The Pivot

  • Barack Obama took office describing himself as America's first "Pacific President, and, as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan wound down, his administration made Asia a top priority for U.S. foreign policy. The move has been dubbed "The Pivot," and it has the potential to be one of the most enduring legacies of the Obama presidency.
With three key elements - diplomatic, economic, and military- the Pivot, or "rebalancing," as administration officials now prefer to call it, is designed to bolster the U.S. position in the Asia-Pacific and enhance ties with key friends and allies. It has produced a flurry of high-level U.S. visits to the region, a new trade initiative called the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and, most controversially, a series of moves to strengthen the American military posture.
Administration officials insist that the Pivot is not directed at China. But the policy took on added urgency and much greater visibility in the past two years, against the backdrop of a series of increasingly assertive Chinese foreign policy moves. Meanwhile, many in Beijing have complained that the policy is actually designed to contain and block the rise of China.
In a complex, volatile, and hugely important region, the Pivot is in fact a complex and still-evolving policy. This 22-minute film is based on interviews with leading officials, diplomats, and analysts, including Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, former U.S. Ambassador to China Stapleton Roy, former National Security Council Asia experts Jeffrey Bader and Kenneth Lieberthal, Chinese diplomat Jia Xiudong and others, as well as on-the-ground reporting. It offers a fascinating and detailed look at the Pivot and its implications for U.S. relations with Asia now- and in the future.

well, if it looks like containment, walks like containment, quacks like containment, then it is containment. No matter what label you stick on it.

to expand a bit ... the US wants the money to keep flowing, while managing the power projection that tends to come with that. so ... I like to call it "Buddha Palm and Mack Hand"

Thank you for doing this report.Increasing the knowledge Chinese and American peoples have of each other is critical to both nations prosperity and longevity. In the U.S., the citizenry needs to understand that China is not going to be a replacement of the USSR, and will be here to stay in a new capacity that the world has not seen the likes of previously.Likewise,China needs to learn that there is a place for it at the table.Dialogue is important. We've just seen how complicated the situation is!

great job. could have used more Chinese interviews - in Chinese - that could have put their message into a bit better perspective. Because it is, without question, containment.

The US is paranoid... as they always are. China does not have the ambition to dominate or conquer the world - like the US does since its founding days. Most people neglect there is a very important cultural component here - Chinese culture is not one of outward aggression. Also historically, over the past 100 years, China endured multiple foreign invasions, the collapse of its emperor regime, became half-colonized, was dragged into the capitalist economy by force etc. USA has never experienced these so it has a hard time understanding China. USA also has seriously damaged its credibility with international affairs. True it has many allies and has done much good to them. But if anyone violates American interests or dare to challenge its authority, USA declares it an enemy. How pathetic and utter arrogant

How absurd that U.S is criticizing China for the expansion in the south China sea while they expanded from east Pacific to the very west of Pacific.

If american feels justified to question China's assertiveness in pressing its national interests for what is obviously in its national interests, why should China not question american interest in an area that is not within its sphere of interest, other than to maintain its hegemony that it does not deserve anyway.
