The Monkees Live in Japan / October 1968

  • In late 1968, The Monkees toured Australia and Japan. In Japan, one of the concerts was filmed (most likely during the two day, three-concert stay at Budokan Hall in Tokyo on October 3 and 4, 1968) and later broadcast on Japanese television. The audio recording and video footage, however, has never been officially released. The audio (straight from the video) does exist as a bootleg (which can be heard here, complete with Japanese voice introductions before each song), but the video footage is presumed lost or destroyed. Monkees archivist Andrew Sandoval has confirmed that multiple attempts have been made to find the missing video footage. "It was definitely broadcast and there has been communication with TBS [Tokyo Broadcasting System) in Japan to retrieve anything they had," he wrote on Facebook in 2017. "We asked many times and have been told they have nothing. Unless they made a film print of the video, it is unlikely it survived."
Please note there are breaks between each track.
Micky Dolenz: vocals/drums; Davy Jones: vocals/tambourine/drums/bass; Michael Nesmith: vocals/guitar; Peter Tork: vocals/bass/banjo/keyboards. The Floral provided instrumental support during the individual Monkee solo spots (Mike's "Johnny B. Goode," Davy's "Gonna Build a Mountain," and Micky's "I Got a Woman").

This is better than their 1967 Live Album. They sound like a real band here. Give the Monkees credit for singing and performing live. They should have been given more credit for playing their own instruments, and producing some of the best music out there. RIP Davy and Peter.

@@marlalabelle1332 It is. By leaps and bounds. They had really grown as a band, the sound is good and I love the song selection of the 1968 set (wish the missing track could be recovered.)
That said-If you hear the recordings from the Rhino Handmade CD set of those 1967 shows, they sound much better (than Live 1967). For some reason, Rhino mucked about with the sound when they made Live 1967 and basically ruined it. The actual undoctored recordings that Rhino Handmade released sound pretty good.
But these 1968 Japan recordings, bootleg or not, sound even better.
There is even a vinyl version out there! :)

All of them were amazing and versatile. Davy was surprisingly good with the bass and he did an admirable job when he would get behind the drums. Micky was a terrific drummer. Mike carries off the guitar work all by himself and Peter was one talented dude.

      You may have already found all this out at this point but if you ever need to defend against those who say they couldn't and didn't play their own instruments or write their own stuff on their first two albums;
-They weren't allowed to play on the records because of all the other stuff they had to do. But they were told they would be able to when they first formed.
-Through a lot of fighting for it Mike did write Sweet Young thing on their 1st album
-Similar fighting Mike wrote Mary, Mary on their 2nd album
-With both songs through fighting for it Mike was able to have Peter come in to play on the tracks, though Mike still wasn't allowed to play. (After they took control for Headquarters: the 3rd album, the song writing and playing on the tracks of course became a main stay)
-Many bands and solo artists at the time didn't write or play their own stuff but The Monkees were targeted because of how they were formed.
-Mike and Peter could and did master their instruments as they were musicians and in bands before The Monkees. Mike played Guitar and Peter can pretty much play everything. Micky knew Guitar but for their tours was taught drums by Peter. Davy might have already known how to use Tambourine and Maracas(unsure), but did have to learn Guitar and drums for touring.

@@bigdoubleu117 Michael did not have to fight to get Sweet Young Thing or Mary, Mary on the albums - his contract included having two songs on each album (Papa Gene's Blues on the 1st and The Kind of Girl I Could Love on the 2nd being the other ones) - he just wasn't allowed to play on them but did arrange for Peter to play as part of the general ensemble of players on some of his tracks.

The Monkees, or at least Mike still isn't recognized for writing any songs on the first 2 albums or any of the 4 members playing on the tracks of the first 2 albums.
People usually use the false blanket statement that they didn't write any or play any instruments on the 1st 2 albums.

    • @garyhill2740
      @garyhill2740 Před rokem +3

On the "overlook the audio quality" .....
For a 1960's live recording that isn't from the original master, hasn't been doctored, and is genuinely live, this is actually quite good.
Most of the live recordings you hear by popular bands (especially from the 60's and 70's) are overdubbed or completely recreated in the studio.
There are several 1960's recordings of Monkees concerts as well as live tracks from various projects they did which are genuinely live without a net.
Even later concert recordings (80's and beyond) with a supporting band present the Monkees as featured players, are in real time, and are typically mixed and edited but largely unaltered.
To me, they make the point that the Monkees were the real deal pretty well.

I wouldn't worry about the "Hall of Fame".
It isn't like it's a real institution for recognition of artists based on criteria like genuine talent, accomplishment, and legacy.
It is simply a privately run business where Werner and the people that own it recognize the performers they like, and ignore the ones they don't.
Not being in the RRHOF because some private club doesn't approve of you doesn't mean much.
Sad, really. They could have grown the RRHOF into something legit had they wanted to. Instead, they prefer for it to be BS. Oh well......

It makes me sad that Peter left the band that year. They sounded fantastic live. I think in head the monkees (especially Peter, being the most invested in drugs and being the hippie of the group) wanted to convey this message. Something about what they were going through as a band, something about the Vietnam war and something most people didn’t understand because, let’s be honest, they were all high as hell when they did head. And I think Peter left after the flop of head cause no one got what they were trying to say. Probably still labelling them as pre Fab Four and all the other stupid crap they used to say about them. I believe Peter was gonna form a band after the monkees with his girlfriend but I don’t think they ever recorded anything? Maybe he was hoping with his new band they could be known for being something politically (y’know like a peace and love band. Be more like cream, jimi Hendrix experience). Peter later said he wished they didn’t do head, and wished they could’ve done a season 3 of the monkees show. I personally love head, it’s one of my favourite films, so I don’t wish for it not to exist. I do, however, wish there was a season 3 of the monkees show. I would’ve wanted it to be more experimental like how they were if head (but no as extreme as head lmao). Kinda like frodis caper or the fairytale episode. I wouldn’t wanted it to be the “Davy falls in love” episodes. My point is that it’s sad that they ended so quickly. It seemed like they worked so hard to get where they were. To play their own instruments, write their own songs, etc and then when they finally got there they lost that energy that was once there in the early days. I’m glad they did some reunions. And I’m so glad that their story didn’t turn out worse. I mean I’m glad that each monkee didn’t end up like Brian Jones, jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin etc. There story could’ve gone a lot worse but it could’ve gotten better. Rest in peace Davy and Peter💔 Thank you for making me smile everyday.

groovyflowerchild. It’s sad because right here they are really in their prime. I believe if Head had been an album of all self written songs by all four guys. That could have been their sgt peppers. Songs like You and I (instant replay) , Mommy and daddy, with the addition of Cirlcle Sky and do I have to do this all over again. It could have been an amazing album. That would have put them back on top IMO. Instead of focusing on a trippy movie it could have been a trippy album instead. Also Peter would have most likely stayed in the band if that had happened. This is just my opinion though.

Peter did about 8 months in prison. He had spent all his Monkee money by then. Thankfully, he was welcomed back. I forget which one said it, but said, "The Monkees will always be these same 4 guys". I respect that. They stuck with it until the end. Sure, some quit. But they came back. Sure, Micky and Davy did shows with other musicians filling in the 2 vacant spots...but those 2 never claimed to be Monkees. Until the end, (only Micky is left now), The Monkees were Peter, Micky, Mike and Davy. Much Respect from me for that.

I know they couldn't hear themselves, so clarkseville ain't great but there is some great kernels here, sorry Nez but I think it is Tork's work that works. Davy's Free is a great version, and you get excited when it almost takes off, could have become something just beyond. The daydream background was what should have been on the final record, just cleaned. Obvious from cuddly toy, dolenz's backing instincts should have given more heed early on. Salesman I believe should be considered a major progenitor of the blues brothers. The offset beatlesque keyboard is also perfect. Nice is just strange enough not to be trite. Listen to that chop on Mary! Clean up the vocals? No way, it is way too much fun! Cyndi is an unexpected treat. Why is Trk not fixing johnnybgood? Oh well, Nez could have used a lil help. Mountain is mind blowing! Good to me sounds like today's group Dead South, too funny! The breakdown is hilarious, I have to begin to be thankful that even the monkees had to pay their dues wih hours of absurd playlists. Stepping Stone almost is clearly become a Trk playground and could have gone so many ways, so many ideas! The ascent into chaos is perfect. What treasure trove.

The Rhino handmade box set of the 1967 summer tour recordings presents them in much better form than the "Live 1967" album (which actually sounds pretty awful-they tampered with it and ruined it).
The Spokane, Washington show (half of which was used on Live 1967 in buggered form) is so good I've always wondered why they didn't just release the whole show in its entirety and unmolested as a live album: "Monkees Live in Spokane-1967".
As good as that one is, this Japan 1968 show is completely superior. My favorite Monkees live, goofy announcers that won't shut up and all. What's there is great and sounds good. Great track list.
I don't know why they focused so much on finding the broadcast tape.
I'd rather they find a master of the concert from BEFORE they dubbed it down for the broadcast and added the Talkie Twins.

Video tape and film: If tape, it wasn't uncommon to reuse videotape. After nothing was done with it for a year or two after being shown on TV... or whenever, it was likely reused or discarded. The Monkees' star quickly faded not long after this. They were suddenly old hack. Similar if it was committed to film. Unless something was done with it right away, there was no sense in keeping it around. It was shown on Japanese TV and quickly forgotten about. Served its purpose, then reused or discarded.

I wasn't their "usual audience" myself. I was older and into other more "adult" groups, but HEAD caught my attention and, from there, i grew to respect their creativity and the music they themselves created (as opposed to the obvious hits).
