Supremely played of course. Bream was unsurpassed, especially in terms of tone colour and passion. I had the pleasure of seeing him live several times during the 70's and 80's.

Excatly. He was such a special musician, an improviser, Jazz player, and his interpretations of compositions from Dowland to Contemporary are unbeatable. A real artist!

It's a testament to Bream's greatness that he inspired many composers to write such great music such as these bagatelles and,in a way, Bream 'wrote' the pieces as well because the composers 'heard' Bream in their heads when they composed. And he had such great taste in composers!
I like John Williams and David Russell etc. but isn't it interesting that the new original pieces written for those two outstanding guitarists aren't even in the same class as the pieces written for Bream. That's what was so unique about Bream.

  • @bachforvendetta9904

These were written for him by Walton. Bream’s connection to these pieces can be heard and felt.

they wouldn't exist without him not just because he commissioned them but because he inspired them - they were composed with his unique 'sound' in mind.

What a document! When I listen to these kind of performance I think that no repute exists by chance. I did not expect also that already since the mid 80's the original score was already investigated. To me study 10 was impoverished, not so much the 11. But can understand the Segovia choice, despite very disregarding the Villa-Lobos composing skill.
Overall I appreciated n.5, 8 and 9, less 4 and 6. The 1 ans 2 without refrains seems quite less beautiful. Ritornello is not only for practice purpose but aestetically part of the form of the first 3 studies.

I always remember thinking in high-school : "Did Bream really feel passionate about these strange, incoherent compositions? Or was he just being polite to his composer friend?"
I thought of the Bagatelles earlier today, and decided to give them another shot.
I'm ashamed to say that, honestly, they are still not my cup of tea -- but excellent work by Bream, as always.
I didn't pursue music as a career, so I probably have "tiny brain" on this one.

    • @tomvl3993

number 1 (not on this video) is a tough listen, but it's playful, at least. Number 2 (the first on this video) has moments of beauty and surprise. It's fun to play. Number three gets me inside! I adore number 3. Number 4 and 5 I don't know well enough to comment yet... But music is subjective. One person likes what another hates, etc.
