It's always good to see a true winner be given his Due and be declared Winner with the correct time of all 4 quarters of that race. The Race Track "Know It Alls" just couldn't/wouldn't admit they'd Screwed The Pooch on that one

I was 14 when Secretariat won the triple, and I was not the least bit interested in horse racing then. But the news coverage burned Secretariat's image into my memory so indelibly that when the movie came out the sight of his blue and white mask took me back. As an adult, I have now paid closer attention to Secretariat's achievement, and I am deeply moved by the video of his victory at Belmont. It strikes me now as a moment outside of time, one that occurred during my lifetime.

He mentions Farma Way, who ran Pimlico in 1:52.55. Also Riva Ridge ran 1:52 2/5 at Aqueduct. They were both 4 year olds. Secretariat ran 1:53 at Pimlico as a 3 year old. It’s thought that thoroughbreds don’t fully mature until they’re 4-5 years old. Unfortunately, we’ll never know because he retired at 3, but most likely he would have beaten both of those times had he raced at 4 years old.

@@JRobbySh What you say is "Likely" true, but it falls into the Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda categories.
Sham was an excellent Horse with a whole .bunch of Heart, Ability, Talent and he would have carried into Legend, all 3 Triple Crown races and done it easily.
His one & Only Failing was that he was up against A Miracle Horse.
I almost feel sorry for Sham but once again "The Luck O The Draw" sealed his fate. Sham had it all, but that simply wasn't Enough to get the job done.
I am Sad he was born into a colt crop that would face The Horse For The Ages and Lose as he and so many wonderful Equine Athletes were destined to do.
Finishing Second to Secretariat was no mean feat, as all Horsemen and Thoroughbred Race Aficionados well know, and had Sham been born one year later, there would have been 2 Back To Back Triple Crown Winners.
I regret Sham's being Foaled at the wrong time, But have to admire his Heat and "Will To Win". I'll also admit freely that had not Sham been in The Pack, Secretariat would still have Won, but his wins would not have won so Spectacularly....Most Especially in The Belmont. & it's most unfortunate that his owners Over Extended his Will To Win & Ruined A Wonderful Horse.
Like Secretariat, Sham was "A Horse For The Ages and he has my eternal Admiration and Respect....Against Big Red, Sham just couldn't "Get It Done"....
"Almost" was as close as Sham could get.
      And SADLY SO

@@dwightcurrie8316 Well said, Sham was such a gallant runner with as much heart (figuratively, literally) as Red. He literally ran himself ragged at Belmont trying to keep pace and him nudging ahead in the backstretch as if to say “let’s go Red! I’m with you!” Then the unexplainable occurred as we all know. Both horses are legends to me.

Every now and then I think about certain sports records that will never be broken. Right off the bat (no pun intended) because two are in the same sport, but one is Cal Ripken’s consecutive games played record and the other is Cy Young’s complete game pitched record.
I also have a hard time believing that Secretariat’s Belmont time will ever be broken. Unless I’m mistaken, over the last 50 years the closest any horse has gotten to Secretariat’s time was Easy Goer in 1989. He ran it in 2:26. Two full seconds slower. Again, unless I’m mistaken one second equals 6 lengths, so theoretically Secretariat would have beaten Easy Goer (the horse with the second fastest time ever) by 12 lengths.

This nerd MC doesn't understand horseracing/track records, no 2 races/tracks are alike. Amazing how many horse-people still don't get it. Secretariat 's triple crown races are the greatest 3 races of THE TRIPLE CROWN, doesn't mean Sec is the greatest racehorse ever. Allen jerkins said it himself, He(Secretariat) LOST 4 RACES, so who can say he's undoubtedly the greatest?

He lost his first race when he got creamed at the start and almost fell. He lost two when sick. One race he won but got bumped back to 2nd for interference and he lost one when woefully under trained filling in for Riva Ridge. The race that stands out for me was the Marlboro Cup when he set a record for a mile and an eighth after being sick and only having four workouts beforehand.

@Andrew Rawson I'm 72 now but during my Misspent youth I followed racing stables back & forth all across America. I worked Standard breds at the tracks, broke Thoroughbred Colts & got them ready for the Track, Rode in Pickup Rodeos, worked Rough Stock.Hired out short term to break colt crops of varying degrees of quality and Breed.
In short, if you could do it to or on a Horse, I could come close to doing everything that was legal and not downright Creepy to a Horse. During those years I learned a lot and saw some Magnificent Horses and figured I'd seen it all. Then Came Big Red and all that shit I thought I knew went right out the window. I had already seen a bunch of "Good" horses with the talent, ability and force of Will to be a winner. I've never seen, nor do I expect to ever see again the Magnificence that was embodied in Secretariat. He was the horse that every Owner, Trainer & Groom dreams about laying their hands own,but at the same time knew they never would be so fortunate.
I'm a Horseman, but far from an Authority, and after all my Going On, all I can honestly say is ...Secretariat was the Damndest Horse I've ever been fortunate enough to see "Do His Stuff", and Do It So Magnificently. No way I could go to see The Belmont, but I could watch it on TV in my home. When Red made the turn for home I wondered who was doing all the screaming in my house, then I found myself jumping up and down on my sofa yelling "Look At That Beautiful Son Of A Bitch Run!" with tears rolling down my cheeks. I cried freely knowing I would never ever witness such a thing as I saw happen that day. There will be great Horses to come and go, but the like of Secretariat we will never see again.
