At this point, the US is just paddin’ its kill stats...
Even if 99% of these cases are legitimate, it’d shift the problem from “the police are murdering people” to “the government doesn’t even *try* to reduce the crime levels”!
And in general, it makes the US police force seem like a trigger-happy (or barbaric in the case of melee) squad and the UK police force like a considerate team.

Love your visualizations. There's a German dude who does data analysis and also produces some great graphs showing the data that he gathered and he makes really great and fun conclusions from this data which also proves to be surprisingly accurate. His name is David Kriesel. I think you two could have awesome conversations.
So I'd love if you could dig into the reasons why there was that difference in the quality/completenes of data points that you got. Is this a coincidence or where there different laws? Why did id revert back after a year? Stuff like this always amazes me.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this.
Kind regards,

@@lll2676 They (Obama admin) passed new laws on gathering the data and making it publicly available.
Kriesel is great
I don’t know german 😭 his presentations look interesting at least, even if I can’t understand
The reason for differences between years is not different laws or anything like that, it's just incomplete data.
There's no central government source compiling this data in the US, so abacaba used Wikipedia lists that are more complete for some years than for others. Since it's made by volunteers, it's only as good as people could be bothered to make it. The US list is split into separate articles by year and sometimes by month, so if someone just starts filling in missing information in a given part of the list it will be limited to a certain point in time
The Washington Post police shootings database has many more documented deaths than Wikipedia, and also has a fairly consistent number of shootings from year to year. However it's limited to shootings exclusively, and it only goes back to 2015.
The biggest reason for this discrepancy is that most Americans have guns. In the EU, you're surprised when you see a gun. Even on a police officer.
In Italy police officiers have guns, but the people killed by police have been beated, not shooted.
I must say that we have very few cases, in ten years you can count them with one hand.
You will be surprised! There are plenty of gangs that carry guns in the UK. If the police are supposed to kill anyone, it would be those guys they would be killing because they have guns.... but guess what.... they don't.
Guns, okay... Loaded guns are something else...
A lot of police offers carry guns in the EU but they barely use them. I think one problem in the USA is that almost everyone could potentially carry a gun and thus could potentially be seen as a danger for the officer. It's not the only problem though.
GUNS SUCK
The UK is like stars on the sky and the US is a gray rectangle.
America. I’m not lovin’ it.
My initial reaction to this was “but maybe their violent crime rate is lower?” so I looked it up:
When comparing murders, the UK actually has around 1/4 of what the US has per capita, which may seem like a big difference, but compared to the fact that this shows we have over 100 times more police killings per capita there is still a staggering difference between how our two police forces use life ending force.
Look up the assault on officer rates between the 2 countries. America has way more.

It is nothing more but a virtue signaling nonsense, and without understanding and taking into consideration all the variables and the deeper context that governs the society and people's lives in general. @Abacaba should be ashamed of himself for selective reporting of these statistics and giving the fuel for this nonsensical propaganda. Also, he forgot to mention that in UK, access by the general public to firearms is subject to some of the strictest control measures in the world.
Why does it seem each month has different densities of whether we know the victim's age?
Maybe it depends whether the media covered police brutality extensively or not during those periods?
This is reall confusing. What looks like bursts of additional killings may simply be additional coverage. One coludn't tell if those bursts correspond to a minor decrease in the grey mass of unknown age cases
Often data comes in chunks so when someone adds it so Wikipedia they will probably only do a month or a year
Sandv has the right of it.
This'll be because of media coverage and the waxing and waning of how much people are paying attention

Thank you Cary for exposing this information to us.
I think comparing the Police killings in the US and UK might be a bit too much of a extreme example to compare as everyday UK police are almost never armed. And it's hard to kill people without being armed.
On the other hand. In the case of Germany, France, Japan or Korea. these countries have an fairly armed police, yet still their police killing rates are much lower. If I were you, I would use that as a comparison. Instead of the case of the UK as police killings being low in countries where the police is unarmed can look obvious to some.
EDIT: Also I kind of want to add that saying that police killings as a statistic should be compared proportionate to total Arrests or Crime Rates. Not the population.
Statistics man, they're so fun to watch, so fun to disassemble.
I think you’re missing the point
@@xaph5575 I don't think they are missing the point. Statistics can be easily manipulated and therefore should be criticised if they show it incorrectly or misguide a viewer

Looks extreme on just how trigger happy the police force of the USA is when it comes down to it.
I think its partly to do with the people in the states are allowed to carry firearms. its not easy to find the root cause of the issues. i do hope the issues are found and resolved.
It doesn't really matter. If most of those victims were innocent, then it's obviously a bad thing. If most of them were dangerous criminals, then you have too many dangerous criminals, which is also not good. Both situations indicate that something is seriously wrong in the US, compared to Europe. I blame this on the fact that you are largely on your own in the US, while there are many safety nets in most European countries. If you get in any trouble, there is plenty of help from the government available to try to get you back on your feet. This greatly reduces the need for criminal activity.

I'm from Scotland (currently part of the UK) and people here are still protesting because Black Lives Matter. We, with a tiny fraction of deaths by police, still think people suspected of crime or even those who later are proven guilty of crime need our help more than a death sentence. We do not have by any means, a perfect system but we will protest again and again until it is better. Even then, we will be looking to make improvements and take away the reason for us to be included in a video at all. I was quickly pretty numb to the bottom 4/5ths of the video but I winced every time a cross appeared on the top. That was a gut wrenching video.

Thank you so much
The problem is gun culture in US. This is the source of all of this. I know that banning all guns isn't the right solution (it would just increase gun mafias like prohibition with alcohol). This is the problem for years and years of fixing.
The reason for this discrepancy is quite simple. In Britain, police generally aren't allowed to carry guns. If they were, it's quite likely the ratio of US to UK deaths would be much less.
How did you come to this conclusion?
Wrong conclusion. In many other countries, the police also carry guns, without the same result. In fact, many policemen reach the end of their career without having to fire their gun once. For example, the total number of people killed by German police, in the whole of 2019, was 17. This does not mean the German police never make mistakes: "A witness called the police, because he saw a man on the local cemetery, armed with a rifle. Police officers felt threatened by the man and shot him three times in the chest. He died later in hospital. Investigations revealed that the man was a hunter, ordered to control the rabbit population. The hunter's wife, who was also present at the scene, claimed her husband lay down his rifle immediately when the officers arrived and the shots were fired while the hunter was kneeling on the ground.". see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_killings_by_law_enforcement_officers_in_Germany
The information is right here, yet some people will still say there's nothing wrong with the system. They will say that if people didn't break the law, no one would get killed. That gun ownership is painted in a bad light just because of 'a few irresponsible owners'. That owning lethal weapons makes them feel 'safe'.
Just think about it for a moment: If one day the government gave everyone a means to end someone else's life instantly, would you feel safe? No. Would you feel safe if they instead gave a lethal weapon only to 'good people'?
It sounds a little counter-intuitive, but as a government it's better to assume most if not all people will act badly. Sucks for the ones who won't, but the consequences of letting 'just a few bad apples' have that kind of power are unimaginable.
another outstanding visualization!

it's worth noting that both of those articles say they are incomplete at the top
@abacaba could you do a rerun but without the ages but evenly distributing the cases, it's now a bit messy and harder to compare
it would be good to add how many police officers died in line of duty during that period for better comparison
Because guns is everywhere in the us... Hence, most confrotation is deadly because it involves weapon..
So criminals have more guns?
fede edelstein Everyone has more guns which is a bad idea, better if no one had guns whatsoever like the UK
@@fede1324ee Guns escalate any violent situation, just due to the fact that a criminal MAY have one. This undoubtedly leads to way more police killings.
If gun is the reason, you can compare other countries with guns vs no guns. There are more police killings in Nicaragua (much of Americas really other than US) that has much fewer guns to US, and US has far fewer killings. It's more complicated than just guns.
Chevy SparkEV Do we really want to relate the US to a third world country where police often are armed with semi automatic weapons and have no regulation? And if we are then that shows how low we have gone.

Almost certainly because of all those "unknown age" individuals. I expect an average age based on the known ones is substituted.
I feel like the ending should've been cut or at least have kept the somber music

So some of the developed countries are even more dangerous than some of the developing countries? Dang
@Soble And dangerous for innocent people too.
DEFINITELY something for actual investigative journalists to use as a background when reporting...
Someone should go tell the CEO of the cops

Wesley Kronmiller what a unresponsive coward.

2:29 Why does Mark Duggan not have a news and photo mark? His death caused national riots.
This was kinda heartbreaking to watch. The US police have literally killed twice as many people as there's in my town, in just 11 years.
Good detail with the video length
Last time I was this early, cary only had one channel.

Litterally nobody cares, this is a serious video so respect it that way.
Wow, this is really heartbreaking. 💔 🙏
Would be interested to see a comparison with a few other countries.
can you make a video about the comparison of the number of polices that were killed throughout the same years?
and also the races of the murderers
That's so sad!

It’s crazy watching the comparison despite the fact we all know how crazy it is over there. I’m more shocked by how much ours increased after 2015 but even then it’s nothing compared to a few days over there
Holy shit, can somebody just tell me, what kind of threat can a 7 yr old girl have? Why kill kids? That's horrible
As a Brit, I'm disappointed that our protesters generally hold the same level of resentment and aggression towards our police as the US police.
26 killings is still 26 too many, and this comparison should reflect badly on US police rather than reflect well on UK police, who also must improve. However, (AS FAR AS I'M AWARE) there have been no incidents of UK police brutality when dealing with recent protests - unlike the sickening and horrendous scenes we have seen across the US, who's police seem all too happy to abuse/assault peaceful protesters, including elderly people and children.
This is why I was disappointed to see people LAUGHING at the UK policewoman, who was knocked off her horse and suffered a collapsed lung and broken collarbone. I appreciate that it was a tiny minority of people who escalated things and ruined the protest, and I wholeheartedly support the demonstrations and the 99% of people who kept it peaceful. BUT, 49 UK police officers have been injured so far, with bottles, bicycles and fireworks being thrown at them and their horses. This isn't acceptable at all, when GENERALLY our police perform their jobs well (when compared to US police). To reiterate, I COMPLETELY support this movement (and I'm glad Colston's statue has been torn down), just find hurting UK police too far.
Black lives matter.
Remember, this video lists ALL police killings and does not filter out those with or without justification. So a crazed person running around stabbing or shooting people and police have to take them down would count on this video.
I really like how the cowlickers are exporting their lack of mental health to all the Earth, a fine cancer, one would say. They 'export democracy' since the moment they killed or pushed away all the natives. They wage wars in all parts of the world. They demolish unarmed civilians (2 a-bombs, thousands of Vietnam, Laos, Kambodia, Afgan, Irak, Serbia, Lybia, Sirya, Yemen villages being just determinated). Yet it is common in this territory the killers to be thanked for. And now, which sane person gives a fart about their imbecile mental issues? The biggest american economy, Argentina, is buried by them, just like that. They just invaded Haiti islands, coz someone have to retere somewhere, eh? Things that were solved 50+ years in the civlized world are still their everyday problem. Just evaporate from this planet!
@@testsubject5990 Very true, having just looked at the list it includes perpetrators of terrorist attacks, thanks for pointing that out
I am _so_ sorry.
Sorry for underestimating the scale of this issue
Sorry for lumping this topic with other U.S. issues involving guns and unnecessary human death.
Sorry for disregarding the topic because it is outside of my country or sphere of influence.
Sorry for the U.S. system. Something is clearly broken.
Sorry for every single cross and every single cross' family and friends.
Actually, scratch that, I'm *appalled* that a developed country can come to this!
There are some interesting patterns here. I noticed that certain time periods like 2010 have significantly higher amounts of police killings. Can anyone explain why this might be?
I made a $100 donation to make up for all the work you put into this. Great job!
I wonder how the numbers in 🇨🇦 would compare to the UK 🇬🇧 ?? 🤔

It’s funny how most people are assuming that most of the people killed were completely innocent. Even though he stated that it’s not the case.
It doesn't matter, in a democracy no should be sentenced to death (especially without a trial).
Yes. It’s the police being judge, jury, executioner.
@ What about cops? Do they get a fair trial?
If most of these victims were indeed dangerous criminals, than this statistic shows that you have way too many dangerous criminals, compared to other countries. This still makes it a big problem that you can't just ignore. Americans live in a country with either significantly more dangerous cops, or significantly more dangerous criminals, or both.
@@janickpauwels3792 Oh yea, you know that holywood have nothing, absolutely nothing with it, yes? This place is not in usa, is not praising kills and is not praising cops and is not praising mafiots. Absolutely no, never, they swear! As this is not country anymore, there is no need to use caps for it's abbreviation.
I don't believe all cops in the US are bad and I don't think it's fair to base your hatred for an individual on the fact that he or she is a cop or make general sweeping statements like 'i hate cops'. Just like I don't think it's right to base my opinion on a whole race of people because of the way some of them may be. Not to compare an occupation to a human race, but to compare the logic behind the thought process. Yes when I see something happen like with George Floyd, I'm disgusted, saddened and hurt as a human being...I believe most all decent people feel these emotions to one degree or another, of course there are moments I think 'fucking pussy cop' or 'fuck the police'. But I don't let those emotions dictate or guide my principals and rational thinking when trying to understand the details and facts of a situation.
I'm not going to sit here and say there isn't a problem, clearly there is. Admittedly I am extremely shocked by the visualization of the data in this video and realize how much bigger a problem it is than I had thought.
I don't know the answers but I know replacing one hate for another will just keep everyone fighting and arguing. I don't think any one perspective has the answers either, the problems are deeply rooted in racial, political, and class issues, corruption, greed, hatred. I'm afraid very little will be addressed or changed unless the right and left can stop drifting so far away from each other and learn to convey their ideas and concerns in a productive way, rather than memes (as funny as some are) and treating each other like trash for a differing viewpoint.
Unfortunately the data also shows the left drifting more left and the Right staying about the same or drifting to the center. Seems like one side needs to drift back to the center for things to work out. One group is leaving larger society behind for perceived wrongs and at this point if you don't completely agree with every narrative they pull out of the data then you are racist. This is the real problem and why the country is divided. BLM is a race baiting organization. It's sad to see people fighting for something that could benefit everyone but then only seeing it from their side while simultaneously calling all of society at fault. Usually if every encounter you have is an issue, you start looking in the mirror. Not these people, when there is an issue they always blame "the other side". There are no sides, all lives matter, but not to them. They have to divide and that's why I think they are going to get the division they want, but not the way they think they will. It's very unfortunate.
@@dsap4004 I respect and understand your position, however I was more speaking to how each side treats each other. Both are at an all time worst from everything I've experienced and know. I don't care so much about the politics and policies behind it all (to a point) when it comes to the topic of communication between opposing ideas. As for your statements and opinions on BLM, I may agree with certain points you made regarding tactics used by the organization as a whole. But simply only looking at the negative aspects that you disagree with and making blanketing statements that don't align with the values and reasons others may follow the movement for is not going to open any ears on the other side. Regardless, I do see tons of people getting together for a cause, to try to stop something they perceive as broken in our society, something needing fixed. There really shouldn't be any argument from either side about the fact we ALL don't ever want to see something like what happened to George Floyd happen again, we all want less violence, less killing and less hate.
What I see on a daily basis is people at each others throats, more interested insulting and putting each other down. If things continue down this path, nothing will ever be resolved and society will be divided further and further apart. We're all being played by the politicians and ones in power, who want us divided and are the real enemy.
I think the visualisation would have been better without the age bars but with random placing crosses. The no age bar is distorting the view and takes less visual space and thus makes it look less grave
this is truely depressing

There are so many problems in the US with guns...
Those who don't like it need to move on out. Plenty of other countries. Only one country protects free speech.
Except police here are trying to bar free speech? Trying to end peaceful protests violently with tear gas and rubber bullets is free speech to you? The mentality of “if you don’t like it then go” is a bandaid over the problem, not a solution to the problem. Also don’t bring the freedom excuse, the Freedom House ranked us in 2019 to be less free than Greece by their aggregate scores, ranking us as the third least free first world country, only better than South Korea and the People’s Republic of China.
This is sad and the fact that people dont see an issue with this makes it even worse
