Nice job Peggy. Yesterday, at a club meeting, a tip was given to first drill a pilot hole before using a forstner bit. The reason being that the forstner bit doesn't cut the center very well, and it also gives a place for the chips to go. I will be trying this myself in the near future, to see if it works.

I know that many turners on CZcams just use the biggest Forstener bit they have when hollowing. Try starting with the largest twist drill you have ( I use 5/8"), then use your Forstener bits in increasing sizes. You'll eliminate the smoke, the heat that can damage your bit, and any chance of trapping the bit in the hole. You'll be amazed at how easily even tough wood will bore

Hello! Me and my wife love watching your videos, and how you explain what you do and why.
One tip on the smoking wood. Drilling any material, wood included, can be expected to create heat, but if your wood is smoking from excess heat, sharpen your bit, check the cutting speed, and use the right amount of pressure.
It should help, and save your wood and tools from damage!
All in all, we love your work, and aspire to get to your level of turning! Bravissimo!

Purple Heart is a beautiful wood. I made a letter opener out of a piece one time and my skin broke out in a bunch of red dots from where every where a piece of dust touched my skin so I never used it again for fear of getting in my nose even wearing a dust mask, it's just not worth the chance for me.
The vase looks wonderful!!!!! you were reading my mind when you drilled those holes. I thought to myself, now she needs to either make a silver or gold line above and below the drilled holes or even a burn line would look good.
Anyway the vase looks wonderful I would have added a burn line on top also. In my opinion, a thin silver or gold line above and below the drilled holes would have looked better just to bring out the holes better and just add a touch of color.
There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with changing ideas on the fly. I do it ALL the time and 9 times out of 10 the pieces end up looking better then what you had in mind to start with

im new to lathe turning.. actually just turned down some purple heart a few min ago.. its a trippy wood.. turning with the grain and against it i get 2 different looks and both are amazing.. curious on the rpm.. are you turning low rpm because its a bigger block... is it smaller the higher rpm and the bigger the lower? i was turning a small blank at 3400 rpm and its comes off so clean

When you get done turning and sanding Purple Heart set it outside for the day in the sun before you finish seal it and it will go back Purple then seal in good with poly or lacquer in gloss, satin or flat depending on what look you're going for and it will keep it's color much better (If you like the Purple).

A REALLY nice and interesting work, As a relative newcomer to woodturning I like your narrative explaining what you are doing as you go and tools you are using. It helps me a great deal so thank you for both great videos and guidance. One Question if I may I notice you ( and a few other experienced turners) use a bowl gouge to turn a blank to round rather than a roughing gouge... any reason or is it just personal preference.

I like how you took what could have been a regular vase, and gave it some memorable character. The irregular holes make me think of a leopard's spots - a good thing in my opinion, considering how beautiful those cats are. So, we take a piece of beautiful wood, add an artist's skill in shaping it, and then the daring to make changes when you thought you were done? No brainer - it's awesome! That's how art works when it is done right.
Think of how boring great works of art would be if the artists who crafted them thought, "Good enough," and left the world with ONLY their rough drafts - Da Vinci's Mona Lisa without her little smile? Michelangelo's statues without their exquisite, chiseled details?

    Hi
Beautiful Vase, love your spontaneity. I have a couple of questions: Why did you initially use a Bowl Gouge, instead of a Roughing Gouge, and you said it was Purple Heart then you refer to Paduk, are they the same wood? Lastly< why did you use the Skew chisel as a Scraper and not in a slicing action?
Look forward to your next video.

    • @PFWoodturning
      @PFWoodturning  Před 4 lety

Hi there. Thanks for watching. I like the bowl gouge better, so personal preference really. It is purpleheart, so if I said paduk, that was my mistake. As far as the skew, I tend to get a good cut when I use it as a scraper.

Was really thinking you were gonna finish off with some resin work to fill in the holes when you started drilling. Maybe next time.

A purpleheart knife handle blank at about 1" x 1,5" x 4 3/4" is 10 dollars or more here, and is pretty much the only purpleheart you can get your hands on legally. :( Sweden is unfortunately very vanilla in that regard, we have nothing with that "exotic beauty"-look to work with.

That's too bad, purpleheart is so beautiful! Thanks for watching!

I think less is more, and personally wouldve gone without the holes.

While you do an amazing job usually, I really didn't care for the holes. It could trigger some people (not me) with trypophobia.
