Aphelios is a range, melee, tanky dps, assassin, mage, tank support, jungler.
He exceeds at everything
Aphelios is an adc so getting close to him will surely result in a vict- *gets pummel by red gun*
So Aphelios is a similar adc like Vayne where she out damages you close range but is weak if you have better rang- *gets shot down with a sniper rifle*
The proper way to position against Aphelios is remaining mid range so that h- *gets pummeled by every single gun*
Actually the proper way to take down Aphelios is to group up with your team and force a team fight because he doesn't have a good team fig- *kills 3 people with R, the rest with his shotgun*
So the proper way to position against Aphelios is when you see him in champ select you position your cursor to the X button

As a supp player the only things I learned about this champ are: 1) ult bad 2) sword bad 3) if snipe shot, cc cause he stands still..... And I think I know more than most Aphelios players themselves sometimes the way they play.
But let's be honest here, the only difference between a bad and a good Aphelios is the belief they have of winning a fight....

Actually if you look at the winrate of champions that are well known as having a high skill ceiling, in low elo they have low winrates, but in high elo they have higher win rates, aphelios is in that category
