While at Mike Monaco's American International Karate Championships, we were fortunate to get an interview with the legendary founder of Kyokushin Karate, Mas Oyama.
I was there! That was the first ever competition that i went to see in 92. Right after that i fought in 93. That was a huge inspiration to me, to see Oyama in person.
As the description states, this is from a visit to the states in 1992. The interview was broadcast on the Martial Art World TV show on the Madison Square Garden Network that year.
He never killed bulls. Jon Bluming, founder of Kyokushin in the Netherlands and apprentice and friend of Mas Oyama states that this never happened. watch?v=eKS7HVIe29w Thumb this up so we can get rid of this faulty rumor.
Unfortunately, I felt that he was translating the nuances of Mas Oyama"s words by mistake. I would like to translate the last spoken word into English, valuing the nuances of Japanese. Without being overwhelmed by the strength However the ambition is high. Do your best without saying anything extra Be generous enough to swallow. Everything is centred around filial piety Become a useful person in the world.
@sierra2425 Even if those bulls were to be slaughtered for food anyway? Not that we approve of fighting animals for bragging rights. The original story was that he subdued a dangerous wild bull loose in a town. Later Grandmaster Oyama repeated the feat with caged bulls for TV and films. There is footage of a Kyokushin fighter fighting a confused, domesticated bear in the 1970's. Remember society considered (and still does) animals as mere property to be freely used at our whims.
I don't think he would be happy seeing how his style has split up after he passed away. All political of course so various practioners could make money for themselves. He nominated Matsui to head the style. , and I believe this caused the various splits. Such a shame.
If I could choose one historical person I could meet and get to know I think Mas Oyama is on top of that list..
His way of speech and accent are actually still very korean.
Cuz his mother tongue is Korean and even his wife and 3 sons are Korean.
