"Intelligent and Well-Acted Colonial Adventure; Three-D and Characters -
There have hardly been any films made in the United States about the French and Indian war period. This one is in my judgment not-overly-well-directed but it is very-well-acted indeed. It boasts attractive and laid back George Montgomery as a Jed Horn, frontier ranger, the fine classical actor Howard Petrie as Robert Rogers, the Rangers' Chief, Irving Bacon as Montgomery's capable and comical sidekick, very good actor Lester Matthews as General Amherst, Phyllis Fowler as Running Otter, in love with Montgomery, James Seay as Montgomery's brother-in-law, gorgeous and able Joan Vohs as Fortune Mallory, Ben Astar as his friend Francois, Louis Miller as a French spy and Cicely Browne as Montgomery's sister.
The plot and screenplay by Robert E. Kent I find to be complex and filled with good characters. Horn and his partner take reports to General Amherst from Rogers, and soon pick up new recruits and march north, to help stop a French-lead Indian attack. An added problem is the capture of Horn's sister, a coercion by a French spy aimed at forcing his brother-in-law to betray secrets of the Rangers' and the British army's movements. Horn and his partner rescue lovely Fortune Mallory from a lecherous brave and take her to be left with Francois, his trapper friend and with his wife, who's in love with Montgomery. She says she escaped from the fort; but he does not believe her. The brother-in-law takes a false report to the Fort as planned, to French General Montcalm and his spy master, then accuses Horn when he is noticed sneaking back of being inhuman, only caring about killing. Rogers tells Horn that after the war, he will be fine again. The spy master had also offered the brother-in-law $5000 to kill Rogers. Next day, the Rangers attack new but misplaced French cannon and outworks; and Horn saves his brother's life. Horn and his friend Wash escort Fortune to stay with Francois, and we learn the man is a patriot running a supply operation vital to Rogers' men. Horn finds himself falling in love with Fortune. Running Otter begs him to let her be part of his life; he refuses. In anger, she goes to the Fort and betrays their operation, then accuses Fortune of having been the traitor. She of course later swears she did not tell. Horn and Rogers come back and note that the house dog has not barked at all. They get seven or eight men to play drunken Frenchmen and approach Francois's house. Once inside, they overcome the French soldiers there and free their people. [...]
Will Rogers arrive in time to save them? Will he be able to take Fort Ticonderoga? You will have to watch to find out.
The music is mostly stock, but the cinematography by Lester H. White is above-average. The art direction by Paul Palmentola is also worthy of mention and the period set decorations by Sidney Clifford are outstanding and believable. Visual effects by Julian Gunzburg included some telegraphed and some more-subtle three-d achievements. But this film also led to a spate of colonial films in the 1950s, and the great series "Northwest Passage", on TV. shortly afterward; so it has been very influential, and incidentally helped the careers of Vohs and Montgomery for several years thereafter. A personal favorite." - Written by silverscreen888 on IMDb.com

I was born and raised 4 miles from Fort Ticonderoga. I now live 1500 yards from Roger's Island in Fort Edward. Rogers ranger's main encampment.
This western is a golden oldie ......... well worth watching over & over. Thanks for sharing.
I love to watch a movie set in this time, they’re hard to find, my favorite one is Rogers Ranger’s
Can't believe those movies are free! Awesome.
You always tell if a movie was made in early 3D by things coming right into the camera.. like the Torches... George Montgomery used to come to our CM Russell Artshows in Great Falls Montana back in the 90s.. Really a nice guy.. He was just stuck in these B-class movies... He was quit the sculptor and furniture maker..
These are great movies. They should put more of these on. Pathfinder the North West passage
We enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! You may also enjoy this film: czcams.com/video/FDeoeBeKmdg/video.html
Fantastic old Western! Thank you for upload 😉👍🇦🇺
This is a very fine movie. It is not à " Last of the Mohicans" type or the "Northwest passage " but it's an old / new Hollywood style film. I'm glad I discovered it.

I love old movies
One of my favurite movies.well done George.
In Australia in the sixties this was classic "Saturday Matinee" stuff !!!
Such a hero's voice on the captain.... Llol
Thank you 🙏
Interesting and historic film, it was the first action film shot in 3-D. It was a big money-maker for Columbia, grossing almost $3M.
Interesting that the Three Stooges short originally attached to the movie - Spooks, which even included a joke about Fort Ti - has been given the digital 3D treatment, yet this hasn't.
The little boy playing George Montgomery's youngest nephew was my cousin Rusty Hamer, who became much better known later playing Danny Thomas' son "Rusty" on TV's "Make Room For Daddy". Russ was 7 years old when he appeared in this movie.
Q+qq
That is pretty cool to know !!!
I always thought he had the most unique name!
I am sorry that your nephew died, Richard. I feel sure that seeing him on films is a comfort to you .
That would make you very old now
A marvelous performance of drama, suspense, humor, and romance in early colonial times in God's beautiful creation; captured so artistically in cinematography. I like how the Fort Amherst cannons were shown during the opening credits as a clue to their role at the end of the picture.

Great movie for a Christmas day
Hmmmmm. Maybe I will put this on hold…..until Christmas afternoon. Thanks for the tip.
Great Movie Thanks 4 Sharing .
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. A bit of US history here.
It was a bit odd watching this knowing what would follow in the 1770's.
I tried to learn more about the cute gal who played Running Otter. It appears she was in the movie and dropped out of sight. I suspect some upper level exec noticed her, married her and whisked her away to nice six room luxury home in the mountains and they had four kids..
I saw this movie 30 or so years ago. It remains an excellent movie
bon western,merci beaucoup
This would have made a great 3-D movie with all the in your face camera action.
It WAS made in 3D. There's a 3D Blu-Ray coming.
Thanks I went to fort Ti when I was a kid. Its in Lake George New York state.
Thanks for watching! We also recommend this movie: czcams.com/video/cD4LoyOA_dQ/video.html
What a handsome man I wld have loved to seen him play Rett Butler
Fun to watch on a rainy day. It must have been filmed in 3D
Old. But. A. Gold. Movie. 💯💢💥💫💣🗯💣🗯💣 👌👍 thanks. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
This must be in the late 40 early 50s color is lovely!
1953.
This is a "classic western"? Fort Ticonderoga was in upstate New York, on the border of Vermont. Unless you live in Maine or the Maritimes, it's as east as you can get. LOL.
It is a good movie, though. Appreciate that you posted it.
Obviously filmed to be shown in 3D cini-vision ! 😂❤
This movie had 3D all over it.
Thank you 🤩🤩🤩💖💖
You’re welcome 😊
Filmed in Simi Valley. Upstate NY is heavily wooded. Simi has open stands of oaks.
Upstate New York was more heavily wooded 71 years ago except for the Adirondacks which still are pretty heavily wooded
A very good movie 👍 Thankyou very much for the upload.
I'm sensing this was one of the early 3-D movies
That’s what I was thinking 🤔
Correct - This was the first 3D movie that I saw. It was 1953
@@9billkemp I have to ask was it as good as today's ... Just a tad before my time
Still waiting to see this in 3D, and the proper aspect ratio.
Yeah it had all the markings of a 50's 3D movie - ala Dr. Tongue!
I live about 40 miles from Albany New York lot of history around my area
Excellent period war flic, amazingly not damaged by the appearance of a strange blonde.
Enjoyable.
whoa man, it's like they're coming right out of the screen at me.
Did you noticed the photo in Leroys house? It's interesting to see how much the director was focussed on the 3d-effect ignoring details, costumes etc...
I have never seen this movie unless my parents took me to it when little at the drive in you could see two movies in your car was so nice and today’s world it would be safer than a theater!!
Pena que não seja legendado ou dublado em português. Já assisti outros filmes desse canal já com legenda em português.
Just my thought, but if they put it in 25 different languages, we wouldn’t be able to SEE THE SCREEN because it would have different languages plastered all over it.
RIP to all the camera guys who died making this film.
Are you saying that people died WHILE FILMING THIS MOVIE ? Incredible.
Fort Ticonderoga is on a narrow chock point of LAKE Champlain, not on a river.
True but the river is a stones throw away, I worked at Fort Ti and live in the area.
Man the northeast sure looks like California:)
Wow...Joan Vohs was beautiful
❤️❤️❤️
Wait 👌
Glass. In rural farmsteads. Wow. So expensive in those days. Doesn't people do Background checks in historical days. ..
Log cabins with stretched oiled skins on the windows in the cold months is more correct.
this movie could easily be a prequal to the Danielle Boone series.
I love how this is supposed to be New York State and yet it looks so much like California . Also Le'roy's house was very modern american complete with glass and shingles, shit now i gotta go back and look for gutters and downspouts . lol
When they showed Fort Ticonderoga, it looked like the real one.
19:21 for rangers how come they didn't have scouts out, ahead of their little column? even green horns would learn to scout ahead, they might have avoided this ambush.
Yeh I know, it’s Hollywood and their scripts, I guess a lot of time it’s a matter of cutting time and money down or just no military/tactical advisors .
@@Joseywales414 If someone had read "Rogers" Rules for Rangers", they might have learned that Rangers NEVER marched bunched up, in single file.
That's just ASKING for a bullet to go through one man, and into another!
Rogers was also ADAMANT that alcohol and missions DID NOT MIX! Off-duty, you could get as potted as you liked, as long as you were fit for duty the next day
Very interesting reading, Rogers' Rules.
Uh , after all. , It's a movie 😅
@@raybenoit5238 Yeah, but military vets get annoyed at stuff like this. The Rangers STILL require new recruits to memorize the Rules. It's basic stuff, and written in a way a even a half-savage woodsrunner could understand.
A 3 Dimension movie where You need special glasses to see the object hit You.
if she escaped from this fort such a beautiful woman would be recognized if she returned, wouldn't she?
I also seriously doubt that anyone would EVER mistake Fortune for a boy!
ESPECIALLY with a wet shirt on!
In movies, anything is possible. Like reloading a musket in 10 seconds.
nice
VIVE LA FRANCE !!!
Great tomahawk action. Polygamy. What's not to like?
I support Polygamy as long as ALL the chicks are hot!
❤
What I'd like to know is, where are the rest of the escapees?
Perchè non metterlo anche in Italiano?
Español por favor
Q pé na amo filmes c este ator mas sem legenda ou dublado n tem como assistir
I'm pretty sure the name of this is Rogers rangers, not Fort Ti.
what was up with the dog with the arrow? i think some editing happened.
OK, hate to nitpick but in the opening credits the artillerymen in the British army should be wearing blue uniforms. Until 1855 they were administered by the Board of Ordnance, rather than the War Office like the rest of the army. Won't stop me continuing to watch.
Also in the opening, some nitwit was standing DIRECTLY BEHIND the cannon when it went off!
I guess nobody bothered to educate the actor on how muzzleloading cannons RECOIL like a mother!
Nothing to say on 21:55 ?
Bra strap showing in this century? Very unladylike, indeed !
🤠👍🏿
Beau film, j 'ai réussi à mettre le sous-titre en français mais, par moment on comprend rien de ce qui est écrit, comme d' hab, les sous-titres sont nuls, dommage !!!
Albany had paved streets in 1760?
Rate 5.1
Western
Great movie, although George's shoulders could have used a bit more padding.
Thanks for watching! We also recommend this movie: czcams.com/video/6FvYZ9cEoS8/video.html
And then Benedict Arnold routed them temporarily, organized the Valcour Island maneuver, gave up Fort Ti again but then crushed the British forces at Saratoga
They weren;t exactly "routed" and to put things in context, the Brtish had 16,000 troops in Norht Amercia at MOST at any one time, with conscription the colonials had over 400,000 ! To Add to this , the British troops serving in N.America were not first rate, as they were needed elsewhere around the globe, including in Spain and elswhere fighting in Europe and other places in the world. American arrogance has never really recogised the truth!
Allen MacCannell: I think you might be confusing a event of the Rev. War with the French & Indian War. Arnold served only 13 days in the Connecticut militia during the F & I war. He was 16 years old.
@@iangrantham8300 arogance or not, routed or not, driven or not, the fact is that the British did leave the Colonies and then after further consideration they left again in 1814. The British gave further thought to their previous colonies again in1863 but the world had changed by then and no action was taken.
18th Century French soldiers in North America wore white coats not blue.
'West' of what, Hartford?
It's ok, I'm alright, I survived being shot at, stabbed, set on fire and being jumped on numerous times!😂👓🍿
Funny thing is the British didnt have any trouble with the Indians, the Indians saw them as protectors. Weird huh!
dommage pas en français
Got the women and two loose of clothes. No olf to shoulder staff
French Canadians have a very bad remembrance with rangers......
What river??? Ft Ticonderoga is on Lake Champlain, miles from a river! Wow, the writers didn't do much research! The ONLY river connected to Lake Champlain is far north, near the Canadian border. Ft Ti is in the southern part of the lake. Facts matter when talking about history.
The st Lawrence. 🏴✌️
What kind of rotten top is that😃,why he get his wife kissing that man so 😃,I like how he put the man wife in her place.
Ummm---Ft Ticonderoga is in northern NY state, on Lake Champlain near the Vermont border---NOT A WESTERN, FOOL HISTORY MATTERS! Educate yourself, do not be terrified of thinking!!!!! Calvin is actually Clifton Park NY in southern Saratoga County.. I lived there for 13 years, resided in the county for 18 years, and lived in both Warren and Washinton Counties for nearly 30 years and have been to Ticonderoga many times, as well as Ft William Henry, been through Ft Edward and Ft Ann, on a regular basis, lived in Lake George for 2 1/2 years, presently living 7 miles north of Lake George, and a history buff, so I know whereof I speak.
En castellano hablado 😡😈🇨🇱
These old westerns are so predictable.
Westerns were "HOT" in the 40s / 50s / 60s . They churned them out . Action and romance ruled the day . Big name actors were thrilling to watch . With a lot of plot twists , the younger generation might have gotten lost . How many of us go to see a movie today where we know the main actor is gonna "win the day" ?
I know.... the introduction is always in the begging 🥺
And then the story follows.
Only to have the
( you guessed it )....
the end is almost always placed at the point just before it’s over.
So predictable.

nothing more evil than a spurned woman
A "western"??? Fort Ticonderoga is on the New York shore (east side) of Lake Champlain; Vermont (or the New Hampshire Grants as it was known until 1777) is on the eastern shore. There's nothing about the action, the time period, or the geography that would make this botch of a "film" a western! Humbug!
