I'm about to cry when I watch this video, I live in Vietnam and about to go to the US to study, I feel so happy that's everyday I still have chance to have nice time with the Buddhism without any defence from the other and have good chance to study it. I also want to cry cuz even you're having hard time, your love with Buddhism is still go on, not any knowledges is more important than your love and practice to the Buddhism. Don't worry, you're doing better than even some people live in my country, even if Buddhism is part of their tradition and they have good chance and Buddhist knowledge, your love and practice to the Buddhism mean more. Namo Buddha. Nam Mô Đại Bi Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát, xin Người phù hộ cho chàng trai trẻ này!

This is a great video. I’m new to Buddhism but my mom had always been interested in the culture and moral ethics of Buddhism. She even went as far as to give me many statues of shakyamuni that she had collected in Asia. I now have a nice collection and have been looking to build a nice peaceful altar. Your video has been amazing and by the way I love the Guan Yin statue, I don’t see many people with statues of the Sangharama bodhisattva.

Just to add, I want to first say, as a Chinese born Canadian from a traditional Chinese religious household, I really value and respect your decision to follow this path, and i think it's awesome!. And in regards to who's shrine is simpler to who's, it shouldn't matter. We all have our own ways of practicing the teachings of the Buddha with our devotion. And every way practiced is unique and special and shouldn't be criticized. That's just how i feel.

My deepest gratitude for your beautiful instruction on setting up a shrine. I am just beginning intentional Mahayana study and practice. I really appreciate your humility in that you share that it is not needed to have expensive items. I have a small makeshift shrine in a separate room, but your teaching will guide me in improving it and making it more proper. May you always dwell in happiness. Namaste.

you can make a travel alter too if you always travel a lot you can make it
    materials:
1.a small Buddha statue any type Thai Tibetan Chinese you can get it online or dharma shop
    2. you will need a medium box metal or wood
3.you will need tons of incense sticks if you don't have a pack of incense sticks buy a pack at a Buddhist store go check if they have it once you have the incense sticks you take a few out maybe like 30 or 40 if it can fit you will need to cut it like 3cm or how many cm you like if your box is medium maybe you don't need to cut so on to the candles part you will need skinny candles it must be yellow or red you can get the short ones in Thailand or online or you can cut it yourself
4.water cups you can get one in online or Buddhist shops but not to big a small one now offerings you can put it in your back pack offering must be only one fruit coz your shrine is small 5. if you have a small incense holder bring it with you if you don't have one bring a play dough make a round ball of it and bring a candle holder too
6.bring a cloth red or white or yellow
and you are done put every thing in the box and your ready once you reach destination you put all the things you have in your box place the shrine on a rock or on the box if you want to be placed on the box put the cloth on the box because it may damage the box

Why I found in the internet, the Buddha is the tallest one in shrine (on the platform)the Buddha's and bodhisattvas are not on equal level, the other site says the tallest statue is at the back,in your altar, Guan you is at the back, Shakyamuni Buddha is at the front, the japanese style is a shelf-like style with doors and many levels (not to be confused with the Shinto altar which is kamidana or your shelf),each levels has a hole where you can place sutras or mantras inside, the flowers are arranged, there are 7 or more bowls, some shrines contain different foods in the bowl, tea, mochi, most common is water,etc...,the vajrayana practice however has a large container to put the water from the 7-8 bowls and use them for watering plants and many other more, your altar have a little vajrayana practice in it, Tibetan Buddhists often put a thanka(painting of buddhas, bodhisattvas, dharma protecting deities and so on and so forth)at the back of the altar, again with platform, but Tibetan Buddhism or Vajrayana Buddhism has a little different structure of the altar they often have a stupa(pagoda in Chinese)which contains relics or Sarira of gurus or Buddha himself, they place the pagoda or stupa at the left of the statue/s (please don't be confused with the actual pagoda, not the Chinese building or some stuff ok but the dome shaped or bell shaped structure, small ones are placed in the altar, big ones are buildings already) they also place a Dharma book at the right side of the statue/s...

I would like to know Setsabbati's learning origin of his/her teaching of the Buddha? I would also, lie to remind him/her of the basic teaching of compassion. If you find something that maybe wrong in this young man's presentation, be a teacher. Do not ridicule, or degrade. That is not the Mahayana way. I would like to ad that the Mahayana tradition is practiced in many different countries of origin, including, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Japan. Each add cultural variances to the tradition and alter settings. There is nothing wrong with this young man's alter and I applaud his resourcefulness!

I think, in all of Mahayana altar or Chinese altar, all statue's face must facing forward, nor back or side.
Especially in Indonesia, the chinese altar in house, we have to choose the most neatly room in house. Most of altars in Indonesia, we build one special room to make an altar.
For the table, we usually use glass to avoid the burn of the table, and also we used the red clothe, because red in chinese is like a happiness, not white, white in chinese is sorrow when there is one of our family is death.
