  • A young man eager for adventure receives an unexpected plea for help from an estranged uncle, who lives a reclusive life in a remote part of Cheshire. Who are the strangers who lurk about his lonely farmhouse and why is he so terrified of sailors?
A new, original recording of a classic public domain text, read and performed by Simon Stanhope for Bitesized Audio.

'Round the Fire' was the title of a series of mystery and suspense short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, published in The Strand Magazine in 1898 and 1899. After the apparent death of Sherlock Holmes in the 1893 story The Final Problem, the Strand (which had originally published all the Holmes short stories to date) was keen to retain Conan Doyle's talents and persuaded him to compose this new series of unrelated tales. The stories proved to be highly popular with readers in both England and America, and were later published in book form (under the title Round the Fire) in 1908.
The Story of the Club-footed Grocer first appeared in the Strand Magazine in the November 1898 issue, with illustrations by Sidney Paget.
All 12 of the original 'Round the Fire' stories, narrated by Simon Stanhope, are now available on Audible and iTunes.

It's raining heavy. I made arrangements with friends to go see a movie. I am at the 1/2 way mark of this story. I just called them to say that I changed my mind about the movie. Ok, let this story continue..

A great Arthur Conan Doyle story, fast, no fat and morally dubious, which I loved. Superbly narrated with some nice accent/dialect work. Excellent. Thank you.

Hello Vera, how kind of you to let me know, thank you. I would like to narrate some children's stories, but unfortunately I can't do that for this channel as there are special rules governing content for children on YT, and I need to be careful to follow those. I may do something for Audible or similar at some point though, and will let you know if so. Thank you for listening!

Messed up. A good story for bad guys getting away with the loot after making a man live miserably in fear for five years! Getting away with murder. For shame. Not a feel good piece at all. I’m sure that was the aim for the time period it probably cause a small uproar.
I’ll stick with the most excellent Father Brown stories. They suit me better.

Yes, it appears in that form quite regularly in Victorian and Edwardian literature, you don't tend to see it in modern English fiction
