  • Welcome to today's woodturning project. It is my first time to turn banksia pod. I expected it to be a bit thicker, however, in combination with some walnut wood I turned a nice lidded vessel. The Danish oil really made the colors pop.
    Hope you enjoy the video!

    Banksia pods have a beautiful internal structure. I've never turned one, but I used to collect them and cut them into longitudal slices that I stained and varnished.

    Banksia pods look amazing when turned, I must remember to collect some when I'm out and about, I see them everywhere but always forget to pick them up.

    That is a very unique piece of stock you turned....what surprises me is that a pod (seed-bearing fruit) can be turned at all! So....I read up on this topic and learned quite a bit. Your end project is beautiful and very nicely turned. Best wishes and be well.

    It's actually a cone not a pod - the hard bumps on it are seed pods that open to release the seeds. If you peel back the layer surrounding the pods there is fur underneath. All kids in the part of Sydney I grew up in the 70s knew this and we would pick them and peel to touch the lovely brown velvet inner layer ❤️

    Serious question: When you (and every other wood turner I've watched) bore out the piece with the Forstner bit, why do you use your hand to guide it? Is your hand more steady than the tailstock? Is there so much play that you need to steady it?
    I'm not challenging you. It just seems that the tailstock would be plenty stable by itself. Then again, I haven't touched a lathe since 1979, in wood shop class.
    I got a good grade on the lathe, BTW. ;-)

    Where does a Banksia Pod come from? This is totally awesome.

    • @LA-jq3ur
      @LA-jq3ur Před 3 lety +1

      Banksia are group of shrubs and trees that occur in Australia. They are more a cone than a pod with capsules containing the seeds. The cone protects the seeds from fire. Many banksias require fire to regenerate because the heat stimulates the capsules to open and release the seeds. The seeds then benefit from growing in the nutrient rich ash bed
