  • The BBCSO Discover is a fabulous free orchestral sample library perfect for those starting out with orchestral writing. But how easy is it to write something with? And can it sound good? Do my skills as a programmer still hold up with a free library? How does it compare with the sound of my full template? Let's find out!

    20:14 - Reproducing the track with my full orchestral template
    20:42 - Playing the track (with the full template)
    23:10 - Comparing the two tracks
    24:25 - Some final thoughts
    For those curious, my full template of sounds for this track consisted of a core set of samples from the East West Hollywood Orchestra, with smatterings of other libraries such as Vista Strings (Performance Samples), LCO and Albion Tundra (Spitfire Audio). Somewhat basic as templates go, but something I'm very familiar with.

      This to shall pass was the first composition I heard on another YT video. Since then I've used a lot of your music like Horizons passage of time, Artemis, Soar,....... list goes on. Perfect cinematic classical songs often with a driving hook through them and about 5 to 7 mins long 👌 @DocColVideo is my channel and you can see how I use them (I got better as I went on so last ones are best. Lol).

    BBCSO Discover was my first "serious" sound library when I first got started in composing. I've since graduated to Muse Sounds, but I still use the BBCSO for specific sounds and instruments. Honestly, though, I never was able to get it to sound as good as you did here😄. Thanks for showing that trick with the timpani. I'll need to try it - it could be a game-changer. Keep up the good work my friend!
    Edit: I feel your pain every time you mention legato. Just know that you're not alone.

    Just listening to your music keeps me motivated. I'm a visually impaired individual who dream of composing cinematic music. I had started learning about digital audio workstations a while back, fortunately there are daws that's accessible for blind. I would not say that it's easy because it isn't. not only would I need to learn how the program works, but I also need to learn how things can be accessible for my condition. Unfortunately most instrument library plug ins doesn't work with screen readers wich we use to navigate and select stuff on the screen. I only wish that more and more creators will make their plugins inclusive.

    This is going to sound really weird. But as a child my my favourite movie was The Wizard of us. I could watch it on repeat. It wasn’t until later in life . (Still youngish lol) but I realised it wasn’t so much the movie I was watching on repeat, it was the composer. Herbert Stothart I believe. And now I can can actually recognise his work in other movies straight away. I’d never had the feeling since. I actually really disliked orchestral music. Then I came across your work and somehow . Every single piece you put out, I’m straight away closing my eyes and I can picture a story in a story as the musics playing. It’s made me fall back in love with the music. You have this incredible talent that you just can’t learn somewhere. You just have this gift. It’s incredible. And not only that your sharing it with us. It’s so beautiful and a true a testament to your character. And yes I do remember one of earlier pieces I was thinking “good good god when is this intro ever going to end” 🤣 But honestly your so grounded. And thank you for the honour of sharing your work. If you ever need help. I might be able to help with the triangle. Lol

    Thank you so much for this! The information you give is so well presented and so on point. I use the BBC free orchestra myself and I was wondering how a professional composer feels about it compared to more advanced (not free lol) orchestras. 🎹Could you recommend a free piano to use for piano solos? I use the Soft Piano from Labs but it sounds a bit muddy or blurry (lack of clarity) especially in the low end... it also makes my speakers vibrate a bit in an unpleasant way (I tried it on different speakers too). Thank you again! Your music is amazing! 💜

    • @ScottBuckley
      @ScottBuckley  Před 6 měsíci

      That's a good question! The Soft Piano I love, but it works best with more introspective simple stuff. I think there was a nice piano that used to come with free with the Soundpaint VST (soundpaint.com/pages/free-engine) - but I'm not quite sure if it's still the case. I also don't mind the 'Glass Piano' within Labs - has a bit more of a classical piano vibe that could be good?
