    Can someone please explain to me how cork improves a bats performance? Does it really matter if its corked or not? The ball only makes contact for a millisecond and it's only hitting the outside of the bat which is wood so not sure how it effects the ball. I'm just not understanding the physics behind it is all.

    • @fulccrum2324
      @fulccrum2324 Před 2 lety +5

      From what I've read, cork was thought to make the ball go further. In actuality, being a good absorbent of force and making the ball travel less distance?

    • @rafaelguasp1141
      @rafaelguasp1141 Před 2 lety +2

      It creates more of a bounce when hitting the ball because even tho its not hollowed, it does feel like it is because the center is still lighter then the wood surrounding it. So instead of a solid crack, you do feel a slight bounce off.

    • @MarkVrem
      @MarkVrem Před 2 lety +2

    Corked a few in the 80s, but never for pros....used a toolroom lathe and a steady rest, then packed powdered cork and the dowel as a plug. Never believed it made a difference in beer league play, but there is a psychological advantage. We believed that you had to turn the label away from the ball, or your bat might break...lots of myths....

    • @squirrelguy2195
      @squirrelguy2195 Před 2 lety +1

      Mythbusters did an episode that proved your theory correct. Corking the bat in fact made it overall less effective. It might be faster, thus in theory making it easier to make contact, but the trade off is it actually makes the ball travel less distance, which could easily could cause a double become a single or an out or a home run become a fly out. A player is in fact better off using a lighter bat than corking it if they were trying to get on base via a single or double.

      I'm pretty sure you'd be wrong on that. The impact is going to be on the side of the disc (or, in your case, rod) of cork. So the compression and expansion shouldn't be any different. If it were being used like a cue stick, I would agree with your logic. But either of us could be wrong, the only way would be to test it out, which neither of us is likely to do. ☺️

    • @since1876
      @since1876 Před rokem

      There's a video that talks about how when MLB cracked down hard on sticky fingers, there was a very sharp increase in batters getting hit. Once they got bored of enforcing it and stopped checking as thoroughly, people began to have better control of the ball and were less likely to accidentally crack skulls. So, officially, it is cheating, but it's cheating in a way that keeps players safe. Which is kind of a good thing. 😜 Anyway, the point is that there's worse things to worry about than sticky fingers.

  • @TheRealSwampOperator
    @TheRealSwampOperator Před rokem

    I played with this too
    I took my cork and ground it up to about the size of #4 turkey shot, and packed it .
    This worked better than the method here.. objectively..
    But the best one I made was with the ground up cork , but about 3/4 inch from the top, I put lead in... Then capped off with a thin peice of dowel..
    That think was a hammer, reminded me of the old c core aluminum bats without the ping..
    I think if you mixed the ground up cork with the right amount of wood glue, and corked it that way, you'd get all the advantages, but with a lot less risk of a break...never tested that theory, but I think it would work..
    I know this, ground up cork is the way to go... Not ground to a fine powder, but about the size of a bb..
