It’s obviously not a diss, Nate respects Em and he was literally praising him on his last interview, people just love reaching and stretching lyrics because they’re obsessed with drama
He was not praising him in his last interview. Actually he only said top 5 May be number 1. He's not gonna deny his talent as a rapper. However I have spent a lot of time with friends and there are many lines in this song directed at Em. The T and A line is a weak reference but there are many. Like Knox pointed out there's rhymes within rhymes and if you know Eminem past work you and took the time to break down this song you would hear the references. Like shoot you out of the sky like the punchlines you are not landing. Kamikaze is a plane from world war. The line bout the funeral is reference to everyone saying Em kills rappers lime Nail in the coffin diss to Jarule. The line about can of gasoline all over your self esteem references Forgot about Dre ... 3sorcially since kamikaze was literally Eminem doing a whole album of how he's better then everyone in the rap game today. There's a lot more and many will choose not to even give ur any thought and that's fine. But in the interview you claim he praised Eminem he also talked bout how he loves watching rap battles , he knows the art of hip hop. He does respect Eminem for his amazing skills and always have him props so the fact that Eminem would call him a clone is not cool. As for whst Knox said bout Nate would come straight with a diss if he was going to diss Eminem. Well Nate replied the same way Em first took shots at him. The name of the song is Returns, he is returning fire, like the line about these bullets form in my mind and come out my mouth , Em has a line saying rap gods spit lyrical bullets. I'm stop now even tho I haven't even scratched the surface.

I know hip hop, I know Eminem from when he first put out music and I know Nate. This isn't naive speculation it's actual time put into dissecting which I love to do. I get others will refuse to see what they think would be impossible cuz Eminem is so "amazing" and why would anyone dare say anything against him. As a former hardcore fan, I know his talent and skill, just as I know Nate's this song is extremely complex.

But I also think that was him kind of nudging Em and saying your punchline didn’t land, everyone can see I’m not just some Recovery clone of you. But that still doesn’t make it a diss, it’s just him saying that’s not true and with this song that’s exactly what I’m showing.

NF never really responded to the Em diss on social media or otherwise. Now he drops his new album The Search with a song titled Returns and the reference to Eminem is just as subtle as Eminem's reference to NF. Keep in mind that both of these guys are excellent lyricists and aren't going to be forthright necessarily with what they're talking about when they're taking shots, if you will.
So now let's talk about the lyrics in the song Returns which I believe reference Eminem.
"Pushing forward, look, I can't ignore it
There ain't no I in team, but drop the T and A"
I believe what NF is saying here is that he's pushing forward but he can't ignore the mention of him in the song Ringer by Eminem. He goes on to say that there ain't no I in team but if you drop the t and a, the only thing that's left of the letters e m. A lot of people refer to Eminem as Em.
Some people will take the next two lines and say that it does not refer to Eminem because he uses the word "me" twice, which is the letters e and m reversed.
"Sometimes, if I'm being honest, feels like it's only me
No defeat, notably, better have it right if you're quoting me"
I disagree that he would be using those letters in the word me instead. He's too much of a Lyricist to do that without talking about reversing it. But let's go on to exam the next couple of lines which make it more evident that he's talking about Eminem.
"Write my name on your hit list, it might be the last time you wrote something"
I believe here NF is referencing the song Ringer from Eminem. The song included a hit list of different rappers that he was attacking.
"Rip that cocky smile right off your face for thinking you're close to me"
First of all, remember that the word ringer is used to reference somebody who looks or acts similar to someone else. And in the song Ringer, Eminem says that NF is like a recovery clone of him. Here I believe NF is saying that I'll rip that cocky smile right off of your face for thinking you're close to me as a response to Em saying that NF was his clone. Eminem's Kamikaze album also has a song called Not Alike.
"Grab a can of gasoline, light it all over your self-esteem"
Now let's go back to the song Forgot about Dre by Dr. Dre featuring Eminem. In this song Eminem's first verse includes the following line:
"And when the cops came through
Me and Dre stood next to a burnt down house
With a can full of gas and a hand full of matches
And still weren't found out"
In NF's verse I believe he's referencing back to this song where Eminem was featured and was talking about holding a can full of gas. I believe NF is saying to take that gas and pour it all over your self-esteem.
Here's the next line:
"Selfishly, watching y'all helplessly pretend you're on my planet
Shoot you out of the sky like you're punchlines, you are not landing"
Eminem's album is called Kamikaze. Kamikaze is defined as: (in World War II) a Japanese aircraft loaded with explosives and making a deliberate suicidal crash on an enemy target. So NF says he is going to shoot him out of the sky like punchlines he's not landing. If you shoot a kamikaze pilot out of the sky, he won't land on you and kill you…he's not landing, like his punchlines.
So taking into consideration that all of these things were within a few lines of each other in the song, I feel like this is definitely a reference to Eminem. if it had been just one or two of these, that would be one thing, but it was all of these references together that really makes me believe that NF was referencing Eminem. However, I do not believe that this was a personal attack toward Eminem but rather a respectful battle rap style response.
Every one of those I have written about in different reactions, good to see someone put everything together in one collection of evidence. I doubt it’s a diss, but strongly believe it’s at LEAST a reference or call-out.

Everything he says can be linked to mm Recovery album from start to finish and other of EMs songs also like screws are loose need EM tightened. Em said yeah I gotta couple of screws loose, but know worse then what's going on in your parents bedroom! And the HOPE YOU LIKE IT! that EM has said a lot in songs. Definitely RETURNS to recovery clone.
Nate even says in one of his other songs how he wanted to be a rapper ever since his mom bought him a dvd of 8mile. He ain’t dissing Em. People stretching and looking for drama where there ain’t none.

Nate hasn't really talked a lot or flexed about money in his stuff so I think the "NF's returns", relating to him making money off of his raps is a bit far reached.
And I also don't think that the title implies him firing back at EM.
If Nate himself says that it wasn't a diss towards the man, I don't think you can say that the title is meant to be interpreted as him returning shots. I mean it definitely can be interpreted that way, don't get me wrong, but I don't give it that meaning personally.
But I do like your interpretation of the TEAM-scheme with the T&A and what they typically stand for, I think that makes a whole lot of sense if you think about it, so probs to you for catching and elaborating on that. I really liked that.
Dude NF is other worldly. I feel like he has an enormous amount of talent I have honesty never herd from any other artist to date. "Real Music" with out a doubt me favorite clever clean meaningful outstanding artist ever. Much love and appreciation for all his honesty in every line.

On The Ringer alone he has plenty of lines with double meanings like that targeted at different people. If that’s a sneak diss he does it all the time. “Magazine can take Staples out” is a good example.

NF intentionally wrote it so it can be interpreted multiple ways. It can be listened to as a song addressing haters in general, but it can also be listened to as a response (not diss) to Em. NF is a perfectionist so he wouldn't have had it spell EM for no reason, his music is proof-read and he knows exactly what he's doing.
He goes on to say "I've patiently been waiting, please, I think it's time for my turn" and "Just let me be, eventually someday they'll see what I'm worth". That's a message to any of his haters and Em surely heard it too because he basically listens to all lyricist hip-hop.

I just want to slightly mention and simultaneously give a shout-out to Tommee Profitt and Saint X for producing NF tracks. Tommee comes in with the Orchestra/ Soundtrack elements and Saint X does some dope ass beats.

I feel like the line "Cross my eyes and dot my T's" wasn't acknowledged enough. When I caught that, I was a little bit surprised Knox passed over it (whether he noticed it was there or not).

The T and A line is about nate feeling alone, he is the outcast after all, and he said in a song before "You feel alone? Yeah I kinda feel alone." Which is from "when I grow up". "Drop the T and A sometimes if I'm being honest feels like it's only ME".
"Write my name on your hit list it might be the last time you wrote something" is Nate talking about all his haters saying rude stuff and sending him death threats.

It's gunning for you anyway. 2nd, it's nate basically saying his haters words don't mean squat to him and he's gonna expose them for it and discredit them, or something like that.
"Rip that cocky smile right off your face for thinking you're close to me." well, Nate has a black joker smile smeared on his face in videos often, likely to represent a fake smile, so he's maybe talking about himself, or telling his haters to quit acting so cocky thinking they're getting to him when they aren't, or he's saying they aren't at his level and to quit acting like they are.
Also the funeral bit is just referencing an older song of his called "Oh Lord".
On a side note, He's gotten better at rapping.

“You got fans, not like I do” really stood out to me. He’s Christian his crowd is different, Eminem is from a different perspective of rap. On top of his comments of being cocky, an just wearing his merch on your arrogant turf, he’s a fan of Eminem but will wear his merch on his turf it just all clicks to me . Everyone I’ve watched called Eminem’s kamikaze album a hitlist, in which Eminem wrote nf’s name on it by dissing him. I don't know why people consider Em's line from " The Ringer" to be a diss , " Recovery" was one of Eminem's best Albums so calling NF and recovery clone of himself isn't exactly an insult he was just saying he himself doesn't need to go back to that mindstate because he's moving forward but seemed more like a sly compliment to NF if anything.

The more I listen and dissect, the more I see some definite areas that could be interpreted as disses. Yet I just saw an interview recently where NF still said he wouldn’t take shots at Em. So subliminal? Who knows
I might be a little late on this but Nate is saying dropping the t and the a which is also “ta” which literally means “thank you” and if he is dropping the “ta” for “em” than he is not thanking him for anything, or this can also mean that he is just thanking eminem for dropping a line about him.

The 2 things i really can say its like "Jabs", Not DISSES!...Its the _"Em scream"_ line, And the _"Write my name on your hitlist, and maybe it will the last thing you wrote something"_ line.
But in my humble and honest opinion, I dont find this a DISS. Maybe Jabs?...But Idk hard to say. NF has paid homage to Em in the past and collaborated on songs. Even though that doesn't means that a rapper would like to challenge their pen sometimes to show some of the industry what the guy can do and is not playing when he haves his style, uniqueness and lyricism.
Now Em DID DISS NF or Jab at him there's no doubt about that. And one thing im with you Knox, If it was a DISS from NF's part, He would actually mentioned him in some double entaundra, Name him directly or just add more things in the song. Like some hidden but clear ad-libs, Easter eggs on the artwork, Say something constructive from MTBMB Side A / Side B _(I think NF said something about the B side i remember)_ but idk...Its hard for me man. I would like too see both of these gentlemans burn up those pens, And do something maybe for the culture. I think that’s in consideration to the song patiently waiting by 50 cent which has Eminem on it.

If you want to be technical, NF and Shady have been keeping up with each other since 2013. NF admitted that he listens to a lot of Shady and Shady likely listens to NF because they make little references to each other. NF talks about how hard he works to maintain.

"Write my name on your hitlist, it might be the last time you write something", Eminem has said multiple times that he can just write a hitlist of artist to blackbomb so they get off the scene. "Show up to my funeral wearing all black", Eminem is always dressing in black these days, at the time this was made.

EM Rap God response. NF says, "THE GAME" needs a makeover in Outro as well, didn't EM get the rap artist "The Game" on his record label? Also, EM did "Patiently Waiting" with 50 Cent, and NF says, "I've been patiently waiting, I think it's time for my turn" here. Sounds like a lot of similar phrases too specific to be coincidence.

I don't know if you know this already, but I heard nf one time talk about how he records and produces almost all of his songs with someone named Tommy ,and he said Tommy also does a lot of movie soundtrack type stuff, so that's how nf also gets his signature cinematic sound in his music as well. I didn’t see that you have reacted to a couple I have in mind. “Real”, “Outro” (which I think contains more of an Em diss than Returns), and “No Name”. Heavy hitters as I call them.
