This is me trying to do digital art. I’m 37 and I’ve been a traditional artist for 20+ years. My husband bought me a tablet and clip studio and a tabmate to try and help get me into digital art but I genuinely cannot do it. I’m so overwhelmed with everything and it makes me forget the basic fundamentals. I honestly am so lost. I keep trying though but I feel like maybe I’m just too used to doing what I’m doing. But on the other hand- traditional art supplies are CRAZY expensive and I have to keep buying them so my wallet motivates me as well.

If it helps (as someone who did traditional as a kid, did some digital as I grew older, and is now back into traditional), I would recommend starting small! Stick to a simple round brush and only adjust opacity and size, and don't sweat it too much about the other stuff. You don't need a bazillion layers or all that. As you get more comfortable with digital you'll build up tips and tricks and short cuts just as I'm sure you did with traditional media :)

Hi! Traditional and digital artist here (mostly traditional). I use a ton of traditional mediums: graphite pencils, pens, alcohol markers, charcoal, soft pastels, colored pencils, and watercolor pencils (in graphite and colored styles). I have to say that my favorite mediums do change frequently, but I think soft pastels and markers are my favorite.
Alcohol markers look soooo clean because they soak into the grain of whatever paper you use quite well. They're also really fun to blend with!
Soft pastels are pretty hard to use, but they create a beautiful and otherworldly effect once blended. I do recommend getting fixative for the finished product though, because the pastels are basically glorified sticks of chalk and they smear super easily.

As someone who does traditional art, with different materials and mediums, i would say I start with a fine tip pencil for a sketch and then roll a kneading eraser over it and use a pen over it. I either just do pen shading or if I plan to watercolor I just completely erase the pencil sketch and define the lines better with a waterproof pen, I use the micron pens. Then I watercolor or color with copic markers. The lines that aren’t connected actually look super cool!!! And I think it’s perfectly well styled, when done well.

@naTa-fp1yy Sure! I have used Master's Touch, Shuttle Art Art Maker, and Wellokb markers, in that order. The Master's Touch are nice because they tend to be bigger so they hold more ink; at least the ones that I bought did. The shuttle art markers that I bought off Amazon are nice because you get 100 pack and you get a ton of different colors, but they are very skinny and tend to run out quickly. The Wellokb markers are new to me and I'm just trying them out. They feel cheap, as in light weight, bit they seem to blend ok.
Shuttle Art also makes a skin color set, which has about a 30 pack of a wide range of skin colors, dark to light.

It's exciting to see your traditional art!! Really looking forward to see more! I'm doing both trad and digital as well... I think my favorite pen for anything sketch related (still life, architecture, portraits etc.) is the one with a brush tip. Be it either a soft brush like those copic tips to fill bigger areas, or those with a stiffer and shorter brush tip for details or quick drawings. The changes in line weight comes more intuitive with this kind of pen and it just saves time to be able to vary between thick and thin lines without redrawing lines to make them appear thicker. I tend to do more traditional art when I'm trying out new techniques, it feels less restrictive (like you can move your hands and arms more freely - I'm a firm believer that the artists body movements translates into their art this way, like it's necessary to draw that confident line). For color I recently started to use Watercolor Brush Pens, they are pretty neat, best for quick color accents. But you def need the right paper, otherwise the ink will get absorbed too fast (like a marker) and you can't blend the color nicely. Oh and I try not to use the eraser and just let the lines happen as they flow, allowing mistakes. This challenges me to come up with solutions how to incooperate the "mistake" into the art.

As both a traditional artist and digital artist, I usually use a mechanical pencil because for some reason it is the easiest to use for me. I know you didn’t ask this question but I use a Gen 2 Apple Pencil with my IPad Air 5th Generation when doing digital art😁

Although I've mostly been doing digital recently, when I did do traditional I used alcohol markers which a pink colerase pencil underneath as the sketch. I'd usually lighten the sketch just enough so there'd be some colour still there so the markers could pick up some of the colour. I found having the pink colerase pencil under gave all the colours a nice warm hue and worked especially well with skintones. You can sorta use the colour of the colerase pencil like an underlayer to influence the overall hue of the markers you chose. I'd usually do the lineart last as most pens I'd use would bleed and ruin the work so I'd just play it safe by doing it last, but if ur certain the pen wont bleed id prob do it before the markers.

Honestly, the inked portrait and pose drawings give big concept art vibes. The first few pages remind me a lot of the art I see in some of my favourite indie games. These are awesome! As a traditional artist who dabbles in digital, these are great and I'm pretty impressed that you went straight to ink. I always do pencil first, as it's more forgiving, then hit it with the ink.

You’re doing amazing work here, Sam!!! Drawing in pen is all about working mistakes into the process. Mistakes are part of it. I usually start with a rough pencil sketch before going in with liners, but drawing in pen alone is a great way for me to loosen up. There’s something so refreshing about making such a rough sketch. (Don’t get me started on how fun brush pens are.)

I enjoy making both traditional and digital art, both for different reasons. I like how there's almost no limit with what you can make digitally, especially in terms of color, but I always find myself enjoying making art with just a plain mechanical pencil and paper much more because it's so simple.

Hi Sam! I'm a traditional artist (but I'm working at getting better at digital), and I often just pop open my sketchbook and draw in pencil - and always a mechanical pencil in 0.5 or 0.7. But I also sometimes will use Micron pens (or the cheaper Biango Microns) or Ohuhu alcohol markers! Love your videos and I can't wait to see more traditional stuff you do!

Awesome! So cool to see you picking up a sketchbook again. I bring the same liners and a small sketchbook with me when I travel, and they're so great to use on the go - 0 bleeding or smudging. My go-to tactic is to sketch with a dark brown liner then add red as an accent colour.
And now I'm curious how your solid knowledge of colour theory would translate to watercolours. Consider that your next challenge ;)

This is definitely gonna get buried but I do a mix of digital and traditional art. When I do traditional, it's just little drawings in my sketchbook. I sketch with a pencil, erase when I need to redraw stuff, and then go in with some microns to do the lineart. I like to use different color microns so I can have colored line art. And then I color the base colors with a mix of whatever cheap markers still have ink in them, add some shadows ontop, add some highlights with my gelly rolls and boom! Art has been made!

I love sketching with my 2B pencil on used scraps of paper (printer paper, promo stuff, etc.) It gives a healing break from having to stare at a glowing screen. Also, it's just me and my thoughts, no pop ups and no fancy tools to distract me from my ideas. Newly born ideas are very vulnerable to distraction.

I actually loved the line breaks in your drawings!
The thing I always try to do with fineliner sketches is to 1. draw the line of action of the drawing with a pencil first, and 2. go back at the end and add line weight to the drawing paying attention to the light source. Once drawn, the line weight of the shadows always makes everything in my work more polished.

Excitingggg!! If you're journeying into trad, I think you'll love experimenting with a bunch of different tools! Different brands, materials, build - every artist has an affinity to different tools (kind of like finding your wand in HP), and you'll be surprised by how the qualities of your output varies with each tool - while maintaining your own personal flare! I personally love the 2B pencil and Deleter Neopiko liners. I started with Microns like many others and I haven't gone back to them personally, I draw too hard and ruin the tips too quickly haha

As a traditional artist, I first sketch out my drawing and then I line it but sometimes I don’t use a pencil and it’s so free and I love it.. and it turns out amazing. As watching you draw without a pencil and just a fine liner after 8yrs you say? and seeing you draw is really incredible! It’s so stylized. It’s something like I wouldn’t do if I was in your position. I like to use markers, I wanna get into painting but scared, I’ve used oil pastels and it’s really messy but not anymore but it was fun while it lasted.😊❤

Amazing sketchbook! I am a traditional artist and when I was at art school I did a series of drawings with coloured fineliners. They looked cool and were a lot of fun. I like using pen and ink (dip pen and washes of diluted ink for shadows) too. Something about ink drawing is just so freeing. But my lines were much more heavy handed. These are so light they almost look fluffy! Just like the birbs

I don't do traditional art often but when I do I love using mechanical pencils, I love using kneaded erasers because they are perfect to lighten your sketches without erasing them completely AND without damaging the paper. And as for fine liners I use micron too and I love using Ohuhu alcohol markers with brush tips. They are SO cheap and gorgeous and So fun to work with and would LOVE to see you try them out. Amazing job Sam these are gorgeous and I acutally really enjoy the parts where the lines don't connect, it makes the overall peace just so beautiful to me
