    CTA signs & tommy skillethead! Again, the details are amazing. Really "feels" like chicago!

      Thanks! It’s really those sorts of Easter eggs and small touches that are the most fun and offer sense of place. I’d had to make sure to include an homage to Tom and WGN. He’s always been my favorite weather guy.

    I not only live in Chicago, I'm also an retired city employee of 38 years (CDOT) who has worked in every neighborhood of the city. I must say great work! By the way, Finkle Steel is now located on the Southside near 93rd and University Avenue after moving off Cortland Ave.
    Not to far from where the Cottage Grove bus turns around at 95th Street.

      Steven - thanks a lot, really appreciate it!! My one regret when I lived in the city proper (back when Finkl was on Goose Island) is that I didn't go more often to watch the folks there make steel. There were a couple of times I was biking around there and got to enjoy the arc furnace from the always-open garage door off the street. I'd be almost positive they don't allow visitors like that on their new site (plus who the hell would be just walking by down there!!). It's too bad, that was really fun to watch.

    Excellent job painting the grain elevator. Take a look at Tichy #7019 (Small Water Tank) and Walthers City Water Tower. Perhaps one of those items will work with slight modification.
    How about a billboard for Marshall Field's or Frango mints?

    • @ChicagoCrossingRR
      @ChicagoCrossingRR  Před rokem +1

      Hi David, I totally agree, thanks! The City Water tower has the closest shape, and it's easy enough to scratchbuild or modify the legs so that will probably be the strategy! Love the billboard suggestions - they end up being wonderful 'easter eggs' for people in the know. I put up a Celozzi-Ettelson Chevrolet billboard on the side of a building (where you always save more money!!) and a Marshall Field's add would make a lot of sense given the time period.

    As someone who is from Chicago, I wish to say, well done. All buildings you mentioned in this update are all well known to me and you have done a nice job of doing exactly what you wanted to do - create a general association of your model to the real thing. From Finkl to the small bus signs, it all looks legit. The grain elevator looks amazing but my favorite is the tribute to Cassidy Tire. That building is (was) an icon of Chicago and has appeared in probably a dozen movies over the years, it was a real shame to see it get replaced by yet another condo building last year. But hey, that's what we have modeling for, create your own world however you want to see it. Well done once again.

      Thanks much and high praise as I really enjoy your channel (and expertise on the CNW). Certainly a shame watching some of these historic icons disappear. Happily the only demolition that occurs on my layout is mostly me being a klutz with these tiny models.

    Love the weathering on the grain elevator! Another way to do this would have been to print out paper wallpapers and glue them on - requires quite a bit of work though with photo-editing software (as I've done it before and it takes quite a bit of time!).

    Great layout and video. I love what you have done in this smaller space. The level of detail is amazing. It gives me inspiration for my own layout. A recommendation if you don't mind, the camera is a bit shaky at times, especially in the closer shots. Some form of stabilization would definitely up the production level. I don't know if holding the camera differently is better, or finding some software to stabilize the images after recording is better? Keep up the good work.

    • @ChicagoCrossingRR
      @ChicagoCrossingRR  Před rokem

      You calling me old and shaky??😂 Not to worry, production values are apt to increase over time. Helpful to know that folks are sufficiently interested to either watch the thing through or at least until motion sickness sets in.

    • @pacificcoastminiatures
      @pacificcoastminiatures Před 10 měsíci

      @@ChicagoCrossingRR I agree, you should consider using a tripod or perhaps a gimbal when shooting video - will help a lot in reducing the shakiness and allow us to see the amazing detail you've added. 😊But yes, I am watching the whole thing despite almost getting motion sickness.

    • @ChicagoCrossingRR

      Basically airbrush/sponge painting and washes/oils - same as for the tower described in the video. Start with an umber base coat sponged on for texture and shadow.
