      The Guitologist I had a guy ask me do I know how to bias Tubes because I inquired about a job. I answered by using different caps and resistors (filtering frequencies). The company Cary Audio sells tube amps (class A) for over $10,000!
      This video proved that I was right. I haven't done troubleshooting any tubes since I was in the Army in 1979 as a Radar repairman, although I am back into buying and doing repairs on Audiophile equipment. Cheers for you Tand everyone else who watches this channel.

      It was great, I wish It was longer! I know, you know what your doing with amps, but Tony seems to know everything, and explains things in a easy to digest method.. You guys touched on the "tone cap" subject a bit, and I'm curios to know what you think about them. I know the signal caps you use, and have used them myself. I tend to purchase slightly more expensive caps (middle of the road type), as I mostly build or repair amps for myself, but have never purchased the really expensive type. I have swapped out Orange drop caps with 50 yr old ceramic disks to see if I could hear a difference...and honestly I couldn't. Are techs or builders just telling people you need expensive caps just to charge more money? But some people/techs swear they make a difference... some people even leave leaky Astron caps in the signal cause they swear they "sound" better. The only thing I can think is the caps are leaking and throwing off the bias of the next pre-amp stage, making it clip earlier... What are your thought's on the subject? Or is this a good idea for an entire video? Maybe some more videos with Tony, his Amplifiers are outstanding and I'm sure he appreciates the exposure to all your viewer's. Thanks for taking the time to read all this... Merry Christmas to you and your family Brad, Take care, Tom

    @AdamRainStopper Před 6 lety +2

    Kinda cool that he put the clipping circuit in, for someone like me to experiment with and find out how I feel about it, but it can be completely bypassed (unlike a few of the later 800's that had the clipping diodes sort of snuck in there), so when it ultimately underwhelms me, I can just flip a switch and go back to an all tube signal path.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah, having that stuff is nice for some styles of music, but you're right, being able to switch it off when you need to is nice.

    • @AdamRainStopper
      @AdamRainStopper Před 6 lety +1

      And the thing is, if what you want is high-gain with lots of clarity and definition, you really do need to just add another gain stage, there's no shortcut that won't lead to some kind of fuzzy over-compressed dirt. A JCM800 with the original Soldano "hot-mod" (not the one that replaces V1 with a 6K11 triple-triode, the one that just adds another 12ax7) and a fairly warm and middy cabinet (800 has a bit of scoop to it) and there is no style of metal that can't be played through that. There are more "modern" amps with 6 or even 8 stages between the input and the master volume, but they are all tube, and they will get you dirtier than you'd ever need to be without sacrificing clarity. It's like each individual stage is doing less of the clipping, and therefor allowed to retain more definition. The diode-clipping circuit is good for very specific lead applications (and I guess rhythm too if you're a smashing pumpkin), but the best dirty rhythm tone still comes from all tube preamp stages cascaded one into the next. I'm thinking of building a preamp using a very basic gain stage from a tube manual, but then cascading like 5 12AU7's, 10 low-gain triode stages, just to see how correct my hypothesis is. I think that if you have two preamps, one with 4 stages and the gain maxed, the other with 8 stages and the gain set lower, (all else being equal or similar) you should be able to get the same amount of total distortion out of the latter with more attack and clarity. I could be wrong, it could be a matter of tone-shaping off the first stage, but it seems just logical to me.

      There's a lot of it around. Don't get me wrong, there are surely quality differences separating some caps, and they might last longer as a consequence, but it's hard to tell which will survive best long term without a time machine.

    • @gingercat777
      @gingercat777 Před 6 lety +1

      True, but the issue was tone and it took a dude here in OZ who built two Marshall amps with exactly the same components....except for the coupling caps.....the result was absolutely no difference in tone. I have used basic caps in a lot of my builds, after realising hey these Orange Drop caps don't sound any different....It was pleasing to have it confirmed.

    Brad,Thanks for getting back into the guts of an interesting amp(s), as well as for the meeting of the minds; welcome back after your necessary hiatus....gitarrrrists, come out to playaaay (clink, clink)...please do more along these lines...BTW, I have a very nice copy of that Blencowe (he be da bomb!) book that I'd part company with for just $3K...couldn't agree more with your take on metal films, although there are times when I wish I could still find tantalums at a reasonable price...

    I have a question, I'm building an amp, what I plan on doing is transferring my Altec Lansing ACS53 multimedia speakers sub and drivers into a cooler to make them portable Its going to be for a license plate guitar I'm building. The guitar is going to be Johnny Lowbowe style I'm having issues how to take the sub box apart. How would you go about breaking it down? Advice desperately needed. Love your videos. Thanks in advance.

    4:15 ok Paul Gilbert, we get it.. you can shred. lol. Hot fire! Hey I've heard you talk about Charvel guitars before... think you said you owned one back in the late 80s or 90s? Ever see the Charvel surfcaster line? I think they were promoted, believe it or not, by Scott Ian! I had one in the mid 90s, and loved the thing. Serious regret about selling it. Would love to hear your thoughts on that line, or even something about lipstick pickups! Cheers Brad!

    Hey a little doubt somebody ask me about use a transistor lfo into a cathode of one 12AX7 to add a vibrato/tremolo effect in single ended tube amplifier, Its a good idea do it, I found one schematic from 70's some factory uses tip37 as oscillator. Thanks

      Jon Ault, it depends on the amp model... It can be remote mounted (remove the jacks from the board and wire them to where the PCB must sit)

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  Před 6 lety +1

      No. Only if RF interference gets in because of the longer leads, or if connection issues surface because of them.

    Those metal film capacitors were probably mylar going by their yellow color. The least expensive of the film capacitors and obsolete (unless used in the tone section for certain nostalgia sound). Now if they are indeed polystyrene, then leave them alone. Those are considered by many to be the affordable holy grail performing capacitor. Up there and even outperforming some Teflon and PPS (Polyphenol Sulfide) as the best. And yes, there are astounding differences in audio by different capacitors, particularly harmonic artifacts when DC biased. Go polystyrene or PPS if possible. Polystyrene is near as ideal of capacitor except they cannot be in an environment that exceeds 85 centigrade. Since they are not compatible with automated soldering processes, they were quickly replaced with PPS as the higher temp substitute and are becoming more rare. The next substitute is polypropylene and finally PET type capacitors, the (substitute/equivalent) of mylar units. I would love to see a video where you replace the tone capacitors in a guitar with PPS units and run a test.

    At 33:08 he talked about "paralleling the first stage". What does that mean?

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  Před 6 lety +2

      +Rick Chavez he sends the input signal to both grids of the V1 tube, rather than going through one then the other.

    • @rchavez2112
      @rchavez2112 Před 6 lety +2

      Ah ha. And uses one resistor for both plates. Thanks.

    • @tonydorris1998
      @tonydorris1998 Před 6 lety +2

      Because you are paralleling the plates, grids and cathodes, you cut the resistor values in half. Lower values of resistors around a tube stage gives you less resistor noise, thus lower noise overall.
