#SimonandGarfunkel #TheStoryOfBridgeOverTroubledWater - Hudba
This was my mom's favorite song of all time. Just before she passed away, we (my 3 siblings and I) were at her bedside. We wanted to let her know it was ok to let go. I pulled up Bridge on my phone and played it for her. When it ended, she whispered, "Again." After the song ended the second time, I leaned in, kissed her on the forehead and whispered, "Sail on silver girl... All your dreams are on the way..." She passed a minute later. I can't ever listen to the song now without crying. Crying right now in fact. But they're lovely bittersweet tears remembering the moment. I was holding my mom's hand the whole time and I can still feel her hand in mine. I'd love to thank Paul Simon for writing the song and Art Garfunkul for his hauntingly beautiful vocals.
Mine too.
😘

Such a beautiful life story inspired by a stunning song. Brought me to tears. God bless your heart and soul, and may your mom rest in peace. ✌💛🙏 from across 'the pond'!
What a moving story... I'm crying now... Sending love to you! ❤️
I've often thought of this song especially after my husband died of Covid. Whenever I felt afraid because of being alone; it was like the Lord Jesus was singing it to me. It brought comfort to me.
Why do you stand at my grave and weep ?
I am not there , I do not sleep .
I am healthy , well and strong ,
Here in GOD'S Heaven I can do no wrong .
So do not stand at my grave and cry ,
I am not there , I did not die .
And come what may ,
We'll meet again some sunny day ❤
I still cant hear Bridge over troubled waters without having tears in my eyes. Is without a doubt one of the greatest songs in music history
Please play this at my funeral. Jesus is my bridge over troubled water. 🙏
That is exactly my thought. Jesus said: “No greater love has a man that he lay down his life for his friends”. That is exactly what our Lord Jesus did on the cross❤ Jesus is the Bridge to Our Father! 🙏
I agree
Yes, dear ones...Jesus laid himself down for all of us
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Absolutely
Paul wrote the song, and Art knock it out of the park.
Thanks for giving Art the credit he deserves!
Bridge over troubled Water is a musical masterpiece !
Art Garfunkel was born to sing this musical poetry by Paul.
Art was destined to sing this song
July 1970, FSB Mary Ann, Vietnam, A Co. 1/46th Infantry was having a bad time out in the bush, with several casualties, when somebody broke in on the radio, saying "3-6 Whiskey, this is for you," and played this song. I will NEVER forget it. It moves me to tears even today.
Oh wow. That made me tear up. ❤️ And thank you for your service. 🙏🏼
Such is the power of music. I can totally relate to it. I am a renal transplant survivor and music has healed my body, mind and sou!
Bless you Richard.
Me too. 😢
One of the most perfectly sung songs in the history of music.
Build bridges not walls.
Agree !
Agreed!! It was a song that needed to be written
Agreed.
Very difficult to argue against this. I've heard many renditions of BOTW and to my ear, all sound inadequate compared to S&G's original.
Paul Simon is one of the greatest song writers of the 20th Century. But I have to say, I respect him immensely for knowing to let Art Garfunkel sing it. He openly states that he felt (at the time) that it was the best thing he had ever written and yet he let Art sing it. THAT is real class in my opinion.
The version of this song in The Concert in Central Park is beyond legendary. But then again, that entire concert is legendary.
And yet Art would sing it and never once acknowledged to an audience that Paul wrote it....

@@suehaden6103 Did he need to?
@@suehaden6103 I have never listened to a solo Garfunkel concert so maybe those are what you have in mind, but I've listened to most every S&G concert that's available on the internet and Art always, Always finds a chance to mention that all the songs are written by Paul.
I’m glad that Paul Simon decided to have Art sing it. It truly is one of my favourite ever. Paul as the writer and Art’s voice was the best partnership in making beautiful music!
Paul Simon became a part of our lives with that song especially.
Great song. My wife thinks it's the most beautiful song ever written.
Paul Simon is easily one of the greatest song writers of all time.
For sure
Huh 🤔 ...... Never heard of him

VERY easily 👌👌
@@robinhood480 check out his music on CZcams. He and Art Garfunkel were a quite famous music duo in the 1960’s and 1970’s
"I'm on your side", something we all long to hear.
We are so privkedged to have lived in this time. I’m 72 so I lived thru it. These guys, James Taylor, Beatles, Stones, Animals, CSN & Y, just in & on & on. & on. Every days was like Christmas w/all the new music. Look at. Eric Clapton! How many bands was he in? Like 10!! Oh brother, never again, not like the BLATHER being spit out now. No sir, give me the 60’s & 70’s!!!
Cream , Jimi Hendrix Experience , Hollies , Moody Blues , Joni Mitchell , Yardbirds , 5th Dimension , Seekers , The Who , Beachboys , Chicago , Bob Dylan , Traffic , Mamas and Papas, Doors , Byrds.......Lovin Spoonful......DC 5 and many more NOT TO FORGET MOTOWN.
Art sings like an angel and then he ends with power. There will be another duo like Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Mahalo for this timeless masterpiece.
I read something about an interview with Paul Somon and they asked him why he kept Art around because he, Paul, could sing and play. And Paul replied, "Art sings the songs like I hear them sung in my mind".. I thought that was brilliant!
Yeah, brilliant. But only to non-songwriters. I mean songwriters often compose that way.
Thanks for sharing! I love ❤️ older musicians, artists, song writers, & real vocals. That song moves me everytime I hear it.
Simon had a very amateurish voice. Especially compared to Art G's magnificent one.
They work like glue they stick.
It takes a certain humility that Simon didn't otherwise possess to acknowledge that.
As much as I view CZcams every day, this is my very first comment. I was a very introverted 15 year old girl who felt very left out of life when I first heard this song on the radio and it became my song. I bought the LP and played it over and over on Daddy's stereo at night gazing out into the night. I wanted to be a Silver Girl with somebody following behind me. BOTW followed me all my life and never lost it's power over me as my soul song. Other songs came and had their day and went, yet this one stayed with me. Now I am nearly 66, and they can play it at my funeral. Paul thanks so much for writing Bridge Over Troubled Water and submitting it. It has had a lifetime effect on this one little girl!..... Linda
Nicely said, Linda
Very beautifully written. 💕 thanks for posting this.
Dear Linda. Thank you for your story it touched me. I was born in March 1963 so I am now 61 this is also my very favourite song of all time. Tony in Portsmouth England.
I am now 67 years old and this song has been with me since I was a young teenager, Paul's song writing and Art's beautiful voice, just amazing.
This song saved my sanity after a horrific tragedy when I was 13 yrs old - Thank you Simon & Garfunkel 💞
This was our wedding song in 1970. Family and friends thought that it was a strange choice, but my wife and I never questioned it. Over the years, whenever we would hear it, we would stop to listen. At least one of us would fill up. I lost my wife one year ago, and this now has a new poignancy for me. God blessed us throughout our lives with this truly inspired song.
I'm so sorry but I love this song and I'm glad you both shared it. I can't imagine what you've been through but I hope in time this very special song can become a source of comfort or of happy memories. You're part of a huge community of people who have a connection with this song for one reason or another, I hope it still means everything to you.

You have my condolences and my congratulations. That may sound weird, but if you have a love like that for over 50 years, you were blessed.
Hang in there! Love lives in your heart!

A classic about Drugs.
Paul Simon is Mozart, Lenon, Bach, Mercury, Beethoven and Elton John. Paul is the single best singer/song writer of my lifetime. Nobody is better. Nobody.
I'd put Dylan there or McCartney but I'm inching towards Simon as being the greatest. I'm 36 and really got into Simon a year ago. He's one of a kind and methodical in his writing and melodies. I admire that craftsmanship. I'll continue to listen.
When he sings "Im on your side", I was 8. No one ever said that to me before. I took it personally and it changed me. God was speaking...to me.

I feel exactly the same. Jesus is the bridge between God and me over the troubled water in life. This song is very inspirational.
They just don't have artists like this anymore. These are two of the greats. This era of music can never be replaced, and never ever topped.
Gosh so true!!!
Sure we do.. but many don't make it past 27 years old. :/
Amen
That is so true. I don’t listen to much modern music. Too much banging and clanging. Like they are trying to drown out the sorrows of this world instead of accepting and embracing them! I can’t even think when the junk of today comes on. I just got hooked on Adagio in G minor and of course there nothing more powerful than listening to Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma! And THIS that Mr. Simon gave so little credit to is a masterpiece that touches the soul.
Sure we do, it’s out there…you just have be in touch with things, radio won’t bring songs to you like it use to. Ever heard of these guys…they remind me of Simon and Garfunkel….Kings of Convenience, they are from Norway…have great harmonies. czcams.com/video/c-ppARtcQfo/video.html
So, what are we thinking now, 50+ years later? Top 10 all time? I still get chills.
top 1
Definitely
Has to be top 10, right up there with Stairway to Heaven, Bohemiam Rhapsody too IMO
Definitely in the top 3 anyway
Still gives me goose bumps, and makes me cry.
I believe God gave this song to Paul because he knew a lot of people needed to hear it. And still need to today. And he had Art to sing it, which was maybe the only man who could.
This is NOT a little hymn, Paul. It is an anthem. And a work of true art. Thank you 🙏🏻 for putting these words and music together for generations to hear, feel and connect to something much bigger than ourselves.
God looked down at the Earth on that day and smiled, called Gabriel over and said, hey Gabe, won't you go down and whisper these words into that young mans ears. Us and Him have been enjoying it ever since.
Weirdly Paul’s son is called Gabriel 🤔🤔!,
This song always seems like God comforting us, in our toughest moments.
Yes!! I always got that from this song too! Lyrics like: "I'll take your part" as Jesus took our punishment. And "Like a bridge..." as Jesus is our only bridge to Father God in Heaven.
And "I will lay me down..." as Jesus did on the cross!
It gives me chills, especially when I hear Paul say that he has no idea where those words came from! Well... I have an idea. 🙂
Also, the part where they talk about the title first being incorrectly called, "Like a pitcher of water." As soon as I heard that, my first thought was how Jesus said he was to be poured out for us, like it was prophesied in the Psalms:
"I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It is melted within me." - Psalms 22:14
@@jackweubanks so true
For me this song has nothing to do with God. But to each its own, right?
"I dedicate this to my bride. " , said Jesus.
My husband bought me this album when we first met, because we we both loved this song. I played it at his funeral 41 years later. His headstone has the phrase " like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down"❤
It's an anthem about believing in a higher power in your life and making yourself available to be a higher power in someone else's life.
Not just a song ...a hymn of hope ...brilliantly written and beautifully sung !
I always loved that song too. It could be one of being tears to my eyes, sobbing or of Hope & Acceptance. This world has so much evil, rude, disrespectful, hateful people in it today, I just want "Peace & Freedom".
One of their very best. ♥️
Well said
..."I'm sailing right behind.."
That one gets me every time.
Imagine you're on a perilous, stormy sea, but, fear not, I'm right behind you.
It's the song of loving support. Only what makes life even possible on Earth.
It's a pity the very next words are "like a bridge...."
Talk about mixed metaphors: it's almost as if they bought them by the bucketload and threw them at the melody and kept what stuck!
Dear Paul,
About two or three years ago, there was an exhibit about you at the Jewish Museum of Maryland in Baltimore on Lloyd street. (kind of in the downtown area) My girlfriend told me about it. Sorry I didn't see it, but as I was told, it had one of your first guitars, a letter from summer camp......that's all I remember.
I play the "Sounds of Silence" on the harmonica. What a song, as is: "Bridge Over Troubled Waters." Now I'm not going to leave my girlfriend, but I like the song "Fifty ways to leave your Lover" "Just slip out the back Jack, "Make no plans Stan", "Drop off the key Lee" and set yourself free. All your songs have so much feeling and meaning.
One of the greatest songs ever written
And one of the greatest songs ever sung.
I'm 58 and I think this song is the best of songs and I've heard alot of songs ✌️
This song got me thru the recovery of being a child of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. That and, I am an island. It saved me and helped me continue to have compassion. It helped me be willing to be a mother. I can't explain how strongly it resonated with me in the late 80s. It was the warmth I needed when I was alone in foster care. It makes me cry to this day because it was my life. I was the one that was there for everyone but no one was there for me. It's taken 50 years, but my wounded child's soul has healed and I have a small wonderful family that I love deeply. Thank you for this wonderful gift at a time when I needed it.
May God have Mercy, Compassion and Blessings on you
May you have a happy life from now on, no one deserves what you had. All the very best xx
It's good you had a song.I had to have many songs to make it through. These songs were my substitute for what was missing.

Linda Birdbike I am with you.
And originally this exact line was thought to have been written too simple. I don't know if anyone still thinks that, I certainly do not.
A troubled generation needed to hear these words, thus Paul was given the inspiration.
As a retired university music professor and professional musician of almost 50 years, Bridge Over Troubled Water has been hands down the best contemporary song I have ever heard, let alone had the privilege to perform. Thank you for this valuable insight.
Hearing Paul Simon recount his process, I recognize how it mirrors that of Mozart to a T. In terms of the composition itself, the strength of the melodic line combined with its length (longer than that of pop music of the time) directly reflects the melodies of Mozart's multitude of works, both operatic and instrumental - which have and continue to resonate deeply with people around the world now for over 250 years.
From the gospel inspired harmonic progressions to the flawless lyrics and unprecedented arrangement, Bridge Over Trouble Water is indeed a masterpiece.
As a professional musician for 56 years, I totally agree! Still playing.
To me, this song is the modern day equivalent of Amazing Grace. It just has a kind of universal resonance and spiritual affirmation which is incredibly rare in music, or any in art form for that matter.
Very true. Well said.
You could not have said it any better Christopher.

How beautiful - Bless you and Dottie 🙏
I have a younger sister that was going through her teenage to young women phase. She knew I was always there for her. She was very shy. She admired me and wanted to be like me. It was kind of like she stood behind me watching and learning. One night we were at a club and I was watching her dance. She had very long blond hair and the spotlight shining on it made it look silver. As she danced I thought about the song and the last verse. With a tears in my eye I thought " Sail on silver girl sail on buy", as in coming out from behind me. "Your time has come to shine all your dreams are on there way" she didn't need to hide behind me anymore but if she needed me I would be sailing right behind. This has been our song and her daughter feels the song also fits her and me because she knows she can always depend on me to be there for her.

Paul said he didn't know where it came from? It came from the Lord, Paul! It was 1971; I was just 16, and was suffering horrors in my family life, when I heard that song on the radio, and it reached into my soul. I got the sheet music and learned it on piano. I played it over and over as tears slid down my face. I played it so often, I even came up with my own version. Someday maybe I'll record a video of me playing it.

Bridge over Troubled Water has to be one of the most beautiful Songs I’ve ever had the privilege to hear. Art Garfunkel’s voice was Amazing. Paul Simon a genius. Art’s voice! OH My!! A timeless wonderful song!!
“Simon speaks on questioning the simplicity of his lyrics? Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Leonardo da Vinci
"Brevity is the soul of wit."
-William Shakespeare
No, he is not questioning the simplicity of his lyrics. He knew that the simplest lyrics is the best, bec the song becomes more universal and relatable.
Simple but meaningful.. Thanks to you sir Paul for creating such good song and to sir Art, thanks for voicing out what the song means.... So soothing and inspirational.... Love you two... God Bless both of you..

First time I remember hearing the song, was riding back home with My Grandfather on a Country Road, after visiting an Uncles Dairy Farm. My Grandfather was about 70, and He liked Simon and Garfunkel and played them loud in His 66 Plymouth Fury! I always liked Simon and Garfunkel myself as well!
My Dad had a green 66 Plymouth Fury 4 door. I traveled alot of miles in the back of that car listening to the radio and choking on cigarette smoke...

I was 9 years old when this record came out. I heard the vocals, especially Art Garfunkels and thought "That is what angels sound like when they sing in heaven" I have no idea why I thought that but the thought stuck with me for all these years.
I’ve always loved this song but it means so much more to me now. I suffer from Post Traumatic Stress from 24 years as a professional firefighter. The words resonate with me as I’ve had help and am now helping other firefighters get over that bridge.

Simon provides the song. Art the voice. And how they blend when they both sing... like a marriage in heaven.
I have always felt that this song was a message from God and Jesus and have always obtained such comfort from it. It is wonderful to hear that it does seem to be divinely inspired. We were on a trip to DC a few years ago over Memorial Day and walking by the Capitol. Suddenly we heard the song! Art Garfunkel was practicing the song for the evening’s concert. Breathtaking and magical - we were so fortunate to be there. I will never forget it; we still talk about how beautiful it was. Thank you both. What teamwork.
Wow! Perfect place, perfect people, and perfect timing! It simply doesn't get better than that!
Right up there with Monkey grip glue”
I agree. There was a solemnity to the entire experience and the gospel music influence and simple lyrics just go straight for the heart. It's like an expression of agape love, a beginning of a description. What if Christian musicians after it was released closed the circle by adopting the song back into expressions of Christ-like love to others (I feel South-Korean singer, Sohyang, seemingly did in her version, though more musically bombastic).
All these songs are such a gift. We are so privileged to have lived through all this great music. It was such a joy and comfort to me growing up.

This is the most religious song I have ever heard. Played at my mother-in-laws funeral, because she was a silver girl and very protective of her family. To this day, I picture her singing this to us from heaven.
Paul and Art sang so many wonderful songs together, but Bridge over Trouble Water was so moving and almost haunting in the way it touches one's feelings. To this day it still gives me chills when listening to it. Paul's song writing abilities really came out in this song, and Art's voice is so masterful.
I was maybe 12 years old at the time. My father had just recently killed himself. This song lifted me up so many times when I was down that I don’t know what I would have done without it. I had no idea how magical the music was at that time because I was too young to have any other reference. Paul Simon was young too. How did he do it? It’s nice to see he had a team of believers.
Came out during a sad and lonely time in my life as well--though not as tragic as yours.
Respects for making it through such a raw situation at such a young age. That has to be one of the hardest things to learn to accept as real. To me, this song is the audio equivalent of a feather duvet with a fleece cover on a cold night. You can wrap it around yourself. For a little bit, you can feel safe and protected, snuggled deep and warm in the music. It carries some of the pain with it's last fading notes. We still have the same problems as 5 minutes before, just a little bit easier to carry. Music is as close to magic as us mere muggles can preform.
That must have really been tough, bless you
Hugs 🤗 losing a parent is not fun at any stage of life and I’m grateful that this song was a comfort to you in your time of grief.
tomcoryell : I'm sorry for the pain of losing your parent at such an age that must be been too much to make sense out of. If it wasn't for music, I'd have either gone nuts or not be here now. It's true how music can quiet the soul. Thanks for sharing and Bless you.

Paul has an excellent voice, but Art carried it to new heights that will stand forever.
It was written specifically for Garfunkel, who initially said No. You sing it. Weird but true.
The Art smarts, you mean.
And yet Art gets just a wee of credit if none at all.
Paul created the rough draft, number of musicians polished it to perfection, Art...gave it the heart and soul and life to live eternally.
I have been unapologetically in love with Bridge Over Troubled Water since I was a very young woman. I still weep when I hear it. It touches my life experiences, hopes dreams and prayers. I am decades past being that young woman and I pray that I am never too advanced in years to feel my heart yearning and to cry.
Song every songwriter wish they wrote
It is a gem!!! However, did you interview every songwriter? Please don't use words you cannot back-up. Yes, this IS a GEM!!!!!
The last years of my Dad's life were very challenging after my Mom passed away. He was lonely, and for whatever reason, the other family members, although I truly believe they had a great love for him, hardly ever made time to call or visit. During those years, a day never went by that we didn't talk on the phone, nor did a weekend ever pass that I didn't visit. One time we were driving to our favorite restaurant when Bridge Over troubled Waters came on the radio. When it ended, my Dad told me it was his favorite song and that I was his Bridge Over Troubled Waters. It was a lovely compliment, and now, all these years later, whenever I hear it, I always think of my Dad. We were great friends!
Rolling Stone magazine called it perfect. And perfectly arranged and recorded. It is stunning.
It transcends perfect and enters the realm of "sublime"
@@ivanppillay914 Yes. It is sublime.
It makes you want to weep when you think of what popular music has turned into
@@wadejnelson I agree with you. Sad, very sad.
@Chairman Meow yeah, that didn't make sense.
I think "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was Art Garfunkel's best vocal performance. 50 years later and it is still a timeless classic.
This was the title to my father’s last sermon in 1987. He passed Sunday morning never getting to preach it. Jesus truly is our Bridge over troubled waters.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
Psalms 23:4 NKJV
It's funny that Paul was hesitant to write a 3rd verse because it was always my favorite part of the song. As the strings come in with that single bass note, it sends chills down your spine. And when Paul begins the verse singing with Artie, it gives the song a whole different texture from the first two verses. For me, that's one of the greatest verses ever put to tape.
The best songwriter America ever produced.
Love Paul Simon! But no, that would be Bob Dylan
"When you're down and out, when you're on the street my Lord, when evening falls, so hard, I will comfort you". Love this song, one of the best written songs, ever. The world needs more of this today.
Yeah, that's not how the song goes. Nothing about your imaginary god in there at all. The song is about friends supporting friends, not relying on fake deities.
The Lord is not mentioned in this song.Stop doing that.
@@johnnyd63 who would you expect? Will your neighbours come when you're down and out? Who you gonna call when the evil comes? YES He is not literally mention pero ayaw pag buot kung ang Ginoo iya gipasabot!!!!! So stop buoting ha!!!!!
God (understand that as you choose or know in your soul) is where those words first came to Paul. The music from the universe!❤
"I have no idea where it came from." That's a creative genius. Not many people can do that. Also "Better than I usually write" just goes to show how good this song is
To this day I get goosebumps during “sail on silver girl”.
Totally agree, i was lucky enough to see them at Wembley stadium in 1982, right at the front, when he sang that line i got (and still get) shivers. I remember paul simon sitting behind Art just enjoying it like the rest of us.
This!! This is the epitome of song writing! My mother played it for me and I listened until the record almost wore out and I grew up and now my children love it just them same! You just can’t ever beat this song! I’m so glad I have it as part of my life’s soundtrack❤️ Thank you Paul and Art for so many wonderful songs🎶
My mother loved this song. She was in her 40s when it came out, I was a youngster. She just always adored this song. I always felt like it changed her life, somehow.
I always think about & often cry for a girl I never met and who may have never existed, just out of reach, unattainable. And now I feel that for a special lady who is more likelyb but mirage of my imagination.
Hello, Im not really good in english but can you enlighten me what does sail on silver girl means?
My wife went to sleep forever with this song on her headphones. She had a smile on her face.
Wonderful comment! Thank you.
Love that!
That was so sweet and tender! Thank you for sharing that supremely poignant and emotional moment with us!
Well I tried my to hold it back after reading your post, but tears just started gushing. You know there has been so much written about and famous artists have talked about the fact that they know how much some of these songs mean to people. From weddings, funerals, graduations, making out in the back seat, watching a sunset, party's and so on and so on. These songs are the soundtracks of our lives. Thank you for sharing that moment.
I had this song played as I, my wifes 3 sons, and 2 grandsons carried her into the chapel for her final journey miss you x
He was God’s instrument at the time, used to send everyone a message.
There are over 400 versions of this song and the original remains the best.
Both Paul and Art are great on their own, but the both of them together are just so much more. So many of their songs are just timeless.
Paul Simon is so talented, so modest, so calm, so deep, just delightful. Listening to this song is like listening to God sing.
Paul was listening to the Swan Silvertones - great taste, Paul! I love listening to the old Claude Jeter and the Swan Silvertones recordings, and I love the old Simon & Garfunkel recordings just as much.
Such a gorgeous song, it should probably be played every day, everywhere. Maybe kindness will increase...maybe wars will end...🌿
I agree with you Diane this catastrophe called War , illnesses pandemics and so many other injustices we hope it will just stop so people have a chance to breathe wholeheartedly and appreciate each other and what we can have on Earth and make it a reality for everybody
Well said
Songwriting genius and vocal perfection, a masterpiece.
One of the greatest songs ever....
So true
Paul and Artie would agree with you
The best in my opinion
The simplicity of the lyrics is the genius of it. Writing complicated lyrics is easy. Saying something in a new way, simply, is what makes great songs great songs.
“Considerably better song than I usually write” - the musical understatement of all time
Does that mean his other stuff is crap?
Joost Mehrtens no he was just like, I must be growing as a songwriter. Although Sound Of Silence is pretty exceptional and that came first
@@TheHManShow
It is a great song, maybe his best, considerably better than the rest.. is an exaggeration, but calling that an understatement is a bit extreem
he could have said " a considerably better song than ANYONE writes" and been just as accurate

Thank you Paul and Art for this absolutely breathtaking song. It is among the best songs in the world and my personal favorite. Thank you for writing and singing and sharing your work with us. We will be eternally grateful and are blessed to have had both of you in our life. ❤️🙏🏻
I was fortunate enough to see the boys perform in concert back in 2003. When Artie stood at the edge of the stage, and sang this song, it was like magic.
I believe God put those words in Simon’s thoughts to write a song of deep loving comfort for those who needed to hear those words.
It is so a gospel song. Brilliant. Paul Simon is up there with the very very best.
