  • The Casey Foundation’s Allison Holmes hosted a discussion with staff - as well as a young participant - from Identity, Inc., which creates opportunities for Latino and other underserved youth in Montgomery County, Maryland. Speakers include:
    ● Diego Uriburu founded Identity in 1998, aiding immigrant youth. Beyond his role as executive director, he actively contributes to local equity discussions, helping establishing the Black and Brown Coalition for Educational Equity and Excellence. He’s involved in multiple committees and boards, including Montgomery Moving Forward and the Latino Health Steering Committee. Before Identity, Uriburu worked as a psychotherapist, specializing in the Latino population.
    ● As a program director at Identity, Carolyn Camacho leads five high-school-based Wellness Centers and manages community mental health initiatives, including non-clinical emotional support groups and family strengthening programs. She also spearheads the family reunification program. Camacho is a frequent presenter on trauma-informed positive youth development and restorative practices, particularly concerning immigrant youth and families. Additionally, she oversees Identity’s partnerships with research institutions like the University of Maryland School of Public Health and Child Trends.
    ● Enrique Mejia, an 11th-grade student at Wheaton High School, arrived in the United States in 2019 with aspirations for a bright future. He became involved with the Wellness Center in 2021 and participated in Knight Time. Seeking greater involvement, he engaged in various mental health groups, family reunification programs and the Newcomers Summit in 2022 and 2023. Serving as a peer leader has enabled Enrique to continue his personal growth and inspire fellow Latino students to strive for academic excellence.
