- Netflix released Lookism, an anime based on the long-running 2014 Korean Webtoon written by Park TaeJoon of the same name. Following the story of Daniel Park, an overweight high school kid, who discovers he has a second body, how the world treats him and the hijinks that ensue, is the core of the story. This video will discuss whether or not Netflix did a good job in adapting the original webtoon, or… if it just fell short.

I wonder why they changed DG charecter Design I mean he's still hot but I wonder why they changed an overall good design
bro I liked the video but please tell me the song name at the beginning of the video it sounds so good i keep replaying that part
the edit goes hard to man
I found it I'm just stupid lamo but loved your video
I really wish they adapted Zacks library date with Mira since that is when he gets character development. It made him go through the bullying he put others through, making him realize how terribly he’s treated Jiho
They did tho?
I wish they adopt those mini chapters like that Zacks library in season 2 tho
agreed!! it all happened too fast... the library date was indeed a game changer for his character development.
Jesus loves you
I think the Lookism anime is very underrated I really loved it.
same
It made me read the entire mango, all 424 chapters in just 3 days after finishing the anime..
@kaydenvortex1984 it's on 429 chapters now Lookism my 2nd favourite story ever
@@Luffy2Saucy time to fast pass once again i suppose
@kaydenvortex1984 nah just use the scans now it's on 431 chapters
After all the fighting, I wish they'd get back to some highschool stuff again. I'm rooting for my girl Zoe to be the one to end up with Daniel, her character development is great.
Zoe don't exist anymore, sorry.
@@matth1641 what happened to her?
@@babyunicorn7954 she's still in the story. If Jay was able to come back after being gone forever, Zoe can make a return. Though I feel like there's no reason for her to ever come back.
@@matth1641 The series shifted to action later on. heck, we don't even see Daniel's mom anymore, and the original premise has been muddled with little daniel basically not needing his other body anymore because he got fit solely for fighting.
@@orangeman3220 For sure, that's why I don't think there's really a reason for her to come back.
Honestly, the art style and character changes made in the anime are highkey better than what the webtoon contained, especially how all the female characters now actually look distinct from each other.
It’s actually really good, but the only criticism I have is that Big Daniel has blue eyes, because the story highlights how Daniel’s second body looks similar to little Daniel as he loses weight, so to give him blue eyes would be a slight issue as little Daniel in the anime also doesn’t have blue eyes.
True
its getting under my skin lol
I hadn't read the webtoon for Lookism and as an anime only, i really enjoyed it. It wasn't the best produced like some of the other shows but it did enough in the key moments for me to enjoy it. Im glad the song was great because it genuinely made me tear up and its been long since a show has done that, so it went up in score for me.
Also if you have read the amazing webtoon called 'Weak Hero', they recently released a live action Kdrama called 'Weak Hero Class 1' and it's really good. i don't usually watch Kdramas at all but because i was intruiged, i watched it and it blew me away. 2 great adaptations for Webtoons here!!
@@haroonp8842 You rlly should read the webtoon bro, its soo good
@@wman8771 ye i will do at some point, im currently reading Viral Hit which i believe is by the same author so I will read Lookism after that..eventho im sure people will tell me to read Lookism first but i dont care

@@haroonp8842 where can i watch the k drama?
i disagree abt the "the episode weakened the theory that jay is gay for daniel" point. just because jay saw daniel be nice to duke doesnt meant that his generosity wasnt fueled by his feelings. in both the webtoon and the anime, jay becomes interested in daniel once he stands up for his mom (but in jay's perspective he thought daniel was standing up for someone else's mom)
so from the very beginning jay has liked daniel for his kind and helpful spirit. so i disagree that him seeing daniel help ppl was reason enough for jay to be kind when it's more likely that daniel's kindness solidified jay's feelings and made him want to help him.
plus its not a theory that jay likes daniel, its stated very clearly during the arc where they fight ollie wang's goons that "jay likes daniel". there's no reason to read that and assume, "oh, but this means platonically, right?" bcs the reader already knows jay "likes" daniel bcs theyre friends. however, jay gives gifts, tries to keep his own sister away from daniel, and takes hits for daniel all the time and even changed his career path to medicine when daniel went into a coma.
thats when taehoon was like, "let me make it clear, jay LIKES daniel."
plus the newest chapter shows that jay is once again going into war to get daniel back bcs he not only cares for him as a friend, but because he likes him.
Exactly. Ptj comics even confirmed the crush on an instagram story.
This comment restored my reason to live.
@@eimearc4664 omg he did???? YEEEEEEEEEEEES I NEVER LOSE.
Idk, until we get an internal monologue from Jay regarding his feelings for Daniel, there’s plausibility that his love is platonic. PTJ has already included Darius as a gay character, so it’s not like PTJ doesn’t write gay characters. I personally think that Jay is gay for Daniel, just that PTJ gotta be way more obvious about it
@@omarhasan2254 normally i'd somewhat agree with you, except, jay is a character who quite literally never has an internal or external dialogue. there's a mini arc from his pov (with the dogs) and the entire thing is speech bubble/monologue free.
everything about jay is conveyed through his actions. why would his crush on daniel be any different? and jay's actions make it VERY obvious that he likes daniel.
The reason why the art style is different because PTJ art style is one of a kind. His art style more towards to realism manga (?). Like at the beginning of the webtoon, Park Hyungseok really look like Park Hyungseok irl, Deokhwa with Deokhwa irl, DG with GD, and so on for the countless irl person references.
But for the anime, the design should be works for all animator, 2D and even 3D. And it's for the good.
Yeah, I remember when the webtoon was just starting, and the (small) fanbase was always trying to figure out who was inspired by who...
For some it was obvious from the name, but others took some time, like Mary Kim for instance.

I really enjoyed the adaptation and it's actually what got me into reading the webtoon! Personally I hope that they don't cut out a lot of the "filler" arcs because they're some of my favorite parts of lookism
Imma be real...
When a certain real life rapper gets mentioned... I couldn't help but laugh my ass off bro it was crazy.
And all these posters on the wall in the dude's room, such a hilarious moment!

LOOKISM ANIMATION DESERVES MORE RECOGNITION 🙏 I watched and liked all your videos, thank you so much. I like how honest you are with this lookism animation review, telling what's good and what's lacking. I hope more people watch this specific video of yours, especially the readers who didn't try to watch it but say bad things about it. I hope they will give it a try because, overall, the animation adaptation is really great. And so I really do hope Studio Mir will see where they are lacking so they could improve their animation in the next season, which we are hoping for more of.
WE REALLY NEED MORE SEASON OF LOOKISM ANIMATION 😭
I honestly love the way they paced the anime. I stopped reading in like 2020 so going into the anime is basically forgotten everything about it and I think it did a great job breathing life into the characters
I legit lost 9 days of my life catching up to the webtoon and even buying the new chapters by downloading the app for the first time. I felt like I spent every day on meth staying up til 2 in the morning reading it until I collapsed.
Bro honestly it's easier to use pirated sites
Yea bro 💀 especially chapter 431 is intense
It felt refreshing to watch a real genuine Korean anime. I hope solo levelings production is like this
The only things I had a problem with was Zoe's hair being too long and how they said Vascos name. But overall I loved. But i cried Everytime i saw Vasco in 3d 😭😭😭😭
Frr like like changed how some characters looked like Zoe and Daniel 😭😭
Just out of curiosity, how did you think Vasco was pronounced? I've always thought it was said like that... like Vasco de Gama, you know?
However, depending on your Portuguese accent, it could be pronounced as (not exactly, but close to) "Basco", which could explain why some characters think he's named "Tabasco"...
@@randallflagg3700 wasn't it Tabasco just take out ta and swap the b with v? Vah sco and vah
@@aperson.a - For me it was pronounced the same way "Painkiller Jane" 's real name *Jane Vasco* is pronounced.
For reference, if you watch the trailer of the show on youtube, they say her name in the first 3 seconds.
(I discovered the character while reading the Punisher/Painkiller Jane crossover by Garth Ennis, on my quest to read everything with Ennis' Punisher in it)
Might depend on your native language or something
@@randallflagg3700 I thought it was with a v...
I'm liking it so far but my biggest gripe about it is definitely the art-style change. it was just so drastic. I love how modern lookism looks, and some of it's absolutely stunning panels, and I would've loved to see how it would look animated, but they chose a completely different art-style for whatever reason, I couldn't imagine how some of those stunning panels would look in the different art-style, and I was extremely disappointed at how some characters looked in the anime.
Tabasco- DG- Jay all weird
The changed Mary Kim and made her a dude? I hate that because Mary Kim as she is has relevance in the story.
VASCO
True
@@gg836 if you're talking about the blondie who rapped alongside Vin Jin, that isn't Mary at all. Just some irrelevant person to boost the fact that Vin Jiin had a friend group.
I loved the anime adaptation so much. I honestly kinda hope your prediction about season 2 is correct because ending on the introduction to Jake would be amazing (as if he's not already the main character in a few years worth of content lol), and I think it could actually lead well into a season 3, having season 2 end in such a way.
I'm really happy with how season 1 focused a lot on Duke's story, as he's very relatable for me, as a music performer who doesn't conform to society's weird standards of "beauty". I think he's a fantastic character so I'm happy he got highlighted a lot.
I was also worrying about how the misconceptions for newer fans would be, but overall, the series itself changed a lot, and people stuck with it regardless (as they were reading it or as it came out), so I think just how good the series is will hook people into continuing to follow the story.
It was good but the webtoon was more emotionally hitting
I think the anime brought many people into the webtoon, including me! I've never read 400+ chapters so fast in my life lmao
I genuinely love your videos and you’ve inspired me to try and make my own channel. I get excited every time you upload keep up the good work.
It was a good adaptation. But i am still thinking which part will they adapt because Lookism is so big with many arcs .
Looking forward to the future videos, I really enjoyed this one!!! I thought the anime was very well made so just seeing the original webtoon being adapted made me cheerful of the success that the anime will bring to ptj and awareness to such a great manhwa, definitely my favorite from what I've read. Episode 5 was also my favorite, I thought namsoo's reaction at the end was hilarious and I was glad to see Daniel's drip being appreciated without being censored it was great 👍 the added rings were also a nice touch as well.
hopefully well get a whole adaptation which would be insane
Great video! Congrats on 1k subscribers Logan well deserved!!
This is such a thorough analysis and video editing, I had to subscribe out of respect! Looking forward to your future Lookism content!
I loved it. Man it was so good. My 1 tiny worry (minuscule) is that he isn’t the only one who can transfer bodies by falling asleep. But the way they unravel that further might change my mind.
- me who watched the anime then tried to read the webtoon but lack the attention span to read
More videos! More videos! More videos!
Really enjoyed this video, can't wait for more ^^
Wow, I didn't think there would be someone who would analyze the anime and the comic so closely. That's pretty cool.
It was so good bro!
Need a full series of it ASAP!!
The only thing bad about this adaptation is that it took more than 3 years to animate 27 chapters. Lookism has 400 chapters lol. It would take 30+years to get to the latest chapters
thats depressing to hear 😭😭 especially since the latest chapters give huge transformations. but also i think if they released much more episodes in a season while getting rid of potential fillers, it could make things a lot more smoothly. also each chapter is not that long and having longer length episodes would help with the longer arcs if necessary. a lot of animes tend to take years to finish anyways.
thanks for the work
i love it i need a 2nd season now
Dude your so underrated you deserve more love
Your video is very well done and you have a calm demeanor
i LOVE your videos!! keep up the good work dude!
This is a great video! I have no idea how I came across the series (didn't know anything about it), but I really liked it.
I really hope we get a season 2 and beyond the Webtoon just gets better and better. Though it does annoy me when they cut so much content
I enjoyed the video! You gained a new sub:)
Great video
BRUH how did i not know you made a video sorry I am late great video tho😭
what an amazing video!! you def deserve more subs
Great review and breakdown of the series and how it adapted the manhua👍🏿
Well, looks like you got a new subscriber! I loved the anime; like you I wasn't a big fan of certain changes
(the reason Crystal doesn't like Big Daniel; Daniel was scared because the previous "slave" had a terrible day following her notoriously tyrannical "master" all day long while she was shopping, having the carry ungodly amounts of stuff, and Crystal Choi just assumed he was relieved because she was fat & ugly)
but in the long term, those changes aren't really a Big Deal©
I liked how they gave us more Jin Ho Bin/Vin Jin scenes early on, because PTJ revealed that his number one regret about *Lookism* was that he wanted to include him and tell his story earlier...
And since I'm a Judo nerd, I was a big fan of Vin Jin since the start, back when everyone (not without reasons) disliked him for being an arrogant bully.
But I don't know, the glasses mystery had me hooked from the start ^^
And Big Daniel, yeah I thought he looked more like the protagonist from *Viral Hit* , Yoo Ho bin (no relation) than his early self, and Vasco's appearance didn't exactly make me cheer, and Mira looks so much better in the manhwa...
When it comes to Eli Jang, it's fine with me that he wasn't introduced alongside Vasco and Vin Jin when Big Daniel showed up like in the manhwa, since he doesn't have a big role until much further on, it might have confused new viewers no familiar with the source material, like "so this guy was introduced like he was going to be one of the main players, and we just saw him give some bad haircuts?"
Unlike in the webtoon, he wasn't even the one who have Daniel his infamous _Kim Jong Un haircut_ that made Mira stare at him in horror and earned him a beating by Zack Lee...
I don't know how much censor impacted that particular plot thread BTW, when PTJ wrote this chapter he probably didn't expect his story to become a big hit, with a live action & animated adaptations, etc etc
I know PTJ is a South Korean, not a North Korean, so it might make a big difference, but I don't know enough about Korea in general to make a proper guess.
Sorry about the essay, much love from France, keep up the good work!
RF
As someone who's since binged all of Lookism on webtoon because of the anime, it was a very good adaptation!
Especially because the art style of the adapted chapters were, quite frankly, god awful haha
It really isn't I've been reading lookism since it first came out, and it's just not very good especially when you get to choater 431 with the whole workers gang. The anime ain't gonna work.
@@Costenosin terms on selling me on a manhwa I've avoided for years, it did its job well. I went and checked the thing it was adapting, so I think that was a success.
I agree that a lot will need to happen to be able animate the upcoming fight scenes. But for at least a good while longer the anime can concentrate of the Lookism aspect of it all before it needs to become a Gang war story.
That said I really doubt it'll get a season 2.
@@giraffe7604 it won't unfortunately
I started series loving it but quit when it was just fighting now i dont even remember where i left and might go back to reading it again
I found it to be much more of a story, which is what lookism was at the start. It feels entirely different from modern lookism, it's like a story retold essentially. It doesn't scream lookism to me, doesn't even remind me all that much of old lookism but I liked it as something seperate.
already watched it twice, shit's mad good.
I honestly thought it wouldn’t be good but as soon as I watched it I loved it! it felt like reading lookism all over again lol
Maybe they'll reinsert some of the cut scenes in a flashback.
The first season ending in the concert would seem like to me; from being bullied to being successful and besting those that look down on you which best suits Daniel and Duke.
you definitely need to talk about the DG design change. spoilers:
I feel like DG’s design change make it to obvious that he is James Lee due to his red hair. The first second watchers see the panel of James Lee, there will definitely be a obvious connection between the two especially since DG is shown as a mysterious character with high importance which makes the reveal less major especially for such a important character.
The only thing I didn't like was it being so short, I thought it would have AT LEAST the typical 12 episodes
So far Lookism is actually the best manhwa adaptation!
As an anime only, the artstyle and character designs are 10x better than the original source material. I tried reading it afterwards and just couldn't get used to it.
Im so disappointed how they skip the GOOD PARTS and thats not zoe GIRL HAS SHORT HAIR WHY DID THRY GIVE HER LONG?!
I think the only thing that annoyed me was just how much vasco tatto changed it didn't quite seem right idk that might just be me
we need season 2!!
Ive only watched the anime, so i thought it would also focus on duke in s2, but i guess its more about the fighting aspect. I really wanted to see redemption to his ending in season 1 because i felt disappointed seeing him fail to impress everyone
The anime got me into lookism and now ive caught up to Lookism and started reading viral hit as well so I would say for me the anime was amazing
Hope season 2 cover all the scenes
I hope that they keep jay as a consistent character instead of forgetting abt him like the webtoon
They didn’t forget about him! He’s back
He's literally a part of Daniel's crew rn
Dude this intro!
I THOUGHT IT WAS GONNA BE BAD cos of the art style and some of the expressions BUR I WAS SO SHOCKED AND IT WAS SO GOOD LIKE THE END BRO IT WAS SO LOKE OMG THE SOBG WAS BOP
After reading some of the manga, I kind of hope they tone down the animation for the second season if it means animated more episodes because the series is really good and it has a lot of chapters it can crank out. Getting 8 episodes per season will have us waiting years to complete the manga lol.
this thing literally made me speedrun the lookism weebtoon, like seriously i'm out of chapters to read xD
(also the lookism ''anime'' it's tecnically not an anime cuz /anime/ is what japanese animation is called, and the lookism animation is korean as far as I know. that also why some stuff may be different than regular anime, like the op cuz it is kpop instead of jpop probably.
but obviusly calling it anime it's easier)
my biggest complaint to the anime was the punches and sound effects. nothing had feeling behind it when they got kicked or punched it was so wimpy yet they got bloodied up thats the only thing that was bad
It was well paced, but they’ll have to pick up the animation for future parts. Overall good VA on English and Japanese dubs. Good music choice. It was done well but it needs a bit more to be great
I really like the Anime, I stopped reading Lookism because I found it too Boring and bland, but when I watched the anime I found out that it was actually good
What was that sound effect at the verdict X)
Bro it's so underrated.
I think the anime is alright. It made me pick up the WEBTOON again which I haven’t read since 2018 just so I can compare it. I like the WEBTOON more, I know the art style in the early chapters aren’t the best (compare to now, all the characters pretty much got a major glow up with how amazing the art is now) but I enjoy how dark and goofy the WEBTOON is. I really enjoy the realistic facial expression in the webtoon too.
I loved the action scenes I was so hyped
2:11 is that the video song of 'Like that'?
Whenever a webtoon gets an anime adaptation they rarely ever get a 2nd season, don't get your hopes up to high.
I read the comic on webtoon there’s a lot A LOT of fillers so they did great with the anime in my opinion
A Dumb comment, the art style did get an upgradae cause ptj did say they started animating three years earlier? so there's no way they can predict how the art would change drastically.
Idk why some people didn´t like it I though it was a really good refresher for anyone that´s been following since the begin
the anime is good and i watched it first and enjoyed. i will say it does not convey emotional aspects as well which i think maybe to the pacing and toning down of the more raw elements of the webtoon. i have no idea how it will follow the main story arc if they continues as it gets progressively more gritty in concepts and subject manner.
*Okay people really tend to overlook the chapter where yui gets her face rocked by her abusive BF, that she was going to cheat on. That's going to be a hard thing to adapt*
pretty sure webtoon didnt incldue the song, the addition of it in the adapt makes it so much better
lookism latest ch are very very diff from the start, i wanna see the lookism ch now being released in anime but that gonna be like in 3 to 4 seasons
whens the next season ?
Say what you want about the anime, nobody can tell me the song at the end didn't slap
I don't think people would love all the fighting but they would love Daniels transformation
After finishing the animation where should I start reading??
it just feels sad cuz if lookism does get more seasons, non webtoon readers might think its not for them :( although thats okay, its just that... I really this whole thing, slice of life to action..
I'm also glad it was animated, cause if it wasn't for that, we won't get a hard OST like Fly Up
It was definitely missing a lot of details. But they got the main idea of the BEGINNING of the webtoon down atleast, I’m guessing since the webtoon had so much going on, they made it seem like a simple, slice of life?? I think, I definitely o recommend those who enjoyed the anime read the webcomic, it’s so good and it’s definitely so much more. I did not really like the anime art style, I don’t know it just wasn’t what I had in mind but then again I can’t picture the webcomic animation yk, for Daniel I DIDNT really like the blue eyes, it does make him stand out because everyone else doesn’t have blue eyes except a few, but I really liked Daniels brown eyes.
Duke solos! Theyre doing him in the manhwa he needs more screen time!!!!
I just finished watching it and it was pretty good!
what is that song at the beginning of the video it goes hard
Can't wait for them to adapt te 4 major crews, shit just randomly turns into a shounen anime.
As someone that never read the webcomic prior to the animated series, The lookism anime (Apari3ncias in spanish)'s first 2 and a half episodes looked stiff and I almost dropped it, but something told me to keep going and after the 3rd episode, I truly enjoyed everything about it that pushed me into the webcomic and I'm having fun reading it tbh.
But let me tell u something, THE ANIME DID 100000 TIMES BETTER THAN THE COMIC, there's a lot of scenes on the webcomic that lacked a little bit of more human touch or logic into certain scenes, like on the last episode of the anime, when the producer approached the MC, he straight up rejected the offer because he did it all for his friend that was the one that was seeking for an opportunity like that, whilst on the comic he started to have doubts and asking questions about if he should take it, ignoring the fact that everything he's doing is due to that cool little dude on his side, and suddenly when the friend is literally fucking sad and getting away of everyone because MC made him feel that he was going to accept it because instead of saying no he kept asking questions about how is it gonna work and so, he says no and goes to make that dude feel good because "oh lol true i have a friend there".
The animated adaptation has a lot of potential, I want it to keep going, it's a lot of fun, a million times more human and you can easily identify with all of the characters in a much warmer way than reading the comic.
Edit: also the latin american spanish dub was fucking amazing tbh
Eh the comic is way better than the anime 💀
I absolutely loved the Anime adaption, felt that it did the original material justice, and didn't fall down the trap of adding filler in to stretch story lines out.
But when I rewatched the story I started to realize something about the Webtoon that made me very sad; the Webtoon is suffering, the earlier chapters were creative, unique and engaging, but recent chapters have been repetitive and terrible abandoning what made the story engaging and without any intervention soon, it may end up fizzling away.
As such I think the biggest issue facing the anime is the future of the Webtoon itself, the current arc focused on the violent confrontations, the gangs and the workers has gone on far too long and in my opinion is actively sabotaging the Webtoon's future. if this content drags out much longer it will cause a significant portion of the fan base to drop the series (including those who have already dropped it) as it's a complete abandonment of the original plot, which is what drew a lot of original readers in.
Now if it stands as it is, and Netflix adapt these arcs in their entirety, there will be at minimum of a season of purely this violent storytelling that has little to do with the original story.
What the danger with all this is, is that this content is nothing new, its the same junk that has been rehashed a million times in other anime and Webtoons, and even other Park TaeJoon works have gone down this path where it's all too 'samey' and the content blurs so much that you could easily forget which series you're reading. I think this has a lot to do with TaeJoon setting up a studio and outsourcing a lot of his work to other creators, abandoning what is unique for a cash grab by following the trends of violence for violence's sake. This will drive away readers/viewers who were viewing the content for the mystery, the fantasy/scifi angle with the body switching, it will drive away viewers who want story with any depth.
If the story doesn't go back on the original path, and netflix adapts it as is it's really likely that the show will fail. I can only hope that before that happens, they get the parts of the story that actually mattered adapted into the anime.
I just wish someone did an orv adaptation
Anime doesn't do 16 episodic runs (that's KDrama/ though it would be great if they did) if anything short animes tend to be 10 - 12 episodes or longer ones being 20 - 24 episodes though Netflix has its own way of doing things and will tend to drop 8 - 12 episodes for it's first season depending on the series.
