Shulgi of Ur and the Neo Sumerian Empire

- This episode continues our study of the Neo-Sumerian Empire with one of its most famous kings, Shulgi of Ur. Shulgi is not only one of the longest reigning kings of the ancient world, but also one of the most prolific in terms of his achievements. What began as the "Sumerian Renaissance" with Ur-Nammu continued and you could say, was perfected under Shulgi. He brought Sumerian culture and influence to its height not only in Sumer, but across the ancient Near East. However, all good things must come to an end, Shulgi's Neo-Sumerian Empire being no different. His sons and successors were not able to hold onto all he'd created with his last descendant, Ibbi-Sin, having to pay the ultimate price.
Learn more about the story and great achievements of Shulgi and the Neo-Sumerian Empire.

The Neo-Sumerian empire doesn't get enough attention as it deserves in mainstream history. Thank you so much for shedding some light on it.
I agree, it's often skipped over in most history books...glad you enjoyed this and more to come soon! Thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate it!
у нас они в учебниках пятого класса писали,да и по факту это самая знаменитая шумерская династия.
Yours is best Sumerian Histories I've seen. They seem very well researched, including the maps, and the presentation makes the whole thing entertaining and easy to digest! Kudos.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate the kind words and am glad that these are helpful. If you have any suggestions on how to make them better, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks again!
The last gasp of the ancient and mysterious Sumerians
This channel is worth watching for the names alone: Shulgi, Ur-Nammu, the Guteans... I’m enjoying just saying these over and shall trot them out to impress folks when the opportunity presents. 😘
Haha yeah they are pretty cool. My favorite though are the Mitanni names - Artatama, Tushratta, Shaushtatar... they're fun to say.
Thanks so much for stopping by, I really appreciate it. Stay safe!
This channel is amazing. Im hooked. Ive never before found so much quality content on such ancient peoples. Ty for making and sharing all this

I've actually started learning Sumerian and its system of cuneiform over the last few weeks, and I'm loving your videos. They're putting so much into context for me, so thanks heaps, keep up the great work!

Working on a piece of historical fiction/sci-fi/fantasy based around Kindattu, and the sack of Ur. Thanks for all the help Cy.
I love when you quote a King or something you do it with style 😎

The cycle of city-states of Mesopotamia developing into kingdoms and empires and then falling to nomadic invaders.
Yup, and this pattern has repeated itself so many times in history!
Thanks again for stopping by, I really appreciate it! More great empires being swept away by nomadic invaders coming soon!
@@HistorywithCy I'm looking forward to it and I approve very strongly of your chronological series on the ancient world.
Most people make videos randomly but I like the order of going from the pre-Sumerian era to the Bronze Age collapse. At least, this is what you seem to be doing anyway.
@@killthecensors58 yes, that's exactly what I'm doing... more or less going from the early bronze age to the iron age and beyond!
Another excellent video. It is a treat when I see a new upload from your channel
Thanks so much, I really appreciate and am glad that you liked it... I'll do another video about Neo-Sumerian literature concerning Ur-Nammu and Shulgi soon, stay tuned!

Hi Blue, thanks so much for stopping by! I hope your holidays are going well and continue to get better! Also, thanks for the kind words and glad you liked the vid...have a great weekend!
They had technology lol, but I Know what you mean. It wasn't very advanced compared to the technology we have today
Great channel, videos not too simple, not too complicated, enough to immerse oneself with pleasure
Thanks so much for stopping by and glad that you liked it! That's kind of what I'm going for... I want to do my best to provide scholarly information in a non-scholarly way. Happy that this helped! Stay safe!
Every video is of excellent content! Thank you very much from a person with studies in history!
Thanks so much for the kind words, I really appreciate them and am glad that you liked the video. It's funny, I wasn't sure if people would really watch this one because Shulgi isn't as well known as other ancient personalities of Mesopotamia; the fact that you and other watched and enjoyed it means a lot to me. Thank you!

I think Shulgi is my favorite Lugal in the history of Sumer and Akkad. He was one of the most impressive individuals in all of ancient history in my opinion. He was truly an innovative and intelligent man who changed Mesopotamian society for the better and he shall be remembered with awe and reverence even to this day. Praise SHULGI! Thanks again for your great work. I always watch your videos after I read a certain part of Mesopotamian history to help me better understand and appreciate the rich history of the ancient Mesopotamians. Thank you!
нужно помнить что это была первая в мире тоталитарное государство,которое сделало человека винтиком,а жестокость правителей Ура сравнима с древнекитайскими правителями,где ради похорон владыки умерщвлялись сотни людей
Even with Shulgi's efforts to build an institutional system, the ancient world was characterized by Rule by men so it faded with his death

You recently asked what new videos viewers would like. I would like u 2 do a video on the Ubaid culture.
Thanks for the suggestions... I had done a really old one on them about two years ago... one of my first videos. The production quality was, let's say, different than the more recent ones, but the info legit. Check it out if you're interested. I'll also considering do a rehash of it in future.

Thank you for stopping by!
Hey Cy, What ever happened to the Akkadian people ? did they get absorbed into the Assyrian Empire ? or did they just die off ? where did these people go ?
Those in the north became the Assyrians and those living in the centre of mesopotamian merged together with the Sumerians and amorites and created Babylonia and the Babylonians
How do we know so much about sumer? For example when you mentioned that they created a new calendar, was that written down somewhere or is it through archeological findings? Thanks for another great video! :)
That's a good question. There were a couple of ways. The first calendar I believe was actually found in Nineveh in the library of Ashurbanipal. It was actually a copy of a Babylonian one but believe it either mentioned events from the Ur III time period or claimed to be a copy (of a copy) of one from the time of Shulgi. Later on similar calendars or fragments of calendars were found in other areas also claiming that they had been in use from the time of Shulgi. So from that scholars concluded that Shulgi created a workable calendar that was used even after the Ur III dynasty ended. That's my understanding at least. Thanks again for stopping by and your questions... if you have any others, please don't hesitate to let me know. Stay safe!

Your doing a very impressive work on Mesopotamia Cy.. just sent you a comment today with some sites referring to Dilmun and i just wonder, there has been so many great figures in Mesopotamia is it possible they chose to be burried in Dilmun? what are your thoughts on this...Thanks for all the hard work you are doing.

@@HistorywithCy it would be gr8 to find out if sumerian did choose Dilmun as a burial site coz we had too many great figures in Mesopotamia and very little about their end, who knows what we can find in there. by the way shia Muslim in Iraq have a very similar practice of burying their dead in a place classed as holy(Valley of Peace cemetery).

Did the Neo-Sumerians speak Sumerian or Akkadian? I'm still a bit lost.
Hi, thanks for stopping by. So most of the general population was now speaking Akkadian, but the government did a lot to promote the Sumerian language and it went through a revival with it being the official language of administration and new literature and hymns being composed in that language. No thanks ! This region called Mesopotamia is a hot bed for hatred. Why fight against people who are related to you ?
Nice video.. but when you say Sumerian it's actually proto-chaldean, it was Jules Oppert who created the term Sumerian in 1868! The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans knew nothing about so called Sumeria.
Using this elongated time frame, great empires of the past such as the Sumerian, Akkadians and Old Babylonians were Invented by late 19th C and early 20th C scholars to fill the historical voids. The ancient Greek and Roman Historians, not surprisingly, knew nothing of these ancient peoples. SUMERIAN, said Heinsohn, 'is the language of the well known Kassite/Chaldeans, whose literacy deserves its fame'. www.sis-group.org.uk/ancient.htm#p5
Hi, thanks for your comments, I appreciate them. I understand what you're saying, though I think "Sumerian," "Akkadian" and the like were/are used because they really differentiate the various peoples of the region in antiquity, especially by language. Though I could be wrong, but I think why initially the word or phrase "proto-chaldean" was used is because the word Chaldean is extensively used in the Bible for really the entire region we call Babylonia.
However, Sumerian, Akkadian, Assyrian, Aramean, Hurrian and a who host of languages and cultures are very distinct. Calling them all Chaldean when they are all very different no longer makes sense. The language and culture of the Sumerians predates that by the events described in the Babylonia or Chaldea of the Bible by over 2000 years. Before the mid 1800s, most in the west didn't know that people like the Sumerians even existed - they only knew terms such as Chaldean, Assyrian, Babylonian, and of the Persians, the Medes and others because they are found in the Bible. By the time the Greeks and Romans really got to the east, Sumerians, Assyrians and a whole host of other peoples were already gone. Herodotus may have written about the Assyrians and some history of Babylon but now we know that much of what he wrote is incorrect.
Anyway to keep it short, Sumerian, Akkadian and Old Babylonian, their histories, languages, cultures etc are distinct and simply calling them proto-chaldean to me doesn't make sense and actually diminishes each of them by simply generalizing that they are more or less the same. I think it would be like saying that all people in southeastern Europe are the same, that there are no distinctions between Serbs, Croats, Bosnians, Albanians, Bulgarians, Hungarians, Greeks, etc.
Anyway, that's just my view. Thanks for sharing yours and again, I really appreciate it because that's how I also learn new things. Take care!
