  • I am going fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast-at low tide. See the fantastic fossil finds i make like ammonites. I am going to be sieving for fossils. First of all i am heading along a new local path made to the West Of Lyme Regis. Join us for some beautiful scenery and stunning little fossil finds.Remember the cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning. Keep away from the dangerous cliffs, the best fossils are washed out onto the beaches at low tide, by the sea's actions. Look out for the slippery seaweed on the ledges and rocks. I offer fossil walks along the Jurassic Coast on the following website, so feel free to take a look at the website I made, with our online fossil walks ------www.lymeregisfossilwalks.com There is a fossil collecting code of conduct in place along the Jurassic Coast. I recomend sturdy gloves and safety spectacles if you are tapping away at the right little rocks. Its important to know the right rocks before you even start hammering any on the beach at low tide. Certain rocks split like slate and are layered. The sieves are just potting sieves we use, you can buy these online. The fossil i have in my thumbnail is a specimen Mike Harrison found. You can see him at Mikeharrisonfossils on Instagram. You can find them along Monmouth beach that particular species at low tide when your lucky 🍀 .

      Thanks 🙏 very much, I put in a concerted effort in Pinhay Bay looking for sea urchins - for an hour. I half expected to find one myself I was concentrating so hard!

    A wonderful walk with stunning views, a superb sieved brachiopod fossil and even a seal popping up at the end. Thanks for this brill video.

      Thanks very much, we have been very lucky 🍀 here with the beautiful weather. The little iron pyrite ammonites are found numerously. I am very lucky to live here, greetings from the Jurassic Coast! 🙏

    Nice to see the walk above too . I wonder why Lyme gives so many golden ones of that size . Certainly the Yorkshire coast doesn’t gift so many in that style

    • @LymeRegisFossils
      @LymeRegisFossils  Před rokem +1

      That’s very true, Yorkshire fossils are harder work. The little golden Ammonites are great little finds here for everyone- at low tide. They keep on washing out and absolutely everyone has their chances of finding them.

      Thanks 🙏 very much , they brought the rock in on big barges . The lavakite rock armouring at the end of the Cobb is from Norway . There are limestone blocks as well to defend Lyme Regis from the sea 🌊

      @@LymeRegisFossils is there a way down to the beach along that foot path?

    • @LymeRegisFossils
      @LymeRegisFossils  Před rokem

      The permissive path runs right along the edge in places of the sheer cliffs. There is no way down to the beach from it . I totally stick to the path walking along there, it’s a spectacular sight to see the Jurassic Coast from that path. I imagine the cliffs below that path are a 100 foot or more sheer cliff. They say keep dogs on a lead along the path as it’s sheer cliff below that path. Spectacular views and a great path but highly dangerous if you strayed off that path.

    If you put these on a premier I'm totally sure you'd build a great chat atmosphere! Lives are great for the feedback loop. Why is it called the "Permissive Path"... ?

      A permissive path is not a public right of way (ie members of the public have no right to walk on it) but landowners still let people walk there anyway

    Ever happen on the occasional "witch stone" in your hunts? I'd love a couple of those. Not a common find in the desert afraid

      Are those the stones with holes right through the middle ?

    • @frenchfriedrat
      @frenchfriedrat Před rokem +1

      Yes, they are sea worn as I understand it. I just wondered because of that one with multiple holes.

    How do you get here from main Lyme Regis?

    • @LymeRegisFossils
      @LymeRegisFossils  Před rokem

      The beach I fossil hunted on is West of Lyme Regis at low tide it’s called Monmouth Beach . There is an ammonite pavement further along that beach visible at low tide . Beware of the dangerous cliffs that are liable to fall suddenly and without warning ⚠️

      @@LymeRegisFossils Would you recommend Charmouth beach for Fossil hunting?

    • @LymeRegisFossils
      @LymeRegisFossils  Před rokem

      There is the Heritage Centre at Charmouth that’s a good starting point finding out about fossil collecting there . I have a playlist of different fossil hunting localities on my CZcams channel like “ Ammonite Lyme Regis.”

  • @KerriEverlasting
    @KerriEverlasting Před rokem +1

    Its legal to take fossils you find? You can't possibly take every one you find? Is taking them "saving" them or is leaving them "saving" them?

    • @KerriEverlasting
      @KerriEverlasting Před rokem

      You mentioned a code of conduct but you know I'm on the other side of the world. Looking up the code of conduct would probably depress me so much 😂

    • @LymeRegisFossils
      @LymeRegisFossils  Před rokem +2

      There is a fossil collecting code of conduct in operation along the Jurassic Coast. That is available online to see fully what is required of you, if you wish to come fossil collecting. I think leaving the big Ammonites for everyone to see that are eroding away is a really necessary thing. The families who see them can really get a feeling about the prehistoric past from them . The small fossils that would be destroyed by the sea, really need saving from the beach at low tide. In the Winter months big storms destroy the fossils rapidly.
