      My fav this month was a toss up between under the dome by Stephen King, and Disquiet Gods by Christopher Ruocchio - both bangers! Sorry to hear about your speed bump, and hope your May is even better of a reading month! 😊

    If you want another retelling of Huckleberry Finn, try Finn by Jon Clinch. It’s about Huck’s father.

    Great wrap-up! My book group is discussing JAMES next week. Such a great book. I am sad about DAY. I love Becky Chambers, and I will read this pair on your recommendation. Whoopi Goldberg's memoir also sounds wonderful! Thanks for all of these great recommendations.

    James is top notch, even though I didn't read Huck first. I think I knew enough about it to imagine how well Everett was able to subvert the original.
    Today I picked up Paul Auster's The Book of Illusions as a re-read. It's one I rated five stars back in 2005, so I want to see how it/I have changed since then, if. He was such a good storyteller.

    Great wrap-up! I agree with your thoughts about reading Huck Finn before James. I know a lot of people disagree but I really do think Everett"s novel is in conversation with Twain"s and I enjoyed considering them together. I'm interested in the Becky Chambers books.

    Great wrap up 👍Monk and Robot, Yay! So glad you enjoyed them both, I'm hoping that there's a third at some point as I just want to spend more time in that world with Dex and Mosscap. The Three Body Problem - I own that, but I've not tackled it yet, to be honest it daunts me quite a bit. Am waiting until I'm a little more well-read in my science fiction before diving into it, in the hope that my brain might be less likely to melt if I'm a bit more used to hard sciencey stuff!
    And yes, April seemed to disappear at warp-speed, how the hell are we in May already! 😱

    • @mildrumpus
      @mildrumpus  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I think some of the science in “The Three-Body Problem” might explain how April seemed to vanish, but I’m not exactly sure about that. Let me check my notes. 🤓📝

    I want to try those Chambers books. I read Long Way to Small, Angry Planet and didn’t move on in the series. I also read her To Be Taught If Fortunate… also enjoyed but didn’t love. Figured I would try these as well. The Three Body Problem is sitting on my shelf and will be read soon… very excited for that one. Great wrap up!

    Another great video! I'm glad you enjoyed Goyhood, I'll add it to my TBR. I'm currently reading Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel, it's a character/community-focused dystopia and I absolutely love it. I've also been reading The Trial by Kafka. It's a strange one, and I have to put it down frequently because of how frustrating the miscommunications are, but nevertheless a fun read.

    I have James on my shelf that I am looking forward to reading because as you said, I have heard such good things about it! I don't think I want to read the original though 🙈 I was wondering about Day, but I think I am going to skip it. I have not read any becky chambers before but I really want to change that this year! I'm going to start with the long way to a small and angry planet as that is the one I own. My sister read the three body problem but she said she was quite bored because it felt like reading a science textbook 😭

    • @mildrumpus
      @mildrumpus  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yes, admittedly a lot of “The Three-Body Problem” went right over my head but I am curious to find out what happens next. I think you can still enjoy “James” without reading Mark Twain’s book. I found it to be a tough read due to the language and racist ideology of the time, but it only made me appreciate Percival Everett’s book more (and Twain for writing an anti-racist book in that environment.) I keep hearing great things about Becky Chambers, so I hope to read more soon. Thanks so much for watching! 😎📚👍

    I want to read Huck Finn and then James as well, I have very little idea of what Huck Finn is even about. It was mentioned in (Swedish) school and we probably read an extract or something, but never the whole story. I think there’s a river… 😊 And I think I won’t enjoy James as much without that basic understanding.
    Tommy Orange is another one I want to try! And that duology is on my tbr as well. When to get to all of them?!
    Great wrap up! 😊 I really enjoy your videos. The only thing is I find it distracting when there’s no eye contact! I mean this in the kindest way possible: just look at the camera! 😅 You’ve got everything else going for you!
    I’ve had a few good reads this month as well, wrap up coming soon, but one I enjoyed was Sociopath by Patric Gagne and I’m currently reading Only this beautiful moment by Abdi Nazemian.
    May will be quite a mix!

    Love how lively you are. I think I've read Huckleberry Finn, so it's interesting to hear there's an inventive retelling of it.
    Shame about the book that got you into the reading slump. In those cases would it better just to put it on the did not finish shelf?
    I'm reading 3 body problem at the moment and that's my next video. I think for most people it would be challenging read with its complex scientific concepts, so that's something i have to keep in mind. But I'm loving it so far. You should watch the netflix show. They did a good job at hooking me in, and it's probably dumbed down a little so the general audience can understand.

      Hey, there! Thanks. I started watching the first episode of “Three-Body Problem” last night. And yes, it would make sense to put the book on the “did not finish” shelf, except it doesn’t exist for me. I will see a book to the bitter end. 🤣
