaryâ, but not every one of us likes goopy mineral sunscreen. I have never had any irritation from a chemical sunscreen, and with the oil, I have been using it for one full year this month, and I have never had a sunburn on my face since using this particular product.
Did anybody else squeal in excitement when he posted this video or any video in general?? đ
Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid stands the test of time! Still showing up 7 years later. Lol
I know this doesnât really apply to you, but can you do the âbest safe skincare for pregnant womenâ!? Itâs been so hard for me to find products that are trustworthy
Yes yes yes I have combination skin. Drives me nuts. I am all about convenient I need a t-shirt that says I live by convenienceđ
Hello darling. Yes, let's please go back to basics.
Do you have anydiscount codes for this brand??
Can you please review UpCircle?
Hi, do you still use the glow recipe pha/bha toner everyday? Do you just rotate your exfoliants?
I do still use it!!! Yesssss if I use a high percentage like a 2% thatâs all I will use for that week. So I wonât use the gentle glow recipe one at all that week. Just because I feel like 2% twice a week is enough exfoliation for my skin!
